I'm also a volunteer firefighter, first responder, and SAR Tech, and just like you, i wanted to be there to help the community, and i fell in love, i started firefighting at 18, i am 21 now. I have never looked back on a call and wished i wasn't there, even a search that ended up being a carry out, and i had been awake for 29 hours before falling asleep in the shower, i loved this video, and i wish there were more people like the people who makes these videos. This video made me cry.. i am a firefighter, Volunteer.. I am also a Emt but its amazing.. how i started this because i wanted to be that face in your time of an emergency that is calm and says HEY I AM HERE TO HELP.. never thought i'd actually fall in love with it.. :-) and i have to say (Crying) there's no better feeling to have that feeling like you made a difference. :-) i serv my community in hope that one day, you will help others in need too.. We're no heroes, just people with a passion.

Depends on the department. You should get some decent incentive pay for having a medic cert even if the department you get hired on by doesn't require it.

yea good pay but if you want you can go two steps higher and become a flight parimedic wich is awsome pay

nothing gurantees you a job, it will help you be a better candidate for the job at hand

you have to tryout of a fire house to see if their are any openings, next you have to try and get the job with 300+ other apps. and if your lucky and get the job you will have to take their state fire academy. so takeing it not is probly going to be a wast of time. best you can do is get a job as an EMT, vol at a fire house to they have an opening, then try your luck that way.

it gives you a better chance then someone with an EMT-B or EMT-I, but you will still be put up against other people who have their paramedic as well, its pretty much who knows their stuff the best and scores highest on the test

when i first saw the movie backdraft i wanted to be a firfighter and then my house caught fire on nov 1 of 2007 and now i run with the voulenteer dept that was first on response for my house fire... its a great feeling and you know i always looked up to these guys as heros, but now that i am one i hope i can be some ones hero and serve my community... stay safe brothers sisters, and rest in peace to my fallen brothers...

Interesting. I spotted the comment about firefighters not considering themselves heroes. So TRUE. In October 2001, I was speaking to my cousin and a firefighter friend of his (both in FDNY), both surviving the collapse of tower 2 (WTC). We had been referring to them as heroes for their valor on 9/11. Both thanked us, but both considered it all part of he job. A show of humbleness. This humbleness still chokes me up to this day. God bless them all.
