This ad was actually parodied in one sketch on an episode of "Mystery Science Theater 3000", although I can't remember which one. I just know it was during the Joel "Robinson" Hodgson days.
the last time I saw The Little Mermaid (released by Walt Disney Pictures) in 1989, the Space Candy General Cinema Policy Trailer is shown, followed by the GCC Clouds "Feature Presentation" Policy Trailer, the 1985 Walt Disney Pictures logo and start of the film.
It would really be frightening if this were happening in front of your own eyes and not on a movie theater screen. Your ears hearing it in Dolby 5.1 Surround for real, that would be unsettling.
Thanks for uploading this!! I have a copy on 35mm film that is is fair condition, I use it for sound tests. I was told that the "cloud" background took a film crew sitting on a beach in Hawaii a week to film...I wonder why, lol.
I figure the Space Candy would have started about 1981, which means it would have preceded The Great Muppet Caper, The Dark Crystal and The Muppets Take Manhattan. I believe it might have paired with the 1980 Feature Presentation bumper at the time of its launch. Another policy trailer launched in 1986 without visuals. It can be viewed in jonrev's General Cinema compilation after Space Candy.
@Fragglevision I don't think the Space Candy bumper was used until 1986 so The Great Muppet Caper, Heidi's Song and the 1983 reissue of The Sword in the Stone along with the 1984 reissue of Pinocchio would have likely used either the 1975 General Cinema policy bumper or another policy bumper from the early 80's that is not as popular as the space candy bumper.
Wow this brings back memories! Always funny when the audience applauded at the soda cup going into the trash can. GCC and Mann were the premiere theaters in LA back in the day. Thanks for posting this!
@Kitsuneranger I wouldn't say that. Two of the chains where I live (Wehrenberg and Warren) serve Pepsi. Goodrich also served Pepsi when they owned theatres in my area.
I remember they had a count the candy contest with this trailer when it first aired. There was a money prize and I remember everyone trying to count that candy but it wasnt easy.
Yes indeed, ILM did this. There was a contest when it was first launched and it included a voice over that stated it was made by ILM and there was a contest to count the amount of popcorn that appears. I think this is still better looking than what is out there today for other chains. It looks polished.
Wow, this is a blast from the past! I definitely remember this intro. There were two GCC theaters in my area when I was growing up: Fashion Island Cinema in Foster City and Hillsdale Cinema in San Mateo, CA. Sadly, both of them closed down by the mid-late 90s.
I Went to General Cinema back in 1994 and saw Toy Story and another movie cant remember the movie long live GCC 1935-2002. I Would Have Loved To Have Worked For General Cinema.
I remember the MST3K guys lampooned this General Cinema intro during their Comedy Central episodes. They opened their "external cambot feed" and there was a bunch of movie garbage floating on strings. Joel and the bots then proceeded to perform the General Cinema Space Candy theme a Capella. It was stupid, but funny.
I believe I saw this when I saw Aladdin back in late 1992. When I passed by that General Cinema theater at the mall, it was now an AMC. Long Live GCC.
Which was rereleased in 1992 so it still used the 1986 General Cinema logo. Disney used to reissue their films a lot for fear that a video release may kill off future theatrical revenues.
I remember they had a contest to see who could come close to the actual pieces of popcorn in this bumper. I think the winner got lifetime passes to GCC. I doubt if AMC would honor that today.
I was told that the clouds at the mid point was filmed by a crew who spent six days on a beach in Hawaii to get that shot..what a rough gig that must have been... :)
"cobra", yes..."top gun" i din't see until the fall...it was at our plitt theater before moving to a general cinema in october '86....."the delta force" came out around late february/early march '86 at the plitt cinema...i din't see that until it came out on vhs....
Ah, memories. I remember seeing this in theaters many times in my childhood, from the whimsy "concessions available, toss your drink when done, no smoking" policy trailer to the "Feature Presentation" trailer with the cloudy sky fading to space background with the familiar majestic synthesized fanfare. These bring back memories...
Thanks, I just suspected you were Brad because anyone else who posts this snipe usually gets pulled, but yours remains. Also one of your favorites is what Brad shot a link to on his site.
I used to work at a General Cinema theater. I was working there when they first started using this trailer. Dgontar was right, it was around 1986, although they may have continued using it through the early 90's. When they first started using this trailer, they had a contest to guess the number of pieces of candy. You had to fill out a card and drop it in a box. I forget what the prize was.
The last time I ever saw this logo in a theatre was on Dec 31, 1993. I've been looking for a decent mpeg of it online for years, but still havent found one.
