Apparently James Horner was in a bit of a rut because he reused the main movement in "The Land Before Time" a year later in 1988. Still love Horner though.
Apparently James Horner was in a bit of a rut because he reused the main movement in "The Land Before Time" a year later in 1988. Still love Horner though.
@ALL. Maybe if you watched films other than sci-fi and action, you would realize that film has not gone anywhere. Eg. Black Swan, True Grit, Kings Speech, the Fighter, all amazing movies. I agree that CG has diluted the craft of some movie genres, but just don't watch them. Just like how I don't listen to the radio and expect to hear the Beatles. Times have change and so must we to find the true art of film. 'Block-Buster' movies are for the mass audience and are obviously going to be lame.
@bghann Don't buy that at all. I watch movies from every genre, I'm a movie lover and have studied every decade. Those movies you mentioned were big disappointments, they were well made granted but simple-minded and totally lacking in soul which seems to be a deliberate agenda now. Great movie making is gone, you do get the odd good 1 every few years but anyone who thinks there is plenty of great movies being made every year is either deluded or completely barinwashed by mass media propaganda.
@euphfellowship Perhaps it had something to do with the appreciation certain writers and film makers had for some of these great stage actors LIke Cronyn and Tandy and wanted to create vehicles for them. Also, since Hollywood hadn't yet totally learned the under 25 crowd was the most exploitable it was still making movies that might appeal to all age demographics. I remember as a kid seeing E.T. in the theater with my grandma and there were all age groups present. Haven't seen THAT in forever.
The reason why the 80's is much better when it comes to film making is because everything was new and unexploited. Today, technology has come a long long way that film makers cannot think of something new aside from 3D animations which replaces human actors. In the past, imagination and creativity comes to work in miniaturization like what Universal Studios used to do. Now, all we have is computer manipulated ideas...
@mannydeguzmanjartist 0_o computer manipulated ideas? i just say that creativity is dead nowadays, MAYBE because computer graphic sells better, it's like appliance, cars, videogames and people too, nowadays a new thing is just the same thing with a fairly later expiration date and a new color scheme
i agree, the eighties were cool for the movies and other things
@mannydeguzmanjartist Its not that technology makes movies "bad" the main reason that movies nowdays suck so much is because directors think that they can compensate bad story telling with good special effects. In the 80's directors knew how to compensate for that, they balanced good a storyline, great acting and good special effects. A good example of that is James Cameron and the way he produced Avatar. ^^; Well... that's my opinion anyways.
I'd have to say that traditional hand crafted sets and unexploited real human actors are the best. These are real Intellectual Properties of Fine Arts and traditional artists. Real puppets like that of Jimmy Henson's is better than today's 3D animation. Traditional Cartoons by Hannah Barbera and original Disney's hand crafted ideas (frames by frame hand drawn) are way better than Pixar's 3D animation. Hydraulic sets/ machines of Universal Studios like that of Superman is by far the best.
@mannydeguzmanjartist I agree that some hand drawn cartoons are far better than what we get today, people got lazy. Disney lost it's purpose, it dosen't compare nowadays. The special effects back then aren't better than todays, that's a very deluded idea, but a great movie is not about special effects. And Pixar brought amazing movies, they are nearly flawless, which is impressive by today's standards, tell me Toy Story didn't charm, animation, the characters, the music, the plot.
@mannydeguzmanjartist You're 100% right. I'd like to think I'm still young but I've given up on today's 'escapist' movies. 3D & CGI looks awful, it's flat and actually 1D. It's sad to see people here saying the FX now is better, they must be soulless. Some 'cool' 'dude' sitting at a high powered PC punching in numbers will never equal the craftmanship of 80's movies. Even the music now in movies is cheap & shooting Digitally is another problem..the list is endless. Movie magic is gone forever.
Because as a traditional artist, I still find the works of Renoir, Rembrandt, Botticelli, Da Vinci, and other Masters as true works of arts, just like old Hanna Barbera better than Pixar, LoL! These are priceless jewel that has not been exploited overtime, and has been authenticated and followed for a decades!
@n987 I agree 100%. Look at Sanctum, movie used same technology as Avatar yet everything else besides the special effects are just incredibly bad but it still made millions. They focus so much on special effects becasue it's much easier than to be creative. That's why such a high percentage of the movies that come out, are remakes of classics with better special effects that don't even come close to the quality of the original versions. It's sad, hollywood blows.
I saw this at about 7, hadn't thought about it in ages. Then a few weeks ago I had a dream that featured the little UFOs from this movie, now I found it for sale reissued on DVD! LOL
@BardAlgol Same thing happened to me man, guess it stuck in my subconscious somehow. had a dream about it and started asking everyone till today somebody told me the title
my parents says that I allways cried when they didnt show me this film once per month. This was my favorite in my childhood and is number 33 in my personal top 100 favorite and good movies of all time!
Nothing what Hollywood did today can compare with the eighties!
can someone tell me the name of the song playing in this? I think it might be from Land Before Time but I'm not sure and it's starting to drive me nuts! I'd appreciate it if someone can tell me what it's from!
@Saranm25 hey i thought the same, but the soundtrack to this film is by James Horner, the same guy who composed Land Before Time. This track sounds very similar to one piece in LBT!!
I wasn't even alive for the 80s but why do you think my generation is trying to get back in touch with it. Whatever happened to this sort of skill and imagination?
@shallwethen I wish you were right but I see no signs of it. Look at the views a 'PG' porno video from katy perry or gaga gets here on utube, it's sad. Look at the trash at the box office that is breaking records now... 1D Xbox movies like Avatar & witless smut like The Hangover. No, i don't think this generation dream, they want an 'omg' fix & to be moved below the waist. Hollywood knows this, silly parents don't give a fuck. Nice to know you have a soul ( maybe ) but the rot set in long ago.
@robhere1982 Isn't that what this movie is all about? The world was never such a grand place that chaos and upset didn't exist. It's always been there, in one light or another. So who are you going to be?
This was one of my favorite movies when I was little. I always thought (And still do) the robots were cute, and I remember wanting one of my own. xD Nostalgia is wonderful. :)

@kramnrublaw Thanks, I'll look those up and force YouTube to shut them down by sending them cease and desist letters - I own the copyright to those films. Do you know how difficult it is to think of all the films that are infringed here?
