@ibwilliamsi - I am a singer myself. I love Ella's version. She was the best. I do feel, however, that George Tunnel's vocal on the Savitt recording is also awesome. Some of the band vocalists, at the time, did seem to lack vocal quality, or rhythm or both. He seemed to possess both. I have copies of all the vocals he did with this band and I can't recall one of his renditions that was anything but good.
Thank you so much for listening and so much for the post.
@kentherockinman - Thank you for the comment and I agree with you 100%. I love Casa Loma but their version lacks the life of the Savitt recording. Speaking of Casa Loma I was thinking of posting the Victor version of "Casa Loma Stomp". Of the several versions of that song they waxed, I like that one the best. The tempo is a bit brighter and the Victor recording equipment seems superior during that time period.
We used to play an arrangement of this song with my rehearsal big band here in Hong Kong, love that shuffle., and Bob Bon a good underrated big band vocalist.
@CCJazzmen2 Wow, thanks for your comment. There are so many other tunes by Savitt that I love as well, "It's a Wonderful World", "Rose of the Rio Grande", Vol Vistu Gaily Star". All have that shuffle and excellent Bon Bon vocals. I agree with you completely that he was underrated. No pun intended, but why did you take 720 out of the books? Thanks again.
one of our great favorites-thanks so much

I like Ella's version, but I'm a singer.

The original and best. The Glen Gray Casa Loma version may get raves, but this was the inspiration for that.
