@htsk91 The answer can be confusing, but basically no. The XL2 shoots in Standard Definition, but it is the perfection of SD. The quality is great and translates to 720p on YouTube. For example, most of my films are 720p on YouTube despite being shot in SD. On YouTube, the "HD" option isn't really correct.
@MichaelSirois this was in 2007, so was there any upgrade from SD to HD? Cause if it shoots in Standard then im not too sure its worth $2,000+.... But it looks sick
I wouldn't say that it resembles a "normal" camera, whatever normal is, but it definitely is nowhere near it's full potential. I was still learning about the XL-2 when I used this, and in particular the white balance is what made some of this video appear as lower quality. Plus this was done in July of 2007.
Great footage considering you're just getting used to it. The XL2 is a beautiful piece of kit and is well worth thoroughly examining. Broadcast material can be achieved with the right set up but you must read up first and take as much advice as you can, lighting is critical especially with Canon Cameras and you really need 150 to 200 lux to keep out of the 'grain zone'. Look forward to seeing more from you in future, N422 :-)
When I made this three years ago I was still getting used to the XL-2, and this video in particular had a problem with white balance (since I didn't know how to do that at the time). Still, even in the hands of an amateur the XL-2 still manages to look nice.
I've been looking to buy one but I haven't decided on the best place to buy it yet since it seems the prices seeme to be fairly different depending on where you purchase them.
^I bought mine off of B&H Photo. pretty good price, excellent service. don't buy it if it is under 2000 because if it is then it's a scam. and the song is "6 Underground" by Sneaker Pimps
definately man... you know hd is always nice but its so much more expensive... plus not all people have hddvd players so if your planning on trying to make as uncompressed as you wont find much... so go xl2.... with some smart lighting you will have beautiful shots.
Can this record HD? cause non of the vids on youtube are hd. the highest ive seen is 480p

Most of it looks too video like. You should be able to do better stuff with the XL2. Colors are off.

Do you use CP on the camera? You should, you can adjust coring, setup level, master pedestal, color phase etc etc etc. Very cool to play with.

I use CP now, but at the time I had no idea of that feature. It's an awesome feature, though.

Yea i was really skeptical of the ones that are selling them for 1,000$
So would you recommend this for a independant filmer?

I agree. Not to mention you need a killer computer to edit HD.

sometimes you can get good deals on ebay, but be careful, B&H is a great place to get it, very reasonable price and very reliable.
