  • Importance of Gaandhism is realized by Indians only after they go to a foreign country. They finally see even if they stay in a different country they cannot belong to any other place except India. It runs in blood and it cannot be changed. Proud to be Indian. Proud of Gandhi

  • Avery soothing and comforting bhajan sung by great legendary Lata Mangeshkar.

Gandhiji desired all of us to hear this bhajan and take care of less fortunate peoplw.Let us do some thing for them.

  • Great philosophy expressed through simple and honest words. I am a Bengali and I checked the translation from internet. This has to be one of the finest hymns of Indian culture and tradition. This was one of Bapu's favorite and Lata Mangeshkar does full justice to this song.

  • song for the ages

  • This prayer was written by the great Hindu devotee (not a saint) Narsinh Mehta. He was born in Saurashtra, Gujarat and was a devoted Krishna Bhakta.

respects women as he respects his own mother

Never touches the property of others.

A Vaishnav does not succumb to worldly attachments

he has renounced lust of all types and anger

The poet Narsi will like to see such a person By who's virtue,

    the entire family gets salvation

  • One who is a Vaishnav (Devotee of Vishnu)

    Knows the pain of others

    Does good to others

without letting pride enter his mind.

A Vaishnav, Tolerates and praises the the entire world.

Does not speak ill of others

Keeps his promises, actions and thoughts pure

    your mother is blessed indeed.

  • Gandhi was a great soul and fought for peace and harmony in India. Great is His mom who gave birth to Him. Great to hear about this noble man!

  • peace is good .but now india has to be aggressive and take action.

india has forgot the sayings of krishna bhagwan in mahabharata and only remembered gandhiji for peace.

    everybody loves peace.

  • masaakalli

  • Speak only as godlike of the man who feels another's pain Who shares another's sorrow and pride does disdain Who regards himself lowliest of the low Speaks not a word of evil against anyone Blessed is the mother who gave birth to such a son Who looks upon everyone as his equal, Lust he has renounced Who honours women like he honours his mother Whose tongue knows not the taste of falsehood Nor covets another's worldly goods
  • Who longs not for worldly wealth (or fame)

For he treads the path of renunciation

Ever on his lips is Ram's holy name

All places of pilgrimage are within him

He has conquered greed, is free of deceit, lust and anger

Through him Narsinh has godly vision

And his generation to come will attain salvation.

  • excellent stuff..thanx for uploading!

  • If every person in the world lives following the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and strives to be a Vaishnava, as enunciated in this great song, all the problems of the world will be easily solved.

  • Translation: [One who is a vaishnav] [Knows the pain of others] [Does good to others] [Does not let pride enter his mind] [Tolerates and praises the the entire world] [Does not say bad things about anyone] [Keeps his/her words, actions and thoughts pure] [O Vaishnav, your mother is blessed ] [A Vaishnav sees everything equally, rejects greed and avarice] [Considers some one else's wife/daughter as his mother] [ He who's tongue might tire, but doesn't lie]

  • [Does not even touch someone else's property] [A Vaishnav does not succumb to worldly attachments] [Who has devoted himself to staunch detachment to worldly pleasures] [Who has been edicted to the elixir coming by the name of Ram] [For whom all the religious sites are in the mind] [Who has no greed and deciet] [He who has renounced lust anger of all forms] [The poet Narsi will like to see such a person] [By who's virtue, the entire family gets salvation]

  • I always see people taking the lyrics of this bhajan way to literally. The term "Vaishnav" is a generic way of referring to anyone who "knows" the lord. Anyone whose true aim in life is to attain salvation.

  • @jawtir Thank you very much for taking time and getting us the translation. Regards.

  • pt jasraj sang this song under bharatbala.... album name india unlimited...... if possible please add that one

  • Lataji's rendition is one of best ones....thanks for uploading....

  • gr8 work.....thnx a lot for uploading

  • gives a great pleasing effect on hearing... nice song...

  • such an amazing song, thank you for posting this!

  • Dear Itslamar, thanks a lot for the beauiful translation. Just one suggestion - Vaishnav is a generic terms and is as Indian as is Gujarati. For example 95% of Manipur is Vaishnav. However, one must concede that the observance of principles of Vaishnavism is much better in Gujarat at mass scale.

  • thanks for posting this song.. :)

  • "Van-lobhi ne kapat-rahit cche, Kaam-krodh niverya re,

Bhnw narasainyo teni darshan karta, KUl 71 tarya re"

"Who is free of greed and who is free of cheating,

Narsainyo (the poet) bows to hime, he made 71 generations of him free of sin "

    "Va...."

"The vaishnav (or a civilized man) is the one who feels the pain of others"

  • @itslamar thank you for translation!

  • "mOHAMAYA VYAPE NAHI JENE, dRIDH VAIRAGYA JENA MANN MAA RE

Ram-naam shu taali vaagi, sakal tirth jena tan maa re"

    V......,

"Who is free of desires and weaknesses, firm ditachment is in his mind,

The name of Lord Rama (God) is small (a joke), all the holy places are in his body"

"The vaishnav (or a civilized man) is the one who feels the pain of others"

  • "Samdrishti ne trishantyagi, Parstree jene Mat re.

Jihva thaki asatya na bole, par-dhan nav jhale has re"

    "V....."

"Who sees all as equal and who is free of desire, the women of other (families) are like mother to him,

who never speaks a lie, who never touches the money thats not his"

"The vaishnav (or a civilized man) is the one who feels the pain of others""

  • "sakal lok ma sahu me vande, ninda na kare keni re,

Vacch-kacch mann nischaal rakkhe, dhan-dhan Janani teni re"

    "Vashanjan...."

"Who respects all inn the whole universe, never speaks foul of anyone,

who is equanimious, devine is his mother"

  • "Vaishanvjan to tene kahiye je pid parai jane re

Par-dukkhe upkaar kare to ye man-abhimaan na aane re"

    "Vashanjan...."

    Transalation:

"The vaishnav (or a civilized man) is the one who feels the pain of others,

One who helps others in their times of trial yet is not proud about it "

"Repeat first line of the above stanza"

  • Vaishanav: They are a people in the western state of India, Gujarat, who follow a strict code of diet, worship and lifestyle as a whole as their devotion to lord vishu.

The song, the title: "Vaishnavjan to tene re kahiye" Literally means "Who that is (should/can) be called a 'Vaishanav'"

Vaishanav in a generic term can be taken as a gentleman or a civilized man. This song has mild sarcastic undercurrent ot it as well.

  • Composer: Narsingh Mehta (or it can be spelled "Maheta"). He himself was a Vaishnav (Someone correct me if I am wrong.). He lived in the town of junagadh in the state of Gujarat. He was a devotte of Lord krishan. Please refer Wikipedia for Narsingh Mehta for more details.

Vaishanav: They are a people in the western state of India, Gujarat, who follow a strict code of diet, worship and lifestyle as a whole as their devotion to lord vishu.

  • There have been people commenting on the lyric and meaning of the (Devotional) song. I am giving it a try. This is how I understand it.

  • I would like to know the meaning of the lyrics -- in english or hindi

  • love this song!

  • "I believe that Gandhi's views were the most enlightened of all the political men in our time.

We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence in fighting for our cause, but by non-participation in anything you believe is evil. " - Albert Einstein
