Yesterday I was spearfishing in my country P.R. I'm not a great apneist so I was spearfishing like 30' deep and I speared a big fat lionfish. I killed him with my knife and when putting it in my bag I get stung in the middle finger of the left hand. I keep on spearfishing but my hand swelled and the pain was strong like the next 4 hours. Then the hand get like numb and today I have no pain but the hand is swelled. I don’t felt vomiting desires nor dizziness nothing except pain and swelling.
You people are absolutely clueless. One of the reasons they have lionfish hunting (it's an actual course offered by PADI) is because they're invasive and extremely agressive towards other fish. They kill off the fish that maintain coral reefs which will eventually kill the reef. They kill off fish that eats seaweed which eventually overgrows and causes damage. Yes Nhamms, they ARE bad for sealife. Idiots... hope your thumb healed good man, dont listen to these retards.
@lros1979 and because i see 80% of the people commenting are morons and wont read it up. Lionfish are NOT indigenous to almost everywhere they are. They're from japan/china area and were accidentally spread by humans. We're just trying to clean up. Before commenting, go read the lionfish article on wiki then feel free to pitch in an opinion.
@lros1979 So lionfish are overpopulated because of human intervention and carelessness, and the ethical solution in your mind is for humans to intervene by killing the lionfish? There has to be another way. Hunting programs never work. Humans need to start looking at themselves for the cause of ecosystem imbalance, not killing other animals who were doing fine before humans came along.
@arockmcgrizzle It's not about ethical, it's about what works. If we dont do this the reprecussions will be beyond disasterous. And no i'm not over-exagerating. Lionfish in an area kill off coral. Why dont you go and do some research at the role that coral plays in earths eco-system and you'll see why this is something that needs to be done. Also, saying "there has to be another way" doesn't magically make another way appear.
@H3ARTL3SSF0X They're actually an invasive species and many wildlife organizations encourage people to kill as many as possible, and they are good eating too.
Its not only making it safer for divers, but safer for the overall well-being of the ecosystem.
So if your so scared of the ocean and the venomous species that inhabit it, why don't you go dive in a pool?

@iamunderyourbed97i Get a clue and do some research before commenting on something. This dude paid the price for other people's ignorance. People created the problem and now other people are trying to fix it.
@iamunderyourbed97i hey hey hey.....at least they are trying to help at least lower the danger of diving. Im only 13 and Im hoping to be able to go diving in the great barrier reef when i get older....I dont want to be in a lot of danger just becuz of a lionfish....
I dont get this ,, "invasive species" crap ... who has determined this bullshit?? They come from some sea off this world?? Species move around as they need to .. the sea belongs to them ...
@guahould yes species migrate but invasive species are from when people transport a species that end up dominating the native species. such as cuban tree frogs. they are invasive since people brought it from another country to florida. cuban tree frogs ended up starting to eat all other plants and insects and have no other predators.
wow niiiiiiiiice good job sooo really they r killing these fish for the good of humans or wat? or y? but wow nice to show the aftermath i guess it is worse than a bee sting jjejejeejeje well man hope all goes well n y r they killing them?
@PLASTICPOPCORN4 The rate of reproduction in the Caribbean where they are an invasive species (i.e introduced by accident) has been monthly. Their normal rate of reproduction in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, where they are controlled by natural predators, is yearly. They each have thousands of eggs. The math is simple.
@goose003 I would like to see a good reasonable response to that question myself.. no doubt they are likely killing them due to getting stung whilst invading the sea on some other kind of killing spree.... Just like the rich people having deer culled from the forest because they eat their shrubs... Thats fucking people for ya !!!!
@guahould The Lionfish was introduced into the Caribbean over 10 years ago. There are many theories as to how, look them up. The most likely is that they were kept as pets, when keepers realized that they would consume all of their $ in tropical fish, they released them. This now has caused havoc to the coral reefs due to the fact they have no natural predator, they flourish, consuming juvenile fish that eat algae off the reefs allowing the coral to grow. With no juvenile fish, there is no reef.
@guahould people released them there, they don't belong there... It wouldn't be such a bad thing, if they didn't eat fucking everything else that was out there. But yes... end result people ruined it. Oh and you mean wildlife management? Yes its a good thing...
Ah yes the Lionfish, best known as the total douche nozzle of the sea.
