After the 1929 crash the Glass-Steagall act was put in place restricting bank from gambling with other peoples money. Wall Street managed very successfully to buy Republicans like Phil Gramm to abolish this principle in 1999. Deregulation of derivatives in 2000 paved the way for the current crisis!

In fact, while this video points out some of the absurdities of this fucked up downward spiral [I must admit I'm not familiar with the Fed's authority in detail, so I can't really tell how accurate that part is], it doesn't even begin to criticize the capitalist system surrounding this particular banks-fed-gov't axis.

@Tanicha66 and to clarify how little you know about American history and how wrong this use of Jefferson quote are, I will remind you that America did in fact have a central bank while Jefferson was President and that bank was in fact set up as a private bank just like The Federal Reserve Bank is today. The bank was proposed by Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury under President George Washington.

You see a private central bank wasn't really so bad to them... right..
