Not at that complicated, these kids were just a product of their generation. There was such a massive change across America from 1955 to 1965, the kids (most of them) went along for the ride. Suddenly, drugs were all over the place, the government may of even had a hand in that. Large, open air rock concerts, and of course, the civil rights movement and Nam. Some believed in what they were doing, again, most just went along for the ride. You rarely saw middle-aged hippies, youth culture!

In fact, I think I saw an ad in the New York Times taken out by a coalition of Vietnamese farming peasants talking about how they miss our bombs and wish we would come back.
