Ian Paice is one of the most underappreicated underated drummers of modern times. He has this ability to combine the old and new school train of thought to his playing yet is able to remain releveant throughtout the whole thing. The only way you can achieve something like that is if the passion comes from a deep authenitc love for the instrument of all the drummers that remain from his era, Paice hands down has the most developed chops
I've beena working drummer forever and one of my most listened to albums would be Burn. Listen to that album if you want to see what Ian Pace can do! Especially "Burn" or "You Fool No One". He is a total badass.
A very instinctive drummer, who literaly plays what he's feeling at the moment, as opposed to some rigid, composistional drummers, like Peart or Bozzio. As far as overuse of the snare, it's really the quick, crisp response of that drum wich reveals your true chops, not the muddy, long-sustaining toms.
you're right about rigid drummers. i think you should take a look at tim alexander, just type in YT ; tim alexander hallucino, and its the 1st one. youll like it
This is supposedly the father of today's hard rock drumming scene, he is a very clean player but seems to overuse the snare drum in his solos. I'm a A7X fan and they do a lot of hard rock and it's hard to notice a relation between the Rev's style and Paice's but I'm sure it's there
please no one take this the wrong way. i believe that ian paice and john bonham are both brilliant drummers. im just saying that bonzo has better foot control. please no one take it the wrong way. i idolize both of them.
jgeorgel are you making stupid remarks on purpose, is it a joke? A solo is not the best way to appreciate a drummer, in my opinion, and it is often too long. Ian is a very versatile musicien, who can play "speed" rock (ted the mechanic) or jazzy, but he must not be compared, he is good and the best in His style. Like Bonzo, all these guys
made music history. Now new drummers tend to play the same way, having learned from the same basics.
I have met Paicey, and have seen Cozy Powell, Neill Pert, and many many other drummers, they would all laugh if they thought we were trying to decide who the best is. I think the truth is, that they are all great, for the music, and style they play. It seems to me that all the bad comments come from small minded little kid's who don't know 1 end of a drumstick from the other. Kevin best drummer in my basement
@celticfan61 I agree strongly with this. The more I drum, the more I realize how each drummer is great in their own way. Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart, Ian Paice...they are all equally great. In my personal opinion, Bonzo lives on in Ian Paice.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i'm am much better of this pace. his old shool drumer. me. i play a more a moderne druming with more conteporery stile of playing on the dums. him. his is boering stuff.
Ian Paice has been playing in Deep Purple since they started, more or less...
I was so lucky back in November 2003 to have a conversation with him and the band's vocalist Ian Gillan (been there most of the years Deep Purple have been existing) and Roger Glover (bassguitar).
But Ian Paice has played a lot of nice and long drumsolos through the years. Still I think the solo from the song named The Mule from the Made in Japan record must be the best solo ever by him!
That is a very interesting set-up he has. I am not use to seeing toms set up in that fashion. It's kind of unique. Paice is a hell of a drummer. I myself am not a drummer but I am a trained musician and I would kill to have any drummer that could play like Paice, Baker, Bonham, and Peart. They are all incredible rock drummers!!
Not just incredible rock drummers, incredible drummers too. Trust me, you make a list of the greatest 100 that ever lived, combined with the jazz, they on there. You can tell by the way Paice plays though that his two biggest influences were Buddy Rich and John Bonham. Probably an indicator of how good those two are if they influence a drummer as good as Paice is.
You see, in the early 70's, before the onslought of Disco, soloing was mandatory for the members of these "Supergroups", and it was almost like sports competition. Contstant comparisons were beng made in rock rags, like "Cream" and "Circus". Many heated arguements arose between Sabbath, Purple, and Zep fans. I'm a product of that generation, so let me revel in nostalgia, I mean no harm.
Let's not forget that Paice was probably the first rock drummer to use double bass at a quick tempo as in "Fireball". Even on "Hey Cisco" from "Purpendicular", wich is no more than a shuffle beat, it's the way he applies it. It's all about his personal touch and individual style. Hard to believe he's self taught from books.
Incorrect actually. Ginger Baker holds that title. The great rock drummers like Bonham, Baker, and Paice IMO trump a lot of others simply because they were all self-taught...well, Baker took lessons from Phil Seaman, but they only made him better. Paice (i think),like Baker and Bonzo, has incredible improvisational skills.

That is probably true, although you oughta hear the way he uses the double-kick in the 1968 version of Toad...Cream's Last Concert. he made the most of having a double-bass there.
Yes, I watched the more recent Cream reunion concerts, and I'M SO GLAD that the old man made good. That's the way to go out, show 'em you still got it. I can remember when rock musicians were not household names. It was an underground thing for the hip crowd. Know the TV commercial for some digital camera where Steven Tyler walks into a restaurant? Money talks, but man it's been so cheapened.
Stunning technique combined wih the improvisation feel that only the jazz style can offer, then re-packed into the heavy beats of hard-rock. Just amazing, one of few drummers who´s style and sound could be recognized in any music context. Heard for the first time you´re just amazed and quiet. Second time around you starts to wonder what the hell he is doing. Then you are caught by his rythm feel and just want to hear and know more. SIMPLY THE BEST imaginative drummer there is today!
I don't know anything about playing the drums, but Paicey has a quality of playing and a feel that makes other drummers sound totally wooden. He really is the best. When Purple did 'Perfect Strangers', they (i.e. Blackers) made him play like a metronome - a criminal waste of Paicey's enormous talent.
Let us respect the departed indeed...but let us pay attention to the ones that are still alive. Ian is still with us, let him get the credit he deserves. I am watching him in action for the first time.

While I don't count freehand technique rolling as being anywhere near the same category as Rich's "I'm really just moving that fast" technique...I do agree on the love of his ability, like Bonzo, Baker, and a few others, the play a tasteful and impressive solo without overplaying.
You are right. None of them need to overplay to impress. Paice, Baker, and Bonzo all had/have (since Bonzo is dead now), an incredible feel for the groove. When these guys did overplay it was quite a sight to behold.
Ian Paice is a very interesting drummer that's for sure. You can hear many forms of drumming throughout this...I think he may be using Ludwigs combined with a Pearl bass drum because he sounds like Buddy at times soundwise at least. Bonzo clearly had a HUGE influence on Paice...the thing I like about Paice is that he does his own thing, just like Bonzo and Baker did. Paice is truly one of the best rock drummers.
Bonham was a different animal altogether. More neanderthal, a little earlier on the evolutionary chain. Paice is more upright, modern man. Paice is technicly the better drummer, but Bonham, because of his notoriety with Zeppelin, was the more influential. He sold more records, and got more airplay.
The best, he has everything a drummer wish to have:the soft touch, the velocity, the imagination, incredible hand technic, coolness attitude, experience....he is as good as his band: Deep Purple!!!!
He seems to be talking to himself. He is one of the best under rated drummers.

Awesome drum phrasing!!! Melodical.
