Shortly after Joe's death I had the opportunity to play his old horn.Long story but the one from all the classic abums etc.I played Recorda me on it and gave it back, straight away . Musos who have all his work will understand how I felt. Joe Henderson one of the greats.
@cruzonsax No sorry I don't.,Checked your channel, excellent .Not many of us into jazz in the world So . I guess we got stick together and forever remain optimistic.
The pianist is Helio Alves. The drummer doesnt appear, so I dont know. The bassist is Nilson Matta, who was playing with Henderson on that tour. There is another video in which they play A Felicidade.
A real master at work. I first saw Joe Henderson back in the early 70's. Loved him every since. Great musician!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!My favorite album by him is, "Mode For Joe". Every song is "off the hook".
@rbrhrbr I believe this is from a concert honoring Jobim in 1994, some months before Jobim's death. Various jazz greats performed, including Herbie Hancock, Shirley Horn, Henderson, and a couple of female Brazilian vocalists, whose names escape me. Jobim performed several of his compositions as well. I had it on VHS at one time, but have misplaced it over the years. Don't know if it's still available, or on DVD or not. I believe the title was "Jobim, an All-Star Tribute" or something like that.
There is an album of this. It's called 'Double Rainbow' and is all Jobim tunes including this duo version. It's an amazing album (Joe's last i think). The first half is a brazilian cats with Eliane Elias on piano and then the second half is a quartet with Herbie, Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette and everyone is shining. Definately worth checking out!
Never heard of these guys before. Shame. But at least I did, and I can now enjoy them. I keep finding more brilliant musicians all the time since I discovered jazz. I can't listen to my radio anymore. It introduced me to Stevie Ray and the blues, so it did one good thing once. It serves no purpose anymore. Internet radio has a LOT more promise to help us find music that is actually good. There is so much out there. I can't get it on my radio. But I can get it on the internet and in stores.

@billroue hey there ! Just bumped into this video today ( Feb.2011) although I already knew the album.
The names of the brazilian musicians ( spectacular !!!! ) are : Oscar Castro Neves ( guitar), Eliane Elias ( piano ) NIco Assumpção ( bass ) Paulo Braga ( drums )
@cissaclark Thanks for the imfo , but I'm a little confused as the piano player looks like a guy to me especially having a bald spot on his head. Are we talking about a different video maybe?
@billroue hahaha !! sorry and no, I meant the brazilians musicians participating in the album. In this particular video there's only the guitar ( Castro Neves and Joe ) There is a lot more of the american team too, guys like Herbie Hancock , to name one. I have no clue who the guy on the piano is, Sorry !
That is the beaty of the thing called jazz. Spontaneous creation wrapped in lyricism and indivuality that can play the same so different each time it performed. I guess listening to Joe for 40 years leaves me biased to this master.
If you insist...I thouht it was a bit too busy and not lyrical enough for this beautiful bossa. I much prefer Joe´s earlier version of it on " The Kicker" album (w. Kenny Barron, Ron Carter and Louis Hayes) : more relaxed tempo and much more lyrical solos.
I was at this show, his tone was so warm. he felt like he was sitting next to you even though i was way up in the nose bleed seats..incredible spirit.
Everyone in school is obsessed with 'those who shall not be named'. They have no musical talent in any way, and as you said why arn't legends like these loved just as much as them?
The big labels in today's music industry figure that it's easier, and much more profitable, to dictate to us what they want us to accept as music. They insure their stranglehold on our thoughts by holding 17 awards shows every damn year. By selling us a product that can be produced by an endless pool of average talent, they assume control over the industry, and the modern pop artist (I use the term artist VERY loosly here) is but a pawn within the grand scheme of industrial commercialism.
yeah, I went a bit far in stating the obvious. I had a few in me that night. but what I said is pretty much true. Maybe you can let us know why you're feeling offended by my statement.
@rsmard and i think that also makes it hard for real original artists to come through and gain prominence. because you have to sort of "play the game" instead of being original
@tk100 you're right. I have no idea why people today have no interest in jazz music/brazilian music. What happened? Compare Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim to today's pop music; it's a disgrace!
I was lucky enough to see Joe about 3 times when I was a teen. Man, I loved his tone and his subtle touches. What a great musician. Every musician should own his album, "Mode for Joe". Every musician is stellar and every cut is killer.
The guitar player is Oscar Castro Neves, from Brazil. He was a very close friend and colaborator to Antonio Carlos Jobim, the composer of this, and hundreds of wonderful songs.
Yes, very nice. My favourite for tenor. The other so-called "greats" seem to carpet bomb their pieces with shrieking cascades of notes. Joe has an eye (ear) for sheer beauty. Hmm, I might have to revisit my own YT version.
super smooth--attended college with leon henderson, Joe's youngest brother,,,also a great sax player, never made it big like his bro. all from Lima, Ohio--we attended Kentucky State University--Joe passed away in Lima--from large family ,around 16 brothers and sisters.
Yes this is nice--and Oscar is a great player too. But I do feel he tends to be a bit "busy". Gilberto would be much more sparing in his comping-as would some other greats like Horta
I'm so glad to see this tune I heard played by Joe before,on video. "Saxaphone Joe"is one of the greatest jazz tenor players of all times.Isn't that Oscar Casrto-Neves on guitar?
