I had a very weird dream about that song. I was in some waterpark, near closing at 9PM and I saw a few Disney Characters there. I saw a group of musicians and singers performing a minor key version of the song with different lyrics, which made Minnie Mouse cry. They were all wearing red (must be a red memorial). Minnie's eyes were all strange, but red from crying. Daisy Duck's eyes were red too. When the former was sobbing and shaking her head, I woke up.

I think it's more about setting up the kind of contrast found in the later verses, because a lot of the people who would know all the words to one song would be scornful of the kind of people who would know all the words to the other and vice versa.

He says "I know the words to 'De Colores' and I'm proud to be an American"...in other words, he means that he knows a traditional Mexican folkloric song and is still an American"...in still other words, it's kind of like how as an American of Italian heritage, I can like "funniculi, funnicula" for, among other things, my family's personal history, and still be an American. Again, being American does not mean you can't have more to your identity.
