  • Grew up in San Francisco, Bay Area and this is when all the cool Artist like Sanborn, young & very good Concerts at that time, 25 years ago. I still listen to all these older videos to see watch & listen to the musicians. Good Stuff.

  • This entire VHS tape makes me happy! Thank you for helping me remember it!

RIP Hiram and Don You are missed but never forgotten!

  • This was recorded back in the late 80s as a VHS video. It was recorded in a studio with a live studio audience. At one point, I had it in my collection. I'll have to do some searching it also featured a vocalist that did Love and Happiness!

  • Amazing perf ! Could anybody tell me where/When this live was recorded ?

I'd Like to get this live

    Thanks

  • Marcus Miller, yesss!! I have this on the Hideaway album! Great live album.

  • @AbiolaAbasi Voyeur album (studio) Straight to the heart (live) SUPERBASS!

  • One of the seven wonders! :-)

  • favolosi... marcus su tutti...

    so long

  • This has been released on DVD as David Sanborn & Friends parts 1 and 2.

    Only in Japan.

  • Where's Hamish???

  • Damn that's right!!!! Hiram bullock and don grolnick, the 2 greats gone. Rip don and Hiram. Damn that miller bass is too funky! My fave tune!! Good post of a good song in action!

  • try amazon its still available on VHS TAPE !

  • Guitar player @ 3:13 - Cocaine is a Hell of a drug!

  • @artleitzke he is fantastic :)

  • @artleitzke LOL that's Hiram Bullock. Amazing unique guitar player, died a few years ago sadly. But yeah he was like that everywhere..sober lol

  • I saw this band live in 1981-82 and I can testify, greatest jazz funk group ever in the history of music.

People stood the entire show, nobody in their seats, ever! Screaming like maniacs, this band was so solid.

Sanborn puts more air through the horn than anybody I ever saw play before or since.

Hiram is a guitar god, Marcus is a genius.

  • That begining groove is already to much! I love this song

  • Budson, layin' it down so nice....

  • Marcus never plays this solo the same way everytime I've heard it 3:09 in

  • espectacular bass don!!!!!

  • I've got this on dvd..You can find it on amazon. But yes, if there is available a blu-ray version, trust in my words: buy it!

  • Sanborn @ 2.07 Shit we really are THAT GOOD!!! DAMN!!

  • My favorite Sanborn video.Watched this a million times.

Heard this on the radio at the time and drove directly to the record store!

David and the band just kill on this..

RIP Hiram Bullock and Don Grolnick you guys are sorely missed.

Would pay lots for a dvd of this video.

  • The jam at the beginning is really good but the combination of the funky bass and smooth drum rhythm at the actual start of "Run for Cover" is fantastic!

  • Miller and Sanborn are class but it looks like the Cameraman knows nothing about music, where the hell is Hiram? No focus on him which is a shame, what a player!! RIP Brother.

  • @davenight Yeah! That cameraman must have been the same guy filming The Allman Bros. at Fillmore. Duane Allman is burning up the strings with his glass slide, and the camera guy is focusing on a cymbal!

  • o shit

    slim hiram

  • do you now how i can get the complete video? thanks for upload this videos, there're awsome.

  • If anyone has "Smile" from this set...PLEEEASE post it or send me a link...been searching 4 it for years!

  • @MotownHouse Ok, just give me a few days

  • @Horthy66 Were you able to upload Smile? :D

  • @MotownHouse Yeah I've seen everything but Smile from this B&W video series. I have it somewhere on VHS from back in the day. Hopefully someone will post it!

  • If you still have it....could you please upload "Smile" from this same set (or send me a link if possible)...I've been looking for it for years. Used to own this video... the version of Smile on it is indescribably good. These guys tear it UP! Thanks for sharing!

  • Hi...I've been trying to get the rest of the David Sanborn set from 1986 with Hiram and Marcus (it's in B&W) I think it's the Straight From the Heart video. I used to own the videotape, but lost it in a move. I saw in another post that you might have it...One tune in particular where David, Marcus and Hiram are "dueling" is the holy grail of jazz for me...I think it's "Smile"...but I could be wrong.

  • He slaps that bass like a mouthy woman. Bring me a sammich!

  • anybody knows which concert has been taken from? thanks everybody

  • wow Marcus hanging his bass low. lol

  • What e hell is Hiram doing at 3:15 ? Is that his versin of moonwalk?

  • @tarmriu i've always wondered that exact same thing. I dont know if you've ever seen a horrible movie called "blankman"...but it looks like blankmans reaction to bein kissed by a girl.

  • The video / laser disc is called "love and happiness" by the way if you're looking for it.

Originally a TV promo for the "straight to the heart" album/ cd

let's nag warner bros/ Sony to release it on DVD, it's the best of this type from the 80s by far.

    Slammin'!

  • For those looking for this in high quality it was released on laser disc in Japan.

If you can find one and have a player it could be uploaded and the sound would be good. Or someone could sync the audio form the CD "straight to the heart" to this video. You're right it should be released on DVD my old VHS from the telly has no top end and is well grainy.

80s jazz funk is the bomb.

  • Love the Sanborn!

    facebook

    jeffreyoneeighty

  • these 3 made one of the best bands of ALL TIME

  • LD(死語)、DVDも持ってます。

    久しぶりに聴いたら やっぱマーカス カッコイイ!

  • I take nothing away from david sanborn but people really didnt take notice to his music until he joined forces with Marcus Miller and it was miller's bass playing, producing and composing which is the primary reason for david sanborns commercial success and his mutilple grammys

  • i got straight to the heart on cd i love it marcus miller superb! don grolnick on keys buddy williams on drums.on the song love and happiness vocals are performed by hamish stuart from the average white band,a talented scot who has worked with george benson and chaka khan plus paul mcartney !is this guitarist hiram bullock?i thought hiram was a white guy!!

  • ammazza che pivellino qui marcus.::P..:D..:)

  • Absolute the BEST version of "Run For Cover" no doubt about that...

  • can anyone tell me where this dvd is? I would like to buy it today! like now lol.

  • legends in this vid

  • i love this funk "run for cover" and the black and white video...

  • a wonderful ambient for this run for cover !!!

  • Beautiful video, to make it b/w was a great choice, it would lose most of it's charm in color.

  • ♥

  • this is my favorite Marcus Miller song

  • Miller + Sanborn !

  • seen these cats LIVE back in the day and they jammed every time. Always left their shows feeling good! in 1982 i walked into a record shop and they had the "Backstreets" album playing. That was my intro to David Sanborn.

  • Very nice, really solid playing all around

  • so good!

  • Go marcus!!!

  • The best version ever

  • The sound quality of this clip is commendable! What an ending!!

  • R.I.P. Hiram. One of the best that never got his due.

  • grEAT POST!!! Thanks a lot

  • La classe.

  • saw him when he was in paris.!!!! GO SANBORN!

  • I had this when it was on cassette

  • Man, thanks for posting it!!! Best version of Run For Cover ever!!! These guys are inspired!!! Really top musicians in a very good day!!!

  • my sax hero,i love everything he does with his music, everything he does just makes me want to keep playing the saxophone

  • It is.

  • Is this the Hamish Stuart from Average White Band?

  • Sanborn+miller=Magic!!

  • awesome clip. My favourite Sanborn track. Muso heaven...

  • David Sanborn is the BEST EVER to play the saxophone!!!!! He is a HUGE inspiration to the style that I play today because of pieces like this! I LOVE David Sanborn (music that is)!!!!!!

  • Love for Hiram and Don, yes. Incredible musicians.

  • Putain de merde, ce morceau est une anthologie du jazz rock à lui tout seul... Sanborn, Grolnick, Bullock, Miller et Williams sur la même scène. Y'a des gens qui ont vu ça, la vie est trop injuste :)

  • Sanborn....Legend....

  • wow!!! jammin!!

  • This is a masterpiece of funk, jazz and great musicians. Hiram was very under-rated as a true guitar master. Sanborn is fantastic.

  • @junkie4vids

But you heard HB with Steps Ahead...right?

  • Why has this never been released on dvd or even better Blu-ray. Record companies complaining about not making money, No wonder with the people running them. They probbably don't even know they have this in their vault.

  • I bought it on VHS 20 years agon at North Sea Jazzfestival in the Netherlands!

  • I have a laserdisc version of this concert. I've come to realize it's probably the best version I'll ever have as I don't see this ending up on DVD or Blu-Ray.

  • @Derfunkmeister f you can find one and have a player it could be uploaded and the sound would be good. Or someone could sync the audio form the CD "straight to the heart" to this video. You're right it should be released on DVD my old VHS from the telly has no top end and is well grainy.

80s jazz funk is the bomb.

  • @Derfunkmeister I agree 100% !

  • Does anyone have the video "Smile" from the same concert?

  • has been deleted. I upload tomorrow

  • @EtanPete62 Got the whole gig on vhs.

  • @funkeebassman where? i'll buy it vhs right now lol

  • @DexChick90 I recorded it off tv in the 80s.

  • @funkeebassman wooo! lol ok long time ago but thanks anyway

  • @DexChick90 I'll sell you a copy for $100...woooo lol

  • @funkeebassman i'll take it! lol

  • It is great to see but sad for theose we have lost- Hiram and Don...

    :-(

  • If Sanborn weren't so damn good, I would make fun of the way he dances.

  • Would like to download this video. It is so great!!!!!!!!!!

  • This I always heard my brother playing earlier. The open sax (solo) always sounds so super positive! Like the sky opening or something..

  • sky opening :))) David sanborn is amazing!!He plays this song like no other,he is most sensible!

  • i shed my tears looking at hiram in this video. only god can bring him back.

  • This video is absolutely priceless. David Sanborn and Marcus Miller together. It's like a one stop shop for auditory delight.

  • it's from "Straight to the heart"?

  • it's from voyeur

  • My first jazz album ever. My friend bought this for me for my birthday. There were very little vocals on this album. A first for me. I loved it. Thanks James McGlothlin!

  • please someone tell me chords of this song. i want to play(i know melody because ihave a book .but not written chords!)
