Excellent, This is song is so devilishly mischievous, I can see it as a great concept in a play set between the devil and a man pledging his soul in return for the love of his life. It's amazing how music tells a story without words.
I don't agree. He sometimes looses the tempo, he's not in time. Just because he wants all the notes to be there. If you listen to Prokofiev's version, all the stuff comes in time, it grooves.
Richter for me is by far the best Prokofiev interpreter of all time. No wonder Prokofiev dedicated works to him and had him premier so many of them too. It is crisp, clear, percussive, tender/lyrical when need be, demonic, rhythmical, precise, etc. You name it - any other superlative certainly applies to Richter playing Prokofiev! Right on the same level as Gould playing Bach.
richter uses alll his body to play. this gives him incredible power. its the only one who went so far concerning using weight of his arm upper body and whole body. the transmisson of weight is perfect. his secret and success....
Now, how did Prokofiev hear music like this in his mind? Upon hearing it the first time, this piece sounded like a bunch of random notes that made interesting melodies!
It´s wonderful, surely, but I invite you all to listen the performance of Antonietta Rudge (1885-1974).It´s the most brilliant I´ve seen. She is this woman I posted in video. I would like to know your opinion. Thanks.
@AfroPoli That is true, I am surprised that it has become famous. He has been possessed. Only this way he could play this song, It was a deal between Richter and the devil. The devil was used in this kind of deals with pianists back then...
I have a vinyl recording of this piece, but i don`t remember it being this exciting.....I shall dig it out and try to find something to play it on......
ha! I just got around to listening to Prokofiev himself play this on theoshow2's channel. What a difference ;)
I'm always fascinated when I hear interpretations that are "better" than the music as it is itself written....that make you believe that even the composer wasn't aware of what was really contained in what he created.
Grazie
This is the best recording of Prokofiev's work. Extremely fast and you can feel the diabolical suggestion going through you. faustinliszt is right. :D
The closest meaning I could find in English for the Russian word "наваждение" would be "delusion" or "nightmare". Something like "persisting nightmare"...
It is very, very well played. I still prefer Moiseiwitsch's interpretation, but cannot deny that Richter's is a far more infernal vision of the piece.
Thanks for sharing! I've been searching for this for so long since I first heard this edition in Italy version of "The Enigma". Best rendition of this work!(Yes, without "one of"). Perfect balance and tense, I like it more that Prokofiev's own recording. Thanks again for sharing!

I think the Soviet authorities just left out the "Diabolique" bit, since it was incompatible with the official atheist ideology. It might be permissable in a composer like Scriabin, whom everyone knew to be a madman anyway, but not in a true Soviet atheist composer like Prokofiev!
