  • Ein bewegender Film - Gänsehaut und ein sensationeller Richard Dreyfuss

  • i love everything about this movie... anthony natalie is cute and a grat actor.. a real plus

  • Okay, whats with the annoying back beat and usage of electric guitars ? That just kind of took away from the whole thing for me.

  • @macree01 If you've seen the whole movie, you'd know that earlier in the movie, a kid named Lou Russ joined the marching band, and he wanted to play electric guitar for it. Then we found out later that he died in the war. I guess they had the guitar in there as a tribute to him.

  • I watch this film like 5-6 yrs ago when i was in early 20s.. it was a great film..... and now i am 32yo! i still love this... NICE!!

  • Greatest scene in the film

  • Mr Holland's Opus was wonderful. I had a "Mr.Holland" in my school. His name was Mr Djuren. He made band and music what it was suppose to be--a damn good time.

  • 当時日本では「陽のあたる教室」と言う名前で文部省推薦の映画でした。

    私はこの映画が大好きで今でも借りてきては見ています^^

  • God, I love this scene.

  • thumbs up for English speakers watching this video anyway because thesong isBA

  • it wud have been really funny if they all just sucked

  • To lausaurum...I believe the meter of the piece is 12/8 time which justifies Dreyfus using a 4 pattern in his conducting. He also uses some 2 patterns in his interpretation to convey this to the musicians. The fast speed of the 8th notes makes this necessary.

  • @mocatom it's actually originally scored to be conducted 2/2 with massive subdivisions especially in the electric bass part, but they kind of screw it up in this movie and have him conduct in 4 (Still the same subdivisions though). The song played is actually a part of a larger piece altogether, still called the american symphony, but by Michael Kamen (obviously it wasn't composed by a man named Glenn Holland). Oh, and this recording is a half step (ish) higher than in the movie.

  • To lauxaurum...I believe the actual meter of the time is 12/8 which justifies Dreyfus conducting in patterns of 4. If you look closely, he also does direct some patterns in 2. The fast speed of the 8th notes justifies this directing pattern which also is conveying his interpretation to the musicians.

  • i agree with most of this. except the, they would all have to sight read. they knew he was retiring for a few weeks. they had time to rehearse. and i do agree with the symphony being 3 to 4 movements argument but its a movie and it needs to be short and dramatic for the non music people. i love that your such a music geek though lol.

  • Richard Dreyfus is a fantastic actor! What talent! I love the scene where the horn player spits the gum on the floor to the girl next to him, just like he did earlier in the movie!

  • p.s. he's emptying his spit valve. not spitting gum lol.

  • Omg! is that was he was doing? He bad! Right next to the same poor girl too! Thanks for clarifying, I really did think it was gum he was spitting out! Only me!

  • We are playing it in orchestra ight now and it is in four fourths time

  • wtf, why is it in chinese???

  • @lostalex77 Actually, German.

The poster of the song only had the German version.

  • I remember playing this in orchestra when I was in high school. Probably one of the best pieces we ever played.

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE

  • loved this movie!

  • I don't want to rain on anybody's party; this was a good movie & a good song. But really, sounding like this would be completely implausible. Most of these people would still be high school level players, and for them to all of a sudden come together with the intricate rhythms that are played here, and that they could sound like this? Speaking as a musician myself, I just don't buy that. But as with most movies, you buy the premise, you buy the bit.

  • Then you've never been to the Tri-State Band Festival in Enid Oklahoma. Those kids are/were high school kids, and by the time they give their final concert, and have an amazing sound.

  • is that really what is important here?

  • I wish I had teachers like this when I was in High School...all our teachers were in class just for the paycheck and nothing more. :(

  • I wsh our school had an orchestra, but we are too small.

  • The words are in german, but it is still in american sign language, so if you know that, you can understand it.

  • And this would be the first time he's heard it being performed.

    I love this movie.

  • To me, the most moving part remains 3:30 as the tone of the song changes, and they show his wife and son, best friend, and antagonizing principle all effected by the music. Truly a wonderful film.

  • top 10 movie of all time.

  • the last chord is simply amazing.

    Great movie.

  • Richard Dreyfuss was brilliant & the film is one of my favourites ...It also points out how a good teacher is valued by his/her students for years after their school days. Very moving

  • I feel so bad for his freaking son. The poor guy can't hear what his dad worked on for 30 years.

  • I think he's knows how it sounds. He could using the vibrations coming from them orchestra to hear it. Like Mozart, or Bach, i dnt remember which.

  • It was Beethoven who was deaf, good sir.

  • thts right, srry about tht. I havent done music theory in a while so im a little rusty with it.

  • @WatchHawk

That is ignorant and stupid thing to say! That is so UNTRUE, you are obliviously NOT deaf person and NO IDEA about deaf people, period! I am deaf and I fully appreciate music and fully understand the music. Each of us learn about music in our own way. I may not hear the music but I feel many different waves and vibrates from music itself. Same thing with other deaf people.

  • @Chaoic16 - you're right. I no idea about deaf people. I don't understand why you're attacking me. I apologize for my ignorance, but I was just showing pity for his son, because he can't actually HEAR the music. If you still understand and it appreciate it, then marvelous. My bad.

  • @WatchHawk

I apologize for attacking you like that. I am so tired and sick (same thing applies to other deaf people) of people saying that they 'wish' that we 'COULD' hear the music is like saying that we will never be able to appreciate music. That is very untrue, deaf people, including me truly understand and appreciate the music in our own ways. At once when you lost one of your sense, you develop sixth sense and you use that to make up for sense that you lost.

  • @WatchHawk

And also, deaf people doesn't appreciate people having a pity on them. I am one of them, because when we lost one sense, we always find way around our limits and we have NO limits of doing anything we wish to do! That's why when someone said something so pitiful, it is discrimination against us. We always go through many of discrimination in our lives, because these people don't understand anything about deaf people and their lives.

  • @Chaoic16 You are the IGNORANT one. WatchHawk did not say that his son could not APPRECIATE the music, he said HEAR the music, and last I heard that's the definition of DEAF. No, I'm not deaf either, but I know the definition. I also know that deaf does not always mean completely deaf. It was mean and rude of you to go off on someone when he was being sincere. It was a compliment to the father and compassion for the son. You should try it!

  • @airraider2004

Firs at all, that is where you are completely wrong, when you said "I also know that deaf does not always mean completely deaf", and that is called 'hard of hearing". You see? There is big difference between deaf and 'hard of hearing", deaf is when you completely can't hear any sound at all. When You are not completely deaf, then you are officially hard of hearing. And I am quite offended that you said I am ignorant one. I 'll tell you something,

  • @airraider2004

You have not even been deaf before right? Then you have NO idea what it is like when people usually assume that just because you are deaf, it mean you can never appreciate the music like hearing people do. You obviously don't even know about the difference between deaf and 'hard of hearing' as you have shown in your posts. This movie, in fact, is one of my favorite movie with the struggling relationship between his father and son. I truly understand the precious part of

  • @airraider2004

this movie. And when someone, like WatchHawk said this "I feel so bad for his freaking son. The poor guy can't hear what his dad worked on for 30 years.", is exactly what people do.. and that is 'assume' that his son would never appreciate music that his father worked hard for 30 years. This is exactly why I must stand up and tell him that it is ignorant thing to say, period. My older brother write his own many songs and I am able to fully appreciate his music, just like

  • @airraider2004

Cole appreciate his father's music in this movie.

  • @airraider2004

And oh one more thing, deaf people also can listen to music in their own way by feeling the vibrates and other ways. There is always ways that deaf people come up to actually understand the music and how much someone pour into the music.

  • now I know ....

we're gonna need a bigger auditorium.

  • Um, is this in english? (the video I know the movie is)

  • the drumset part seems easy and i wanna learn the guitar part to this

  • The movie was average in the beginning , but as it approached the end , it left tears in my eyes :)

  • seriously, i started watching this for fun and now im like sobbing!

  • your such an idiot

  • The one thing that has always bothered me about this scene: Did the band practice this beforehand, or are they sightreading? If they're sightreading, they sound damn good.

  • That lady in the crowd, (who mr. Holland hugs and kisses on the cheek) with the curly hair and spectacles was Ms. Rowena Morgan herself!! She is ofcourse, much older here and it was she who knew that Mr. Holland was writing his Opus! And it was she who wanted to give back something to Mr. Holland for his sincerity and guidance. Obviously, she realized by then, that he did the right thing in not following her to NY.

  • this movie is awesome :D it was yesterday on MGM :D 5 stars

  • Great! I can't watch this without getting teary-eyed. Thank you!

  • What I love best about this scene is how you can see the look on the principal of the school's face is how he is thinking, "Why the hell did I fire him?"

  • Comment removed

  • one of the best songs ever written.

  • the best of Richard Greyfus

  • its like ridein a bike

  • what I dont get, is how many of those alumni on the stage still remember how to play their instruments? I suppose Governor Gertrude Lang still practices her clarinet after more than 30 years?

  • they may be people, that practice from time to time to not lose their skill of that instrument. There are people in my family that can play instruments but never in groups. just on their own

  • ok, and another question: Gertrude Lang, the redhead, became governor of the state right? She shoes up to this ceremony and plays her clarinet. Now wait a sec, if she is Governor, why the hell didnt she stop Mr. Holland and his music program from losing funding?

She shoes up to the celebreation to commemorate Mr. Holland, but clearly could have stopped such an event from taking place by helping HOlland keep his job. WTF.

  • I'm guessing because politics doesn't bow to just one person. If it were that easy, all schools would keep their music funding today.

  • @gmichali because in all reality it isnt up to the governer but up to the school board

  • @gmichali Because, to my knowledge, in the US a State Governor would have little or no control over the financial workings of a small school--public or private. The decision to cancel the arts classes was vested in the school board, not any local or state legislature, so unless she can pass legislation specifically preventing it, there's not much she can do about it.

  • @gmichali It wasn't just that school that lost its funding. It was several in that state. So, she couldn't show any bias for that particular program. showing up was good enough.

  • @gmichali I don't think that's true. She could slapped with misappropriation of funds. Just because governor doesn't mean she snaps her fingers and send tax money to a particular school for a particular thing.

  • @gmichali Maybe she already tried that?

  • they pratice six weeks before, and the kids help them adlib and Govenor Lang teaches her kid to play the clarinet

so she still has the touch

  • this song brings a tear to my eye

  • i want this song played at my funeral. it is so amazing.

  • *grins* You can't enjoy it at your funeral. Just play it a lot now.

  • awesome song and spot in movie

  • very nice

  • great movie and great song :)

  • thanks on the opus thing....lol...mabey one day ill have an opus, or a song.......i already have a theme stuck in my head, and a name but it lacks something and has lost something, and i dont know how to get it back lol computer broke its screen and all what to do????? call a computer store?

  • best symphony, but what is an opus, does anyone know????? and whats the beatles reference????

  • an opus means a great work; I think it's Latin.

  • I love this film. Fuck everyone else. I'm a twenty year old white male, and I cried in this scene; if you've the whole movie... It's just great how all of his 'band students', can still preform and most of them are grown up; and have established careers for themselves.

  • @RoufasthaSage Can you love it without writing fuck? Then please do so. Otherwise, demonstrate you are merely an uncouth fool by disagreeing.

  • @tommerrigan1956 It's been two years but sure. I love this film.

  • @RoufasthaSage yeah and it brings me tears too.Glad i wasn t the only guy....

  • You gotta love that Beatles reference at the end - definitely the best part.

  • wheres the beatles reference near the end, just becouse i never really listened to them thats all.....lol

  • The very last chord in this is very similar to the very last chord at the end of the Beatles song "A Day in the Life."

  • ha YES i always notice that my frfiends always call me crazy

    =p

  • word

  • Loved the piece...Good movie...Hate the fact that they have this clip in Japanese or whatever...English damn it lol It's all good. Teasing. Now go make me some dim sum Takashi.

  • Dim sum is Chinese.

  • It's german. Quite different, dude. Most countries in Europe translate movies: that's what makes this continent such a good market for american stuff. If our european movies were dubbed, you would realise how good many are. Reading to understand often does not help if you just want entertainment :)

  • On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give this piece about a 7.

  • Just out of curiosity, what would you give a 10 to?

  • The full score is amazing, find it!!! Than again I like anything that Michael Kamen wrote.

  • love this song

  • I honestly can not believe that someone could be such a mean-spirited person. I do NOT care about what you wrote. I bet that you have not seen this truly fantastic movie. It is not weak at all, and even if you can write better music, post it as a reply to this video, do not just write that you are awesome and this music is "shit." Please do not ever comment on a video ever again. No one cares about you or your supposed accomplishments. Just shut up.

  • Then try saying the symphony was weak, and leave it at that. An opinion is fine. Being completely degrading for no reason isn't. I hope you're more pleasant in person.

  • Boy did you miss the point. . .did you even WATCH the movie? It's not about making the greatest symphonic piece, it's the fact that he finally made one. . .period.

  • Boy did you miss the point. . .did you even WATCH the movie? It's not about making the greatest symphonic piece, it's the fact that he finally made one. . .period.

And yes...posted twice, sorry...I'm YT stupid.

  • My grade school music teacher went to the school where this movie was filmed.

  • it's not English :'(... how stupid i am, i just wanna listen to the music lol, i loved it by the way

  • This is truly a wonderful piece. Although this version, which I assume is in German, sounds a littler higher pitched than the American version. Even though, it's still a GREAT piece and I thank you for posting it!!!!!!!! I could listen to all day everyday and not get tired of it. However, if your have seen the movie you should really watch the movie. It's not just about music!

  • A truly great film. Thank you for post

    ing. Thank you.

  • This is one of my all time favorite movies and one of the few that actually make me cry at the end. Such a great way to bring a wonderful story to a close.

  • I love this song we just got the music sheet in band cuz we r gonna play it for our concert and i really liked it!! yay for the bass clarinets!! we rock!! BASS CLARINET FOR EVER!! AWESOME frech horn sound and the sound overall

  • Beast mode.

  • This is going to sound totally nit-picky, but I think the symphony in this vid is a half step higher than the original.....I can't be sure, but I've heard it SOOOOOOO much....this sounds high. Great piece, anyway

  • Since it's the German version, I'm assuming the source material was in PAL. PAL movies/videos play slightly faster (4% to be exact) than NTSC videos. Faster play=higher sound frequency. It's usually imperceptible, as we're just talking a few extra frames per second, and you can't really tell if a person's voice is slightly higher, but if it's a piece of music and you have an excellent sense of pitch, you can usually tell. Good ear! Google "PAL 4% speedup" (no quotes) for more info.

  • this is such a great movie. the song is so beautiful, i have the sheet music and its fun to play! :)

  • chinculancha. lo unico qe entendi.

  • I have loved this piece since I knew it existed, but I had never seen the movie which it came from. When I saw this, there was dripping something wet, salty and clear out of my eyes...! ;)

  • Man, this movie was AMAZING i just got done watching it. this was my favorite scene too.

  • If you know anything about deaf people then you know that they can still feel vibrations. Also with that un-tolerant attitude then your a discrase to your mom. Dont be a hater

  • German

  • me encanta esta pelicula!!!!

  • what language is she speaking??

  • Sie sprecht Deutsch. lol German

  • sie spricht* deutsch :)

  • i always cry at the end of the movie because mr. holland worked so hard on the symphony, but his son will never be able to hear it.

  • He can feel the vibrations watch the fxxxx movie

  • It's in German.

  • please let us know if is in english or not

  • i laughed when mr. holland got hit by the truck

  • what truck?

  • what truck there was no truck in the ending. This is the ending

  • this is in fact the final movement from the Symphony and was deemed best for the film but if you can get the score of the film on cd you can hear the full symphony in all its glory!

  • foul language and self-centered agrandizement kinda thing. put in some rhythm and booty-shaking and you got rap. still, it's trash to me.

  • I already bought at least four of my friends this movie. I watched it a hundred times.... and counting. The movie reminds me that the success in life cannot be measured by what we have, but rather what others become because of what we do.

  • Michael Kamen composed such awesome work. Requiem en pax.

  • I agree...but if they had performed the full version it would be more almost believeable that Mr. Holland had been writing it for 30 years.

  • wow nice song!

did this movie come with a message?

  • Definitely!!!

If you are interested in the movie send me a message, I will send you more details -

but my recommendation is: Just buy it and watch it. It´s worth every second you´re watching. And AFTER watching, at the end, it will make you cry... ;-)

  • Basicly the message is about makeing choices. (sorry for my miss spelling by the way)

  • ahhhh the late great Michael Kamen

  • this is the greatest peice of music i have ever experienced in my life, every time I hear it makes me feel like I can do much better in my life. It inspires me to be a better father, husband and overall person. Thank you Mr. Holland's Opus!

  • tears in mi eyes like :-)

  • Stayed with me since I saw this the first time. Inspiring :-)

  • frigin awesome song and movie

  • it gives me goosebumps everytime..

  • After all these years, this still makes me cry. . . Love it.

  • Simply great...

  • Every time I watch this scene it makes me cry.... During the time the movie came out our own school was cutting music and art out, and art was to be my major in college.

  • AMAZING. I always loved this song & this movie.
