However, in Byzantium and accoding to the Greek orthodox faith (today still) a Greek is he who is Greek Orthodox. This are not my opinions, this is how the empire was run for 1000 years. Then during the split of Ottoman empire, the same, Christians where kicked out of Turkey, Muslims kicked out of Greece, and so it goes on for the entire span of history.
