House Paint (oil based, of course. Considering the time period, some paints may contain lead.

It wasn't House Paint but Airplane and Car Paint that was not too much liquid and could stay in "shape" without going anywhere... (sorry for my bad english)

From "About.com" I found this: "... he turned to the new synthetic resin-based paints on the market (generally called ‘gloss enamel’), made for industrial purposes such as spray-painting cars or household interior decorating. He would continue using gloss enamel paint until his death."
