  • I love how Miyashiro plays Lynn Nicholson's solo.... is there anyone who played it liked Nicholson as well that could share? I love it.

  • @michaelgalea I believe Doc Severinsen and Wayne Bergeron can play it like this too. An of course maynard can.

  • I like the original better but this is pretty awesome. :D

  • @HEROxSabre Can't beat the original :D It's Maynard!! And the other soloists as well... Lol. They're all amazing.

  • @Iamthatguysbrother so true.

  • sorry for the french but...

    fucking fantastic

  • Holy Cow - never heard of this Eric cat but wow.

  • i love the drummers "double stand" very genius!!!

  • Comment removed

  • 2:55 - 3:08 pwns

  • @hollow5150 Im sayin the A above double C is a triple A... Double A is below double C

  • @andrewoc10 so would u call the a between double g and double b a high a? What's the a above the staff then? It's definetly a triple a or a super a is another name for it...

  • @dcouncill

Wait hold on. Wat wuld you call the G right below that A? That G wuld have to be a triple G then if that A was a triple. Because there is a G below the staff (first octave) the one in the staff (second octave). The one below, the one in the staff, and the one above is not difficult so it cant be a triple A.

  • i have been trying to find out the other various artists since i heard maynard ferguson's version in the 80s.

  • 3:38 sounds better on bari sax

  • My Favourite moments from this video are from about 1:20 to 1:35. Eric is killin the double A and then the drummer plays an amazing double kick fill! I've watched those 15 seconds millions of times!!!

  • Actually it's just a high A, double A would be over double C.

  • I've known it to be double A, kinda sounds retarded to call the A above double C a double A because it starts the third octave above the staff.... it makes more sense to call it in correspondence to the octave its in. thats my opinion

  • sorry, cov01crew, but the bari sax solo was excellent. you may need to learn the chords yourself before you try to put another player down. he hit every change nicely. =)

  • I listened to this again. And I must say upon rehearing I was wrong and you are right. The Bari sax solo was very nice. I don't know what I was hearing before. Bad headphones last time? Wax in ears?

My bad. I retract my comment about the bari sax solo. Thank you for the admonition.

  • I think the solo is sometimes not the best... But not bad, i prefer MF version.

  • honestly i kinda like this better than MF's version.

  • Band sounds great in ensemble, soloists except for Eric M on trumpet were a bit weak. Bari sax improv in particular needed to follow the chords better.

Trombone and then trumpet muffed the bridge starting at 3:40.

On the whole, though, very nice. Eric M is a monster.

  • it's a practice session, after all. and yes, Eric Miyashiro is a beast. but no other version can beat MF's recording.

  • Ray Brinker on drums?

  • ah, it was a rehearsal... My bad, forget I said anything about the last note, I thought it was a performance at a college or something, I guess that's what I get for not reading the description... lol

  • This stands as testimony that any good band, can sound GREAT, if recorded properly.

Coming out of my crummy computer speakers, they sound fantastic. Maybe it's that the band is really great, okay. But they sound better than the recording done of the same tune by the Man himself at a nightclub. No criticism, just pointing out that the room, recording and what gets captured and reproduced on the "listening end" means everything. What do you think? Don't miss the point, ya little dweeb.

  • wonderful

  • yeah, i didnt like that last note, the one on the album they recored was much better than that. it was ok, but he picks a better note that harmonizes much better (i think the octave) as the stinger.

  • great stuff! it's cool to see behind the scenes type of playing like this. i don't think he had any problems with the last note...it seems more like he is just playing it half-heartedly and cuts it short to do the conducting...he obviously doesn't play like that in performances. he is a true power on the instrument...would love to see him live some time.

  • i can't complain

eric is a hell of a trumpet player. he's the lead soloist he gets the freedom to play it how he wants to play

  • phenominal.

The only complaints i have are about not holding notes out full length on the solo, AND, the last note. Find another note in the chord that sounds nice if you can't play it strong and without a squeaky tone, because you know.... everyone is going to be comparing it to my name sake's version.

    Over all, i loved it.

and I ESPECIALLY loved the Bari Sax solo. That was frickin awesome.

  • TrumpetDan714

    Congratulations

    Awesome

    Rate 10

    Huges.

  • Yes.

  • is that englebright on lead?

  • the trumpet player is a beast!!!!!

  • Gorgeous.

  • hm...his always doing a trill or trimolo and that trimolo sounds good heheh... practice like he does and you can do it to...

  • on average trumpeters use 50 lbs of pressure over an 5cm area of lip.

    -scientific american

  • My schools A Band Jazz ensemble played this with our instructors husband

  • im astonished thats absolutely great

  • Wow! True test of a pro band is that they sound awesome even through a crappy camcorder mike. Eric's been doing it for over 25 years like this. Amazing power.

  • This is awesome even though it is only a rehearsel.

But the lead trumpet of John Pendenza's band is better than this. See also the version of John Pendenza's band of MacArthur Park.

I really loce this song. This was my piece on organ when we had our recital.

  • You got to crazy..go take a look at Eric's real performance on this. Although Pendenza is a decent trumpet player, he is not in the same league as Eric and many others (ie. Watkins, Severinson)

  • best i ever heard

  • Yep...too clean. Needs some dirt and skank from Eric.

  • Hmmmm, a little sloppy with a few of the run up notes too.

  • DAMN!!!!

  • good version

  • I think this is a great performance from eric but I actually think he plays TOO clean. Part of what made maynard great was his ability to play a little rough but still sound amazing. great none the less!

  • i dont know what your talking about i think he's unbelievable

  • Pretty Dreary - Does anyone really want to be there.

    Awesome Trumpet Lead

  • It's a rehearsal and he adjusted his tuning. In the show it is normally spot on and Maynard didn't play with perfect intonation on every note infact nobody does. They may adjust the note when playing but nobody hits the initial note in tune everytime.

  • I love big bands like this. I used to play the cornet, but gave up. It's actually in its case right beside my bed now, but my cheeks don't have the strength anymore. Plus, big props to the drummer.

  • Oh my goodness. VERY nice!

  • Great Video!

Look at my father's "Sepp Zink - Piano Medley (Live, Final Countown)"! The last song is "MacArthur Park"!

  • this guy's a freaking beast!!

  • This is some of the best brass I've ever heard and a stirling performance from Eric!

  • These guys are tight! sax solo is beautiful and not to mention Eric, great clip of one of my favorite songs

  • Oh wow, that is a VERY nice sax bit. The great tones straight after from the brass is also fantastic!

  • sick

  • Our highschool jazz band director was so addicted to these guyz,

our concerts were Ferguson biased. But then, all in his class apprieciated this style and we've kept the apprieciation to this day. wherever we go in life (and probably thereafter) we'll know eachother by the 'Ferguson Rifts' in our music style.

  • it's a guy.. eric miyashiro

  • The one playing the trumpet maybe a man with long hair and not a lady. He or she plays well. well done.

  • I love this guy, especially when he was with Buddy Rich.

  • eric miyashiro's da bomb

  • pubey clubey

some1 left my teef out in the rain

  • Eric Miyashiro

  • Who is on lead trumpet?

  • Anyone else realize that drummer is a beast? Aroun 1:30, that double bass fill is just perfect...

  • The big guys got a beautiful tone.

  • pierdes el tempo

  • He's a man, his name is Eric Miyashiro

  • Thanks man. He's amazing. I found this out on other sights. There's a web sight about him. The long hair threw me. Like to hear him in person.

  • What's the girls name?

  • The fat girls got some chops.

  • the fat girl is one of the best leads around.

  • Yea, jonskyeagle, that fat girl's got super chops......if she had balls, her name would be Eric (*_~)

  • really really good

  • Amazing playing!

  • Amazing range, tone and vibrato. Terrific video and thanks for posting!

  • omg!!!!

  • the sax player hunched over in the front is really distracting, lol. awesome though!

  • He reminds me of Bergeron in a way. He's got great shakes and an unbelievably clear high range.

  • Amazing. That drummers really tight.

  • WOW amzing trumpet dude!

  • oh my bad Eric you are really good i should say an amazing player i like your sound how did you get that range??

  • Right On Eric...Represent!!!! all the Way from Honolulu Hawaii, by the way trumpetaphone15, his name is Eric Miyashiro. I believe he lives in Japan now ...if you read this Eric ( go TIGERS!)

  • hey main trumpet guy if you are anywere near NJ come out to The 2006 brass champion of DCA the bushwackers it would be great to meet you and to play with you im also a trumpet player

  • RIP MF... Classic Chart!

  • Eric has a personal horn but it's not really like a Bobby shew. It's a large bore (not step bore like Bobby's horn) and has a lighter bell with a bigger flare. There are other differences those are the big ones. It's a nice playing horn made by the Yamaha custom shop in Japan. Eric sure sounds amazing on it!

  • Good eye about the horn. He plays a custom Yamaha that is similar to the Bobby Shew model. I don't remember the exact model number. Maybe an 8345?

  • Bari saxist is Denis DeBlasio.

  • Long live Maynard's music!

  • what big band is this, what city I mean. I'm assuming it was shot in the U.S.

  • Anyone know who the bari saxist is?

  • It's Denis DiBlasio

  • DiBlasio is the coolest. does anyone live near Rowan University? that's where he teaches, or at least the last time i heard he did. i talked to him with a bunch of flute players about how he hums when he does flute. humming is fun and easy :)

  • nice!

  • Can anyone tell what kind of horn he's using? Looks like a Yamaha Bobby Shew to me...

  • its all good.

  • sorry i was so anal 'bout it :)

  • lighten up...hes just having fun reading a chart and paying tribute to a guy who has influenced him in his career...judging by maynard and the crowd’s reaction after the concert, he was more than pleased by the way the song was represented. I shall be more reserved with my description next time.

  • if he's playing maynard.... he's not doing a very good job....

eric's a great player... but to say he's playing a role as maynard?....

  • My guess would be because he's playing Maynard's part in the arrangement that Maynard's band played...at a tribute to Maynard...which was attended by Maynard. Of course, being SUCH a fan that you picked the name that you did, you would know this.

  • you're one to talk...you went and decided to put maynard in your name, lol

  • yay asian power!

  • Outstanding.

  • AWESOME

  • hey do you have any more eric miyashiro vids?

  • ill see what I can dig up

  • Eric Miyashiro KICKS ASS!!!!!
