hi all, I first heard this song way back in early 80-s, thanx 2 the short-wave BBC World Service. It was something like 'Counterpoint' or a similar programme. I was a student of English in Russia then. Remember the broadcaster's comment after the song, after a pause and in whisper: 'Lovely...' Indeed.
It took me a quarter century to find and hear a good quality version, without sw fadings or jammings.
One of the best bands ever. Haunting and atmospheric. I associate the band mostly with the TV series 'Robin of Sherwood'. I just wish they could release the music from Seasons 2 and 3...which also made extensive use of the Prophet 5, Yamaha DX7 synthesizers and Roland TR707 drum machine. Damn I'm a geek....none of you probably know what Im talking about LOL
One of the few songs in Gaelic to reach the UK top 10. Yes, Enya's 'Book of Days' (originally in Gaelic, changed for single release) reached No.1, and still retained a Gaelic middle-8. Does that count?
@nmacparthalain Not really -- Gaelic is a family of languages that includes Irish Gaelic, Scots Gaelic, and Manx Gaelic. The three together form half of the Celtic branch of Indo-European languages.
@jitsukerr Thank you - you have just proven my point and contradicted yourself into the bargain. "Gaelic is a *family* of languages" i.e. not *a* single language. This song is written in the Irish language, which is my first language, I can understand it. If it was written in Manx or scots-gaelic I wouldn't. German and Dutch are both Germanic languages, but you would not describe a song written in Dutch as being written in "Germanic" - would you?
@nmacparthalain I haven't contradicted myself. I originally said "one of the few songs in Gaelic", meaning _any_ form of Gaelic, not limiting myself to Irish Gaelic. I was being inclusive, not exclusive. I could quite happily say "a few songs in a Germanic language" and mean the same kind of inclusivity. Your insistence that the song is in Irish Gaelic is both correct, and at the same time unnecessary pedantry.
@jitsukerr I'm must say, never before have I had my mother tongue and it's linguistic heritage reduced to 'pedantry'. I have not insisted anything, merely pointed out that this song is in Irish - is that such a difficult fact to accept? A simple: "I'm sorry" would have sufficed, but you seem intent on being obtuse about it.
I think the song was originally for a film about the Northern Ireland situation. At least I assume that's why the politics came up. Not really the place for a debate about politics though... Great song anyway :)
A portion of this song and video are featured in the Harrison Ford movie, "Patriot Games" also starring Patrick Bergen. That is how I first heard this song. Didn't hear of Harry's Game until much later.
Harry's Game is just a name, the show is only 3 episodes and tells of an undercover British agent sent to track down a terrorist in Ireland, it took place during The Troubles in Ireland when Britian attempted to retake Ireland as part of their nation and this resulted in a Civil War between the Catholics and Protestants
The English didn't invent tyranny. If you look at the history of Homo Sapiens, there isn't a sub-group (race) in existence that doesn't have someones blood on it's hands. IMHO, we are vicious monkeys in pants, but on the plus side, it puts us on top of the food chain.
ZEE339 May I suggest you look under "Ireland troubles" markymarkdcu has put up the documentaries for.The troubles were a very HARD time for Ireland.Ireland fought oppression from the England for 800 years. And Ireland is STILL not united.England still occupies N Ireland.
Is Ireland democratic, or has it changed? I thought that NI had voted to remain in the UK?
They did, but seeing as Catholicism does not allow contraception, the Catholic population will increase, and if another referendum should come along, they will vote for unity. And don't say I'm racist; I'm a Catholic.
And also, I don't know how you can call it occupation if the people chose to be part of it. I resent the view you put of England. England is hardly a nation anymore, anyway. It's the UK... and NI is part of it.
Well The resentment of the view I put on England, is that England is directly responsible for all the bloodshed and years of Oppression and occupation.
It's not all English people I am saying things about here,Not the people in General I have a problem with, but the Government has been historically Tyrannical.
Some very valid points made. I can see what you mean, but your points are vague, and I took them in a different way than intended. And Britain is no longer the Imperial Empire that it once was, so please don't hold the resentment of England that you do!
And an Aerial shot of the UK shows NI as well! I do realise how Eire (I think that's it) may want the unity of Ireland, and I'm sure one day they'll get it. But the troubles were the result of the split anyway.
From what Ive seen most governments hisorically or otherwise are tyrannical. It wasnt just the english. Anyway what makes anyone think that just because someones English they agree with what happened?I don't.Lets face it english/Irish or other the poor were treated like poo by who ever ruled. If you go back far enough its not the enlish you should be aiming at but the French or the Romans etc! Its history, hate of people long dead is pointless and doesnt help now but prolongs peoples suffering
two lovers who is parted. But not by death, because the song gives a little feeling of hope.. She sings out her longing for her man, but most of all, she sings out her hope to see him again...
Used this song for my wedding ceremony in the church. It was stunning!! The echoes made it sound twice as haunting. It's só beautiful. Didn't know the meaning of the lyrics back then, but now that I've read the translation, it is rather appropiate for a wedding.
Imtheochaidh soir is siar A dtainig ariamh An ghealach is an ghrian Fol lol the doh fol the day Fol the day fol the day Imtheochaidh an ghealach's an ghrian An Daoine og is a chail 'na dhiadh Fol lol the doh fol the day Fol the day fol the day Fol lol the doh fol the day Fol the day fol the day Imtheochaidh a dtainig ariamh an duine og is a chail ne dhiadh Fol lol the doh fol the day Fol the day fol the day
As far as i know its just traditional Irish mouth music 'filler' vocals (Puirt a beul) similar to American jazz 'scat-singing'. An rhythmic equivalent in english music would be singing 'Rum-te-tum-te-diddle-de-dum' or something similar in between verses.
I had no idea of what this song meant...but had always loved the beautiful haunting music so much that I walked down the aisle to it - which opened our pagan handfasting wedding ceremony.
Belfast in the 80's was pretty bad. I had family split and torn badly apart over the fighting. It's very good that it's over and I hope to Christ that it stays that way. This song is beautiful. When they were blowing forty shades of shite out of each other on the streets, this came up. Beautiful always.
Growing up in Glasgow wasn't quite the same as growing up around Belfast in the 80's...not many armed gate check points to go through in Glasgow town centre when you're doing your xmas shopping. (ie none)

Like for example "the devils own" brad pitt sucks and couldn't pull off a belfast accent even if his life were to depend on it, and also the theme of that film was really outdated...
Well since the topic people are on about is films, then Ill input my Opinion...
First off, there was a similar film which was early 1990s called "Circle Of Deciet" Which was about an x- SAS agent that is sent to infiltrate the provos in belfast.
Well, for those of you who have not seen it, I will not give away the plot, But I do give the film Credit because it is one of a very select few, that use an Original Rebel Song at the end...{on the one road}.
