I'd love too hook up my gutters to a collection system but there is just so much dirt and leaves in my gutter system because of the trees near my house, we clean them out regularly but no matter how hard we try it seems like there will always be a thick filter of rotting leaves at the drain points
Nice simple system. We plan on setting up a similar system soon. Currently we water the garden with the water from the air conditioner, lol. Not really for a WROL situation, but it is free water, and much better then just letting it run into the ground.
Hey man , what the heck do you use to keep the misquito larva out , i tryed this and before the barell got full it fill up with nasty misquito eggs and bugs.
@climbingtothetop Locally but I cant find anymore, I bought 2 of them and now wished I bought more. I bought them orginally to store things in not water but they work great for water barrels.
@climbingtothetop Carwash places or other automotive places sometimes carry them. I recently picked one up for free from a carwash place. They carry soap in them
@climbingtothetop I worked at a car dealership these barrels had windshield washer in them. On any given day there would be 6-10 of them waiting to be cut up and thrown in a dumpster. They more than likely will be at the back of the building, maybe near the old tires. You should ask the service desk about getting some. I imagine they will gladly let you have them to save room in the dumpster.
A buddy of mine uses those square 300 gallon tanks the farmers use for spraying chemicals. I suppose they would be safe to use as long as you got them new.
I have the plan to save rain water. Would not have helped me much this year anyway it hasnt rained in forever. This would be great for me this fall. Thanks for the video.
One question.... what do you do with it in the winter? Your setup would likely freeze and crack up here in the cold midwest. Do you worry about freezes down South where you are located? I would think that a year round system would need to be located inside.
Great system. It should be noted that more and more cities are starting rain barrel programs that provide free or low cost rain barrels. The city I live in provides professionally made barrels complete with installation kits for a very low price ($45?). Your video has prompted me to investigate the program myself.

Great Video! If water sits a while and gets stag net or scummy can you just boil it and then run it through a filter when you are ready to drink it?
Great Idea I would have never thought to check with our local Pepsi distributor to get food grade 55 Gallon Barrels. I was trying to find one of those large round back yard pools used or really cheap, I figure you can store allot of water that way and pretty cheap.
About how long will the water last in the drum last before it becomes stagnant, because i really dont have any shrubs or landscaping to water it would mostly be for a back up drinking supply seeing as if my power is out my water pumps is out. benifits of livng on a moutain in the hills of Kentucky.
To filter that water you can use a 5 gal bucket with a 5, 10, 20 30 or 50 micron filter cartridge from the hardware store. The quick and easy method, but not necessarily rugged, is to drill a small hole in the bottom of a bucket, use silicone adhesive and plastic to cover and seal one end of the cartridge, and silicone the open end to the bottom of the bucket. A 5 micron filter can turn muddy water clear, and costs about $10. 5 layers of cotton over the opening of the bucket will help.
@InTheSticks0001 Clarification needed: "A 5 micron filter can turn muddy water clear, and costs about $10. "
The cost of the bucket, filter, and silicone can be had for a cheap as $10. The 5 cotton layers will help remove some of the fine silt, clays and larger debris that would clogged the very fine filter much sooner. Set the filter bucket on top of another bucket with a hole cut in it's lid and the water will drip into the lower bucket.
@InTheSticks0001 One can also use this same technique with a single ceramic Berkey water filter cartridge. Buy two replacement Berkey filter cartridges for about $99. Use the fist filter bucket already discussed to drip into the second bucket with the Berkey filter by drilling a hole in the lid of bucket #2, and use a third bucket on the bottom to catch the bacteria free and potable water. Put a valve in the third bucket and one would have a field expedient water processing plant. Works good
Hey SP, Are you making solar panels? I am starting my panel project with 3 panels, just received 108 grade A 3X6 solar cells. they provide .5 volts rated at 4-5 amps each. You can easily run a few appliances on these. I think I paid like $142. for these cells. It is my intention to go completely grid independent as money allows soon, but I will likely still tie into the grid, so they can pay me for anything over. Just curious on your stand on solar. I saw Engineer775 had solar setup for well.
@rebelprepper No Iam not making them but I do have some panels. I love solar but I have other needs first. I have 2 of the harbour freight systems that is for my ham and cb communication equipment and also to charge small batteries(AA,AAA,D). I have plans for some but I have in front of them a wood cook stove and a hand well pump first.
Your barrel should be painted black, dark enough to block out sun light. That is why your barrel is gettin crappy inside. The UV rays hit the water and grow algea if you block the sun it wont grow.
@Zippy1one Another reason is just dirty rain water off the roof sure does not help. I think I will build a box around it and this should help keep the sun out.
@KentuckySurvivalist A local man sells them for $8-10 they come from pepsi company or a fruit juice company. They dont have the removeable tops but are food grade.
@KentuckySurvivalist - You wrote: "those 55gal drums ... Every time we find one its $80! we just cant afford it..." Hey, this is about water, the most vital part of any survival setup. @KentuckySurvivalist I've had decent luck finding them on craigslist every few months. there was a guy locally to me (in Iowa) selling 55 gal drums that held vanilla, so they're food safe, for $6 a piece.

I suggest using a 1/4 turn ball valve for your hose bib "AKA spigot" because they will last for ever and will not have any leaks. A regular turn hose bib will start to leak over time then you have to mess with changing the washer inside. Also if you live in an area that freezes a ball value will do a lot better than a regular turn valve.
@coozy100 Probably not because when it pours the water really fills the barrel very fast and the filter probably will not handle the amount in a short time. But I like your idea about the filter and I need to make one that I can take water from the barrel and pour into another container that will filter it before I put it in my berkey filter.
@southernprepper1 yeah cuz way back in school they taught us to do that. hah a bit of a kitty project.could be cool if you set it up in pvc.. the top would have a screw type apparatus to force the water out of a lower bottom hole.. like semi portable filtering.
@coozy100 - You asked "could you hook up a carbon/coal filter on the big pipe coming down..." Look at it from a different perspective. If you live in the country or even a small city, you won't need a filter (unless there is a polluting factory upwind). Sure, there will be algae and microbes in the water and the runoff will include a bit of bird poop, but you should train your body to adapt to this. Better than being obsessive about hygiene in a WROL situation and going cold turkey.
Nice work! I'd just put a 4" tube or hose on the side up top so when the barrel is full it would run back out to the flower bed. I'd also paint the top and sides of the barrel so the day light wont cause Algae to grow inside. I always look forward to your videos.
@tamarleigh I scrub it out every 3 or 4 weeks but it could go longer but I just like to keep it clean in case I need it. But its fine for watering the plants if I go longer.
@southernprepper1 - You told us "I scrub it out every 3 or 4 weeks...." Note that some food grade plastic products have a very thin (a few microns) coating that is food grade. @southernprepper1 howd you start that lovely house of yours? As i know this is your stead.
shotgunn9 6 months ago
@southernprepper1 - You told us "I scrub it out every 3 or 4 weeks...." Note that some food grade plastic products have a very thin (a few microns) coating that is food grade. This covers the barrel which itself might not be food grade. Scrubbing would remove the thin coating quickly. The barrels are made for a single use and that's why they are so cheap. There is a risk that toxic plastics (phthalates, BPA, PBDE etc.) could leach into your water. Something to keep in mind with cheap stuff.

I have two rainbarrels that I use for watering my plants and young fruit trees. I've had them for years and I love having that free water source available. I would be comfortable utilizing my rainbarrel water as drinking water if it were filtered and purified.
