  • i didnt know some of this line was restored, are there plans to make any of the old line into a heritage railway?

  • @russianpostman This isn't actually the 'real' Somerset and Dorset: it is in fact the old GWR's Minehead branch, it was a gala event to celebrate 40 years since the closure of the S&D. The real Somerset and Dorset is however being restored at Midsomer Norton.

  • @Y55MAC thanks. Yes, it would be super if some of that line was restored.

  • Did they even restore the switch towers and boxes and semaphores?

  • The West Somerset Railway is the Minehead Branchline that was abandoned by British Rail is the early 70's. It was only out of use for a few years before reopening in stages. Almost everything has been rebuilt as the line had been allowed to rot by BR for years before finally closure.

  • So this looks pretty much as it was when it was abandoned now, wow, recreating a railway is a great thing! Looks like a lot of people like it, we have the Prairie Dog Central Railway in Manitoba,Canada

  • Was this line once abandoned? Is this the same one that went to Evercreech Junction??

  • This is the West Somerset Railways (Bishops Lydeard - Minehead) recreation of the old Somerset and Dorset line, which ran through Evercreech Junction. The S&DJR (Bath Green Park - Evercreech Junc - Bournemouth West) was closed by British Railways in March 1966.
