Higurashi at the first watch is incredibly creepy and intriguing. But on the second watch it's incredibly sad, because you've really started to care about the characters and you understand what's going on and why. On the first watch I was totally freaked out after the first arc, but on the second I almost cried.

out of all the characters in higurashi, the only one that isnt really crazy imo is mion. keiichi is insane from the beginning, renas always been crazy, rika kills herself, satoko has random panic attacks and shion kills practically all of the town.

None of them is actually crazy. They're just affected by the Hinamizawa Syndrome. Anyone, including Mion, could have gone nuts. Well, Rika stabbing herself was kind of extreme, but she did that because the world she was in was already beyond repair and she didn't want to get tortured to death by Shion.

@l337M3X1C4N Alright. To start off the first half of season one is dedicated to telling the story in the form of a mystery where the first murders and insanity and mistrust come into play. They are told from the perspective of Keiichi. After the first few arcs the stories are then retold from the perspective of a different character and the mystery of each arch is solved through the retelling of the story. This continues until the last arc where a new mystery is presented and then solved.

@animetwilight75 If you want to get down to it, it's never said that shion ever aquired the curse and she did all of the things out of revenge. In the first story arc Mion had been under the curse debatably saying she has less free will meaning she is more insane then shion. So those who said shion was more crazy were possibly wrong to an extent since I'm merely bringing up what I see.

The first to die like the village leader and her grandmother were seen as responsible for Satoshi's death. She also blamed mion and planned to kill her later. Satoko and rika died because they practically walked right up to shion and were killed.  Shion also blamed them. She was also going to kill Keiichi --

Shion is the creepiest. She killed nearly all the characters aside from Rena. She conspires against everyone throughout the series. She almost went insane in the second arc of Kai. The one where everyone tries to save Satoko. She also carries a tazer around with her throughout the series; even in Rei; and it was at the pool. No one brings a tazer to the pool EVER.

@XxPaperThinxX Well Shion would be the most insane. People who leave the area of Rika's control are more susceptable to the virus. The only infected killers in the series were Shion, Keichii & Rena. The more amount of time absent from Hinamizawa increases the severity of the disease. Shion was absent for most of her life. All it would take after that is minor mental trauma.

Bit question such as what was really happening in the arcs i will leave to you :P .

I really like the thing with the twins and the butterfly. It's almost like it symbolizes them. One half of the butterfly is fine (Mion), whereas the other one is shattered (Shion). One half broke away from the other. I'm not sure if this was intended or not, but if it was, well done Higurashi. :)
