Actually, Coulter is wrong once again. Obama never played the Daily Kos kids for fools. He made it very clear during his campaign that he wanted to increase the size of the military, send more troops to Afghanistan, and maybe also bomb Pakistan and Iran while he's at it. If anything, the Daily Kos kids played THEMSELVES for fools, since they were the ones who perpetuated the myth that Obama was some sort of anti-war progressive.
err, Guantanamo *is* getting shut down. They just need a year to sort out what prisoners go where. Keep in mind that a lot of countries don't want these people, while others (like China), would be only too happy to take them a tear them apart. Pakistan and Afghanistan go pretty much hand in hand in terms of security, and he's been saying he'd scale up Afghan operations ever since he started running.

We're shutting down extraordinary rendition too. I don't doubt that there are things Obama will do that I won't like, but I'm fairly confident torture is finally gone.
Obama says the truth. He won't allow american people to torture - that's a disgusting practise. Rather he will ask colombian, nigerian or turkish tortureres to do it, that calms a little bit the bad conscience.
You sure it's 100% out? It seems inconsistent with what some other stuff:
"Anthony D Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU said of the decision: 'Eric Holders Justice Department stood up in court today and said that it would continue the Bush policy of invoking state secrets to hide the reprehensible history of torture, rendition and the most grievous human rights violations committed by the American government.'"
Um nothing, that is the point. We can't fight terrorist if there are no terrorist. We must motivate them to fight back and terrorize us. Then we can continue the war on terror, pissing more people off so they become terrorists...an endless cycle.
Al-Qaeda is shooting at us from over the Pakistan border, and since their government isn't doing jack, we are. The thing to remember, whether you agree or disagree with us bombing there, is Pakistan has nukes. Whatever we do, we don't want that government collapsing. As far as civilian deaths go, "surgical" and "bomb" don't belong in the same sentence. I'll believe in that when I see a tumor removed with c4. It's just a shitty situation all around.
Why did the Pakistanis shoot at U.S. forces? The primary reasons of many situations in the Middle East are never discussed. Pardon me, but isn't the Pakistani gov trying to work out a peace agreement with Al-Qaeda? Also, don't drone attacks violate the international rules of war, specially if civilians are killed? The U.S. (the world's strongest military) can't fight Al-Qaeda without killing civilians? Who cares anyway, they are only Indians right?
When you ask "why did the Pakistanis shoot at US forces", do you mean their military or Al-Qaeda? Al-Qaeda: because they hate us. The military: because we're shooting up their country (an understandable reaction on their part). I have no illusions about us being some kind of white knight, but neither do I think we're the Evil Empire. Pakistan is negotiating, but every time they think they have a deal, shooting starts again. Letting Al-Qaeda have a safe base in Pakistan isn't an option.
You sound like an intelligent guy. If you do your research you will see that the U.S. is clealy the biggest sponsor of terrorism in history. We've been responsible for everything from the Palestinian holocaust to the Contra wars in Nicaragua to violations of international laws and even for the violation of other state's sovereignty. Anyone w/ common sense knows that shooting at the U.S. military is a act of suicide so I think it's fair to assume that Al-Qaeda had better reasons to shoot at us.
I'm in total agreement when you say we're our own worst enemy in creating the terrorists that end up shooting at us later. The that has defined this failed method of foreign policy is unwillingness to follow through and get people food, education, and jobs. Al-Qaeda is a group of dangerous loonies, and the best we can do now is try to keep from making any more of them. Stable countries don't generate these kinds of people, so we fix Afghanistan, we take away much of their support.
Yes, the primary reasons for conflict are overlooked. Any fool knows that the only victory short of genocide is diplomatic. We need to do a lot more in the way of lifting people out of poverty, and a lot less in terms of killing everyone they hold dear -- that's how you make suicide bombers. We are the best military at taking down other military's, but guerrilla warfare is always messier. Targeting civilians is a war crime, killing them is regrettable. FYI never call a Pakistani an Indian.
"Yes, the primary reasons for conflict are overlooked. "
What's your point. Are you actually admitting that the U.S. gov is a terrorist?
No, I'm saying that shooting people isn't all you have to do. You need to build school, get an economy going, all that good stuff. Generally make it so people have a life worth living. One thing that is necessary for that is security, but guns alone don't solve the problem.
The fuck I wouldn't have the right to complain! I do, so does anyone. Personally, I like what Obama has done so far, and I won't knock him for Pakistan. It's a terrible can of worms. We could try equipping Pakistan to clean their own house, we could stand back and bomb, but the one option that is absurd on its face is doing nothing. As long as we're in Afghanistan, we must have a secure Pakistani border, and it seems we're in Afghanistan for the long haul. We broke it, we bought it.
Do I really have to convince you that the US is better than Osama? Osama targets civilians in the name of an oppressive ideology, we generally try to limit casualties and expand liberties. You don't need to think either America is the pinnacle of righteousness or the unholy realm of Satan. We're a flawed nation, not evil, and buying into one or another dichotomous camp isn't going to save any lives. If you want change, you'll need pragmatism.
If Osama would have jets and power, he wouldn't need to attack directly civilians. He would have a good PR-campaign, persuading people "he wants to spread a peaceful religion and stop western barbarism". Then he wouldnt need to kill civilians, he can then threaten countries with invasion, investment cuts, starvation, isolation. Thats a much effective way of terrorizing, because this kills more civilians than you can think. Guess who apllies such terroristic means.
So you're one of those people who is still convinced that the U.S. invaded the Middle East to spread democracy? The U.S. funded and trained Osama, so I won't chose between the lesser of two evils (hmmm, sound like my experince voting) . And then the U.S. wonders hy noone likes us.
I know we didn't go there to spread democracy. I think the very idea of invading nations because we know what's best for them is preposterous. Thing is, we're there now, and things would get a heckuva lot worse if we just left. As one example, there are people building schools for girls. We know exactly what would become of them. I know we trained Osama, and the reason people like him have sway now is because we were too cheap to build schools, only ship weapons. Let's not do it again.
I'll definitely knock obama for Pakistan because civilians have died. He used absolutely no strategy. Rather, he used brute force. As far as the Pakistani gov, they are cleaning their own house. Why the hell are we in Afghan. in the 1st place. When you start illegal wars, problems (like neighboring countries shooting at you) begin to develope. What the f***? So Afghan. now belongs to us because WE attacked THEM?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You can't wage this kind of war without unintended casualties. No, Pakistan does *not* have control over its Afghan border. My "you break it, you buy it" analogy means this: you break the country, you buy the problem of fixing it. A good historical example of this is Germany. After WWI, the Treaty of Versailles stripped them of basically everything, even dignity, setting the stage for a pissed off comeback in WWII. After that we rebuilt Germany and now it's a peaceful and prosperous nation.
Two things IB1. First you're swaying in and out with your argument. You said invading a nation like we know what's best was stupid, but then your solutions are all composed of western concepts which you decided was best. Who decides what life is worth living? Second, Germany was a western country with a similar moral value system as the U.S., what worked for them might not work in this situation. Especially if all the work is done by our contractors.
So he's not really shutting down Gitmo? Shame on me for actually believing that bullshit. Well since that's the case, I officially hope Al-Qaeda wins and the Taliban take over Afghanistan. Fuck this country, and fuck that lying asshole Obama.
You know, as cynical as I am Obama and I said months before the elections that he would have blood on his hands as soon as he got in, I do feel a little betrayed by his actions. Yes, I know it's a lie, the presidency, his entire campaign, fake democracy. It doesn't help the continuing feeling of embarrassment, shame, guilt and rage that I feel because of this continuous lie. It doesn't make it any less real by mocking the situation either, as the mainstream Left in this country do with Colbert.
due to the fact that no one could truly tell me what "Hope and Change" really meant, or what policies they agreed with. Obama's candidacy was truly a rape of the democratic system through fear and victimization.
Something every politician has done (and is doing).
How is that change?
For once in my life, I'm ashamed of my country, for being THIS ignorant. For not dragging the waters to reach the depths of truth, it's sickening, depressing, and sobering.
Considering Obama is from a third world country he has to be one of the most contridicting presidents of our time, bush doesnt count because he doesnt know what a contridiction is. But Obama isnt an idiot and hes doing the same stupid shit bush did, shouldnt be surprised, and im not, just disgusted.
His whole political future would be up for grabs if he actually got too uppity with the entrenched elites and their corporate proxies -- the ones who actually set the agenda for him, AC. He can't step out of line too much, and he knows it.
He knew it from day one, and he chose to play that game.
in the short run, it's a great pity a genuinely democratic mass such as the one behind obama was misdirected and defused from exploding, politically so to speak.
in the long run, it still marks a generational shift forward.
(D)-support was far more progressive than the current administration, which is charged with the institutional obligations of statehood, warfare etc. no matter the rhetoric and symbolism.
it isn't as if obama were a anti-war, 100-mile diet, pot head from Seattle.
ha! no of course not, not in the sense of liberation, emancipation all that jazz.
i think that it was a popular movement which sided with a figure of an undemocratic system, that expressed it's grievances and desire for democracy however inarticulate those aspirations were, or how well placed they were.
i see it as as the manifestation of the people's building frustrations that perhaps shows radical potential in the future. and given the times, maybe in a year or two, become real.

As for this video, I'm not sure I consider it honest... but I admit I don't know much about the issue.

Well of course. Following the President under the current US system is not voluntary.

IdleBystander1 2 years ago
Even if Gitmo is shut don, it means nothing because the U.S. has many more prisons like Gitmo around the world.

We're shutting down extraordinary rendition too. I don't doubt that there are things Obama will do that I won't like, but I'm fairly confident torture is finally gone.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
Torture gone? Not likely.
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago
Obama says the truth. He won't allow american people to torture - that's a disgusting practise. Rather he will ask colombian, nigerian or turkish tortureres to do it, that calms a little bit the bad conscience.

Like I said, extraordinary rendition is out. We stopped. That was Bush, this is now.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
You sure it's 100% out? It seems inconsistent with what some other stuff:
"Anthony D Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU said of the decision: 'Eric Holders Justice Department stood up in court today and said that it would continue the Bush policy of invoking state secrets to hide the reprehensible history of torture, rendition and the most grievous human rights violations committed by the American government.'"

I'm lost: what did Pakistan do that the U.S. felt the need to attack them with drones? And aren't most of the victims civilians?
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago 3
yes they are, but they're not Americans or Israelis so it's okay for Americans to kill them. Were the 400+ babies killed in Gaza terrorists?
vintage217 2 years ago
Um nothing, that is the point. We can't fight terrorist if there are no terrorist. We must motivate them to fight back and terrorize us. Then we can continue the war on terror, pissing more people off so they become terrorists...an endless cycle.
I hope this helps.
ZullGostnu 2 years ago 2
hahahaha! I see your point, but if we terrorize them first wouldn't they be exempt from the label of terrorism by default of self-defense?
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago
Al-Qaeda is shooting at us from over the Pakistan border, and since their government isn't doing jack, we are. The thing to remember, whether you agree or disagree with us bombing there, is Pakistan has nukes. Whatever we do, we don't want that government collapsing. As far as civilian deaths go, "surgical" and "bomb" don't belong in the same sentence. I'll believe in that when I see a tumor removed with c4. It's just a shitty situation all around.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
Why did the Pakistanis shoot at U.S. forces? The primary reasons of many situations in the Middle East are never discussed. Pardon me, but isn't the Pakistani gov trying to work out a peace agreement with Al-Qaeda? Also, don't drone attacks violate the international rules of war, specially if civilians are killed? The U.S. (the world's strongest military) can't fight Al-Qaeda without killing civilians? Who cares anyway, they are only Indians right?
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago
When you ask "why did the Pakistanis shoot at US forces", do you mean their military or Al-Qaeda? Al-Qaeda: because they hate us. The military: because we're shooting up their country (an understandable reaction on their part). I have no illusions about us being some kind of white knight, but neither do I think we're the Evil Empire. Pakistan is negotiating, but every time they think they have a deal, shooting starts again. Letting Al-Qaeda have a safe base in Pakistan isn't an option.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
You sound like an intelligent guy. If you do your research you will see that the U.S. is clealy the biggest sponsor of terrorism in history. We've been responsible for everything from the Palestinian holocaust to the Contra wars in Nicaragua to violations of international laws and even for the violation of other state's sovereignty. Anyone w/ common sense knows that shooting at the U.S. military is a act of suicide so I think it's fair to assume that Al-Qaeda had better reasons to shoot at us.
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago
I'm in total agreement when you say we're our own worst enemy in creating the terrorists that end up shooting at us later. The that has defined this failed method of foreign policy is unwillingness to follow through and get people food, education, and jobs. Al-Qaeda is a group of dangerous loonies, and the best we can do now is try to keep from making any more of them. Stable countries don't generate these kinds of people, so we fix Afghanistan, we take away much of their support.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
Yes, the primary reasons for conflict are overlooked. Any fool knows that the only victory short of genocide is diplomatic. We need to do a lot more in the way of lifting people out of poverty, and a lot less in terms of killing everyone they hold dear -- that's how you make suicide bombers. We are the best military at taking down other military's, but guerrilla warfare is always messier. Targeting civilians is a war crime, killing them is regrettable. FYI never call a Pakistani an Indian.

What's your point. Are you actually admitting that the U.S. gov is a terrorist?
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago
No, I'm saying that shooting people isn't all you have to do. You need to build school, get an economy going, all that good stuff. Generally make it so people have a life worth living. One thing that is necessary for that is security, but guns alone don't solve the problem.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
well, the biggest terrorists are in the US, so if some country bombed the US and killed your family, you wouldn't have the right to complain
mr1001nights 2 years ago
The fuck I wouldn't have the right to complain! I do, so does anyone. Personally, I like what Obama has done so far, and I won't knock him for Pakistan. It's a terrible can of worms. We could try equipping Pakistan to clean their own house, we could stand back and bomb, but the one option that is absurd on its face is doing nothing. As long as we're in Afghanistan, we must have a secure Pakistani border, and it seems we're in Afghanistan for the long haul. We broke it, we bought it.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
Osama could say the same thing after killing your whole family
mr1001nights 2 years ago
Do I really have to convince you that the US is better than Osama? Osama targets civilians in the name of an oppressive ideology, we generally try to limit casualties and expand liberties. You don't need to think either America is the pinnacle of righteousness or the unholy realm of Satan. We're a flawed nation, not evil, and buying into one or another dichotomous camp isn't going to save any lives. If you want change, you'll need pragmatism.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
If Osama would have jets and power, he wouldn't need to attack directly civilians. He would have a good PR-campaign, persuading people "he wants to spread a peaceful religion and stop western barbarism". Then he wouldnt need to kill civilians, he can then threaten countries with invasion, investment cuts, starvation, isolation. Thats a much effective way of terrorizing, because this kills more civilians than you can think. Guess who apllies such terroristic means.
Staubdumm 2 years ago 3
Let me guess, the U.S. of A.?
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago
So you're one of those people who is still convinced that the U.S. invaded the Middle East to spread democracy? The U.S. funded and trained Osama, so I won't chose between the lesser of two evils (hmmm, sound like my experince voting) . And then the U.S. wonders hy noone likes us.
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago 3
I know we didn't go there to spread democracy. I think the very idea of invading nations because we know what's best for them is preposterous. Thing is, we're there now, and things would get a heckuva lot worse if we just left. As one example, there are people building schools for girls. We know exactly what would become of them. I know we trained Osama, and the reason people like him have sway now is because we were too cheap to build schools, only ship weapons. Let's not do it again.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
I'll definitely knock obama for Pakistan because civilians have died. He used absolutely no strategy. Rather, he used brute force. As far as the Pakistani gov, they are cleaning their own house. Why the hell are we in Afghan. in the 1st place. When you start illegal wars, problems (like neighboring countries shooting at you) begin to develope. What the f***? So Afghan. now belongs to us because WE attacked THEM?
CallUmHowISeeUm 2 years ago 3

You can't wage this kind of war without unintended casualties. No, Pakistan does *not* have control over its Afghan border. My "you break it, you buy it" analogy means this: you break the country, you buy the problem of fixing it. A good historical example of this is Germany. After WWI, the Treaty of Versailles stripped them of basically everything, even dignity, setting the stage for a pissed off comeback in WWII. After that we rebuilt Germany and now it's a peaceful and prosperous nation.
IdleBystander1 2 years ago
Two things IB1. First you're swaying in and out with your argument. You said invading a nation like we know what's best was stupid, but then your solutions are all composed of western concepts which you decided was best. Who decides what life is worth living? Second, Germany was a western country with a similar moral value system as the U.S., what worked for them might not work in this situation. Especially if all the work is done by our contractors.

I've never ever liked Obama
due to the fact that no one could truly tell me what "Hope and Change" really meant, or what policies they agreed with. Obama's candidacy was truly a rape of the democratic system through fear and victimization.
Something every politician has done (and is doing).
How is that change?
For once in my life, I'm ashamed of my country, for being THIS ignorant. For not dragging the waters to reach the depths of truth, it's sickening, depressing, and sobering.

in the short run, it's a great pity a genuinely democratic mass such as the one behind obama was misdirected and defused from exploding, politically so to speak.
in the long run, it still marks a generational shift forward.
(D)-support was far more progressive than the current administration, which is charged with the institutional obligations of statehood, warfare etc. no matter the rhetoric and symbolism.
it isn't as if obama were a anti-war, 100-mile diet, pot head from Seattle.

The Obama obedient drones didnn't seem like a "a genuinely democratic mass"
mr1001nights 2 years ago
ha! no of course not, not in the sense of liberation, emancipation all that jazz.
i think that it was a popular movement which sided with a figure of an undemocratic system, that expressed it's grievances and desire for democracy however inarticulate those aspirations were, or how well placed they were.
i see it as as the manifestation of the people's building frustrations that perhaps shows radical potential in the future. and given the times, maybe in a year or two, become real.
