If you think that depriving a dog a bite of food for less then a minute is "torture" then you must have no idea that dogs not only like to be challenged mentally but they benefit greatly by being challenged. The bottom line is that the dog got the treat for behaving properly and was not harmed in any way whatsoever. I'm sure he is as happy as a clam

The dog doesn't do maths. When the other judges ask the dog a question he still has to look at the owner for a signal to stop tapping. There was one question when the dog started tapping before the judge even finished asking it, because the dog doesn't need to know the question, its owner tells it when to stop.

The judge was right - in tricks like these the animals pick up on incredibly subtle signals from their owner, even though most of the time the owner doesn't even realise that they're making them. This was first discovered in the early 20th century with a man and his performing horse - the horse could be asked literally any math question and, as long as his owner knew the answer, would get it right because the owner would make an involuntary facial gesture when the horse reached the right number.

@mubutukinkeke I agree, I was unable to see the owner's face and dogs face at the same time when the correct answer was reached. Therefore, I believe that there may have be a type of gesture we didn't see. I do believe that an animal can learn basic math (a chimpanzee for instance can spell and add, so it's not unfeasible that a dog may be able to with the right training).

I know Jack Russell's are smart but I'm not convinced that maggie can do maths. We never actually see exactly what the trainer is doing. I wouldn't be surprised if she is, either deliberately or unconsciously, giving the dog very subtle signals through body language. I reckon she blinks or does a slight nod when the dog hits the right number.
