i love this brilliant paddle steamer! i've seen her on my many cruises out of New Orleans! this year i was aboard the Norwegian Spirit and she was due to leave in a couple of hours when i heard the Natchez's beautiful calliope. it made my brother stop dead in his tracks! you guys do a great job, keep up the great work and thanks for posting this!
I went to the French Quarter today. It echoes throughout the place and sounds great! :) The Natchez looked great as well, all decked out in Christmas decorations!!! Great job!!!
I've always wanted to see and hear this Calliope on the Natchez. I play a similar one in Melbourne Australia. Love the lights, that really adds another dimension to it. Great music, many thanks.
There are many videos of this instrument on here...search Natchez Calliope and I am sure you fwill find a bunch of them! There are quite a fw really good wideos with Debbie Fagiano and Capt. Clarke "Doc" Hawley playing it. I was a sub during an out of town trip. They are the regulars!
My wife, son and I were on a dinner cruise on the Natchez at the last Tall Stacks in Cincinnati. I wanted to see the calliope, but this deck was off limits at the time. We still got to enjoy the music and the echoes it made under the bridges.

How fun. Love the colored lights indicating the notes.
Why is the sound so far off from the video?
Here, it matters.

I think the delay has something to do with the camera I had back then. Because many of my videos shot with the Nicon had the same problem.

I thought DOC Holiday was the callipopist... He had a CD out.. Love the calliope music
tugboatannie 4 years ago
You're probably thinking of Capt. Clarke "Doc" Hawley. He was the first master on the Str. Natchez and to this day still gives calliope "concerts."
pianomanthree16 4 years ago
Yep, that's the guy, I knew the minute I wrote that Holiday, I was t totally wrong.. I met him several times down through the years.
He is a member of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen...so am I..
