Thanks for taking the time to reply to my last question. I am interested to know about the thread/cord you use to hand stitch the leather to the wood clapper.
What is it or where can I get it and should it be thicker than the needle? Do you use special needles?
I use normal sharp sewing needles, called "Modistinnadel, No.10" in Germany. I dont use triangular pointed "glovers needles" (Kürschnernadeln) or blund/dull pointed needles (Schusternadeln).
IMHO every thread/cord wich is not plaited (?=>geflochten) is ok, I use always thread wich is twisted (verdrillt). I prefer synthetic threat, thicknes about 0.8-1.0mm, the thicknes of the needle is ca. 1,0mm.
I dont use a special brand of therat/cord, I use "Kabelbinderschnur","sythetische Sehne", "Segelmachergarn","Loctite 55"..., dont know the englich names.
In my video "Dudelsack nähen - Teil 3 -Nähen" you could see why I use only twisted threat (video is only in german, but I think you will understand what I#m doing).
argh, at 7.39 I made the inlet valve, not the outlet.
Valve body is bored cylindrical, plug in chuck is cylindrical too.
the plug is turned a little bit undersize, than I made some scratches/marks with the tip of a skew on the plug and put some water on the plug ( ok, I use spit) , the wood fibers swell and the working pice holds on the plug.
Markus; Thanks for posting these great videos on making bellows. How about making one that shows how you make the hinge? I need to make a bellows for my Northumbrian smallpipes. What kind of glue are you using on the leather? You work preyy quickly. You must have been doiung this for quite some time.
The hinge on this bellows is only a thick thread / cord (?), pulled through the 4 holes. See video#4 I uploaded today.
I use a contact adhesive, I get this from a local shoemaker, but it is nothing special. You could use something like "pattex", a well known contact adhesive in Germany. I think you get “pattex” everywhere in Europe, outside Europe I dont know.
Ha, ha. Actually, I wanted to see how you make a bag cover. Google translater must have been confused. In English, breeding a farm animal it is sometimes said that the male 'covers' the female.
Your videos are all fascinating. Do you really live in Arizona? I would very much like to see a video of you turning pipes and boring them.
I use a template to cut my bags, so its is easy to make a cover. I cut the cloth a little bit bigger, ~1" , so the cover is not to tight over the bag. I have the position of the stocks marked on the template too, so it is also easy to cut the holes for the stocks in the cover.
For a bag I dont have a template, I replace "long stocks" with flat tied in wood plugs.
Blow the bag up, put the cloth over the bag, fix the shape with needles, cut/sewn the cover...
I BEG YOUR PARDON, that is my private businnes...
;-)...,die Beutel deckt..
could mean: How you inseminate /cover the bag
But you mean of course : How I seal the bags.
I use to for bellows blown bagpipe-bags a airtight leather, so no seasoningis for the first 3-5 years is necessary. The seasoning I use is a mixture of hideglue (bone glue ?) and glycerol, this seasoning is used in Germany very often (exept for GHB).

Hi, Very nice video. I'm puzzled at how you prevent the blackwood from slipping when turning it at 7.39 ?
Same at 10.11 with brass, is it just pressure from the tailstock?
I tried that and wood burns with friction.

@whityewantin
7.39
the bellows outlet is conical reamed, taper 1:25, I use a old chello plug reamer.
When turning the outlet I put it on a conical plug with the same tapper.
10.11
simply friction and pressure, the parts I use to clamp the brass disk are made from POM (Polyoxymethylen, Polyacetal )

I have to apologize for this, I live in Detmold/ Germany.
"Benson, Arizona" is the theme song of Carpenter`s movie "Darkstar" and one of my favorite songs ( and movies) .
You need some "goals" in your life, and one of my goals is to walk with a surfboard under my arm through Benson,Arizona.
Why ? Search for "Dark Star - Finale " on youtube, thelast miniutes
I like that my "hometown" is Benson, Arizona....

Thank you that you like the video and for the effort to translate your comment.
You ask: Do you make reeds for NSP too ?
Yes, I do. I make them in the same way as Collin Ross, I build them wet and scrap them dry.
