Grew up in San Francisco, Bay Area and this is when all the cool Artist like Sanborn, young & very good Concerts at that time, 25 years ago. I still listen to all these older videos to see watch & listen to the musicians. Good Stuff.
This was recorded back in the late 80s as a VHS video. It was recorded in a studio with a live studio audience. At one point, I had it in my collection. I'll have to do some searching it also featured a vocalist that did Love and Happiness!
Damn that's right!!!! Hiram bullock and don grolnick, the 2 greats gone. Rip don and Hiram. Damn that miller bass is too funky! My fave tune!! Good post of a good song in action!
The jam at the beginning is really good but the combination of the funky bass and smooth drum rhythm at the actual start of "Run for Cover" is fantastic!
Miller and Sanborn are class but it looks like the Cameraman knows nothing about music, where the hell is Hiram? No focus on him which is a shame, what a player!! RIP Brother.
@davenight Yeah! That cameraman must have been the same guy filming The Allman Bros. at Fillmore. Duane Allman is burning up the strings with his glass slide, and the camera guy is focusing on a cymbal!
@MotownHouse Yeah I've seen everything but Smile from this B&W video series. I have it somewhere on VHS from back in the day. Hopefully someone will post it!
If you still have it....could you please upload "Smile" from this same set (or send me a link if possible)...I've been looking for it for years. Used to own this video... the version of Smile on it is indescribably good. These guys tear it UP! Thanks for sharing!

Hi...I've been trying to get the rest of the David Sanborn set from 1986 with Hiram and Marcus (it's in B&W) I think it's the Straight From the Heart video. I used to own the videotape, but lost it in a move. I saw in another post that you might have it...One tune in particular where David, Marcus and Hiram are "dueling" is the holy grail of jazz for me...I think it's "Smile"...but I could be wrong.
@tarmriu i've always wondered that exact same thing. I dont know if you've ever seen a horrible movie called "blankman"...but it looks like blankmans reaction to bein kissed by a girl.
For those looking for this in high quality it was released on laser disc in Japan.
If you can find one and have a player it could be uploaded and the sound would be good. Or someone could sync the audio form the CD "straight to the heart" to this video. You're right it should be released on DVD my old VHS from the telly has no top end and is well grainy.
I take nothing away from david sanborn but people really didnt take notice to his music until he joined forces with Marcus Miller and it was miller's bass playing, producing and composing which is the primary reason for david sanborns commercial success and his mutilple grammys
David sanborn is a fantastic musican and I take nothing away from him but alot of people dont realize that Marcus miller's bass playing ,composing and producing played a huge role in sanborns succesful career, including every grammy he ever won

seen these cats LIVE back in the day and they jammed every time. Always left their shows feeling good! in 1982 i walked into a record shop and they had the "Backstreets" album playing. That was my intro to David Sanborn.
David Sanborn is the BEST EVER to play the saxophone!!!!! He is a HUGE inspiration to the style that I play today because of pieces like this! I LOVE David Sanborn (music that is)!!!!!!
Putain de merde, ce morceau est une anthologie du jazz rock à lui tout seul... Sanborn, Grolnick, Bullock, Miller et Williams sur la même scène. Y'a des gens qui ont vu ça, la vie est trop injuste :)

I saw this band live in 1981-82 and I can testify, greatest jazz funk group ever in the history of music.
People stood the entire show, nobody in their seats, ever! Screaming like maniacs, this band was so solid.
Sanborn puts more air through the horn than anybody I ever saw play before or since.
Hiram is a guitar god, Marcus is a genius.

The video / laser disc is called "love and happiness" by the way if you're looking for it.
Originally a TV promo for the "straight to the heart" album/ cd
let's nag warner bros/ Sony to release it on DVD, it's the best of this type from the 80s by far.
