  • I'd love too hook up my gutters to a collection system but there is just so much dirt and leaves in my gutter system because of the trees near my house, we clean them out regularly but no matter how hard we try it seems like there will always be a thick filter of rotting leaves at the drain points

  • I hate when he says "spic-it" its spigot.

  • I have seen people that instead letting the barrel over flow they attached another bucket to the side with a water hose

it would be great for some time when it is bouring down outside and would also protect you power oulets

  • Nice simple system. We plan on setting up a similar system soon. Currently we water the garden with the water from the air conditioner, lol. Not really for a WROL situation, but it is free water, and much better then just letting it run into the ground.

  • lol nevermind haha

  • Hey man , what the heck do you use to keep the misquito larva out , i tryed this and before the barell got full it fill up with nasty misquito eggs and bugs.

  • I am going to quit being a slacker and put some of these up. Where did you finds your local? The only ones on craigslist are in spartanburg.

  • It is amazing how much you can collect just from the morning dew. We have a barn with a metal roof and the amount of dew is great.

  • awesome!

  • great thinking there thanks for sharing

  • Where did you find those barrels for $10 each?

  • @climbingtothetop Locally but I cant find anymore, I bought 2 of them and now wished I bought more. I bought them orginally to store things in not water but they work great for water barrels.

  • @climbingtothetop TRY CRAIGSLIST,ALSO CALL LOCAL FARMERS..I SEE THEM EVERY WHERE..

  • @climbingtothetop Carwash places or other automotive places sometimes carry them. I recently picked one up for free from a carwash place. They carry soap in them

  • @climbingtothetop I worked at a car dealership these barrels had windshield washer in them. On any given day there would be 6-10 of them waiting to be cut up and thrown in a dumpster. They more than likely will be at the back of the building, maybe near the old tires. You should ask the service desk about getting some. I imagine they will gladly let you have them to save room in the dumpster.

  • A buddy of mine uses those square 300 gallon tanks the farmers use for spraying chemicals. I suppose they would be safe to use as long as you got them new.

  • We are saving tons of rain water. Maybe I'll do a video on this subject too.

  • First time I've watched one of your vids. Great job!

  • I have the plan to save rain water. Would not have helped me much this year anyway it hasnt rained in forever. This would be great for me this fall. Thanks for the video.

  • greats things to think about

  • thanks for the tips

  • Is it safe too drink water from off "regular shingles"? any chemicals to worry about?

  • Nice video

  • lol did you say bung hole?

  • Just got into the videos and prepping. I really enjoy seeing these! keep up the good work.

  • Another excellent video! Thanks for all the great info!

  • thanks!

  • One question.... what do you do with it in the winter? Your setup would likely freeze and crack up here in the cold midwest. Do you worry about freezes down South where you are located? I would think that a year round system would need to be located inside.

  • Great system. It should be noted that more and more cities are starting rain barrel programs that provide free or low cost rain barrels. The city I live in provides professionally made barrels complete with installation kits for a very low price ($45?). Your video has prompted me to investigate the program myself.

    Thanks!

  • hey can you please make a video of survivng a zombie apokalyps or at least a virus or somthing

  • @13336996 - You asked "hey can you please make a video of survivng a zombie apokalyps". You may not have noticed, but southernprepper1 lives in the real world and that's the great appeal of this site. Did you notice that he's done 122 videos? Look through those and take notes, read through all the comments and take more notes. Then act decisively on what you have written. When you have done all that you can sit back and watch zombie movies :-)

  • @Myrmecia well ok i took your advice and im doing it now ok i said zombies or a virus now zombies may not be real but a virus is so please make a video about maybey prepping for a virus that can cause the unfortunet end of the world think about it please reply to this comet thank you

  • Great Video! If water sits a while and gets stag net or scummy can you just boil it and then run it through a filter when you are ready to drink it?

Great Idea I would have never thought to check with our local Pepsi distributor to get food grade 55 Gallon Barrels. I was trying to find one of those large round back yard pools used or really cheap, I figure you can store allot of water that way and pretty cheap.

  • I think the govt has now made it illegal for us to collect rain water.

  • About how long will the water last in the drum last before it becomes stagnant, because i really dont have any shrubs or landscaping to water it would mostly be for a back up drinking supply seeing as if my power is out my water pumps is out. benifits of livng on a moutain in the hills of Kentucky.

  • Smart setup sir!

  • To filter that water you can use a 5 gal bucket with a 5, 10, 20 30 or 50 micron filter cartridge from the hardware store. The quick and easy method, but not necessarily rugged, is to drill a small hole in the bottom of a bucket, use silicone adhesive and plastic to cover and seal one end of the cartridge, and silicone the open end to the bottom of the bucket. A 5 micron filter can turn muddy water clear, and costs about $10. 5 layers of cotton over the opening of the bucket will help.

  • @InTheSticks0001 Clarification needed: "A 5 micron filter can turn muddy water clear, and costs about $10. "

The cost of the bucket, filter, and silicone can be had for a cheap as $10. The 5 cotton layers will help remove some of the fine silt, clays and larger debris that would clogged the very fine filter much sooner. Set the filter bucket on top of another bucket with a hole cut in it's lid and the water will drip into the lower bucket.

  • @InTheSticks0001 One can also use this same technique with a single ceramic Berkey water filter cartridge. Buy two replacement Berkey filter cartridges for about $99. Use the fist filter bucket already discussed to drip into the second bucket with the Berkey filter by drilling a hole in the lid of bucket #2, and use a third bucket on the bottom to catch the bacteria free and potable water. Put a valve in the third bucket and one would have a field expedient water processing plant. Works good

  • Great video, your Rooster sounds pissed though, lol

  • how are you getting that barrel for $12? great price

  • i better hurry and get my water drums set up

  • Another very excellent video to help motivate, thank you!

  • Hey SP, Are you making solar panels? I am starting my panel project with 3 panels, just received 108 grade A 3X6 solar cells. they provide .5 volts rated at 4-5 amps each. You can easily run a few appliances on these. I think I paid like $142. for these cells. It is my intention to go completely grid independent as money allows soon, but I will likely still tie into the grid, so they can pay me for anything over. Just curious on your stand on solar. I saw Engineer775 had solar setup for well.

  • @rebelprepper No Iam not making them but I do have some panels. I love solar but I have other needs first. I have 2 of the harbour freight systems that is for my ham and cb communication equipment and also to charge small batteries(AA,AAA,D). I have plans for some but I have in front of them a wood cook stove and a hand well pump first.

  • @rebelprepper Man, that is a great price on those panels. What company did you get them from?

  • @dataphreak

    Got them off ebay

    stores.ebay.com/from-STELLAR

  • Great Vid. Very Helpful and we all need a little help in some area!

  • Should get some kind of NBC filter on that pipe - don't forget Fukushima is still spewing radioactive particles no matter how little.

  • Your barrel should be painted black, dark enough to block out sun light. That is why your barrel is gettin crappy inside. The UV rays hit the water and grow algea if you block the sun it wont grow.

  • @Zippy1one Another reason is just dirty rain water off the roof sure does not help. I think I will build a box around it and this should help keep the sun out.

  • where can i get some rain barrels on the local level?

  • Where can you buy those 55gal drums at that are food grade for $10!? Every time we find one its $80! we just cant afford it...

  • @KentuckySurvivalist A local man sells them for $8-10 they come from pepsi company or a fruit juice company. They dont have the removeable tops but are food grade.

  • @KentuckySurvivalist check craigslist - also look in wholesale chemical distributors in your area

  • @KentuckySurvivalist I've had decent luck finding them on craigslist every few months. there was a guy locally to me (in Iowa) selling 55 gal drums that held vanilla, so they're food safe, for $6 a piece.

  • @KentuckySurvivalist Check craigslsit or ask around food stores or bakeries.

  • SP1 you never fail to amaze me. taking full advantage of the water spout, what a good quick fix to a water problem unless you have a draught

  • Since you have tons of long term storage food, you should have a southernprepper1 giveaway contest?

  • Thanks man, from someone like you it means alot. Got all my stuff ready for the Hurricane, live right in the path. Confident we will be ok (water, food, power, tools and entertainment), thanks alot guys. Alot of that is due to the people on here. Take care and have a great day everyone, be safe.

  • Great video as always. I have learned so much from watch your videos. I wonder if you could use pantyhose to make your filter or would they be to prone to rips and tears? They are inexpensive, don't take up much space if you wanted to stock pile them, and most women probably already have a few pair.

  • great video.......

  • Dude you have some great videos, watch them all. I know I am a little piss ant so would not expect a responce. Just wanted you to know great videos and I will be out here, following. Take care and have a great day.

  • @ewtoutdoors Your not a piss ant at all...your a fellow prepper and a fellow american we are all in this together. Take care and thanks for your support.

  • I absolutely love the cabin you built with your hands, hope you show what the rest of it looks like one day =)

  • any tips for the hurrican zone ppl cus im at were its going to hit the worst.

  • Your porch looks like it could also become a good fighting position with the amount of ballistic protection the earth and concrete blocks provide.

  • Howdy from SC

This is kinda strange. My nephew just brought me a 55 gal. barrel today. God loves me. What did you make the lid out of? Thanks for the video and God bless.

  • @carr869 The barrel came with the lid. I wished I bought more like this one because they are hard to find like this one.

  • Great video. Good ideas and will make people think. Thanks for sharing...

  • do you need to keep the water clean somehow while it's stored in there? or is there a time limit on when the water should be replaced if it's not regularly used? Thanks

  • are you in the hurricane zone

  • @teenprepper96 Iam in the upstate so far enough away.

  • @teenprepper96 He's in Tennessee i believe

  • Awesome idea david thanks

  • yes good set up, but if you paint barrel black it will stop the alge growth and bacteria too , and just add 1/4 cup of bleach

  • Remember not to drink the rain water because of the Nuclear fall out from Fukashima melt through that is accuring with no end in site..Thanks.

  • never discard dirty , soapy water , use it to water plants , the soapy water keeps the bugs away from plants

  • I suggest using a 1/4 turn ball valve for your hose bib "AKA spigot" because they will last for ever and will not have any leaks. A regular turn hose bib will start to leak over time then you have to mess with changing the washer inside. Also if you live in an area that freezes a ball value will do a lot better than a regular turn valve.

  • Great stuff as always!!

  • We have two rain barrels that are connected and we use them for watering our tomatoes strawberries and peppers :D free water!!!

  • Great setup! I like this idea very much & will be implementing this. Thanks so much for another great video. God bless.

  • could you hook up a carbon/coal filter on the big pipe coming down.. thus kinda double filtering it?

  • @coozy100 Probably not because when it pours the water really fills the barrel very fast and the filter probably will not handle the amount in a short time. But I like your idea about the filter and I need to make one that I can take water from the barrel and pour into another container that will filter it before I put it in my berkey filter.

  • @southernprepper1 yeah cuz way back in school they taught us to do that. hah a bit of a kitty project.could be cool if you set it up in pvc.. the top would have a screw type apparatus to force the water out of a lower bottom hole.. like semi portable filtering.

  • @coozy100 - You asked "could you hook up a carbon/coal filter on the big pipe coming down..." Look at it from a different perspective. If you live in the country or even a small city, you won't need a filter (unless there is a polluting factory upwind). Sure, there will be algae and microbes in the water and the runoff will include a bit of bird poop, but you should train your body to adapt to this. Better than being obsessive about hygiene in a WROL situation and going cold turkey.

  • @Myrmecia true

  • Nice and simple, I like that. Liked the chickens and ravens as background audio too :-)

  • Here in the desert this is great web site for info:

    harvestingrainwater

  • Where'd you get the $10 barrel from?

  • @kitsunegames Look on craiglists they have them on that site.

  • @southernprepper1 Thank you.

  • Nice work! I'd just put a 4" tube or hose on the side up top so when the barrel is full it would run back out to the flower bed. I'd also paint the top and sides of the barrel so the day light wont cause Algae to grow inside. I always look forward to your videos.

  • how often do you have to scrub it out?

  • @tamarleigh I scrub it out every 3 or 4 weeks but it could go longer but I just like to keep it clean in case I need it. But its fine for watering the plants if I go longer.

  • @southernprepper1 howd you start that lovely house of yours? As i know this is your stead.

  • @southernprepper1 - You told us "I scrub it out every 3 or 4 weeks...." Note that some food grade plastic products have a very thin (a few microns) coating that is food grade. This covers the barrel which itself might not be food grade. Scrubbing would remove the thin coating quickly. The barrels are made for a single use and that's why they are so cheap. There is a risk that toxic plastics (phthalates, BPA, PBDE etc.) could leach into your water. Something to keep in mind with cheap stuff.

  • To water your plants, you could drop a submersible pump in the barrel(with a hose connected) no waiting and no buckets to haul

  • Thank you for the video! I've wanted to do this but not had it all mapped out yet so this helped alot. Quick question..

Where do i get a barrel like that?

  • You had some *very* good points about having access into the barrel for cleaning and filling a bucket. Thanks for the video!

  • Great job.... love the channel.

  • how about prepping a water barrel that size for drinking????What would you recommend doing to the water???

  • @ketel1 I would run the water thru a berkey or monotholic filter or any good qualtiy filter. Or if you dont have a filter bleach or any of the other pool chemicals that do the same thing.

  • for drinking water try a 12 volt fish tank blubber it prevents a build up of algae , depends on how much sunlight you have and the barrels location. Boxing in is good it keeps it in the dark.

cannot believe I posted the first comment on this vid with on 3 views, great viv S/P

    keep up the good work

  • IT HAS BEEN AWHILE. GLAD TO SEE YOU POSTING AGAIN. THUMBS UP!! THANKS AND KEEP EM COMMING

  • ¡great!

  • Great setup, David! Thanks.

  • I have two rainbarrels that I use for watering my plants and young fruit trees. I've had them for years and I love having that free water source available. I would be comfortable utilizing my rainbarrel water as drinking water if it were filtered and purified.

  • thanks SP

  • Nice video man... thanks for all the info you give us here. I may be 14 and so far I've stocked up an enitre closet full of food and 2 ammo crates of .22 and 30_06 ammo(only guns I got) and My parents think im stupid but when I'm ready and there not. I guess they'll thank me...
