  • I always like it when world famous drummers click their sticks together going round the toms like Jojo did here - it reminds me that they're only human and we can be as good as them if we really try!

  • been familiar with JoJo for about 2 years, got his DVD etc. 2 years later, because of his influence I am 10X the drummer I was. If you want to be a great drummer you have to know how to handle the sticks and JoJo is the fucking best there is, any style. Prove me wrong :-)

  • why did he have to stop that was so enjoyable to listen to and watch

  • gotta love his face at the end :D

  • I love listening to drummers who can play so musically and not just rythmically

  • 0:41 is LOL

  • seems to be so esay when Jojo plays ... !!!!

  • it's is truly amazing what he can do with a 4 peice kit

  • I want his shirt!

  • A true legend jamming out. It cracks me up how much some analyze what a great drummer like this is doing just to noodle around. Even he isn't scrutinizing what he does as much as those who watch. And yeah, never once out of time. Epic fail? Yes, you saying he got off time, was a epic comment fail. You need more lessons. If you want proof, get out your metronome, which I'm sure you own, being that you are a drummer, right?

  • What Sabian big ride cymbal is that? Sounds tremendous! Of course so does JoJo!

  • @pbldrum its his signature Fierce ride

  • I will never be able to do that :(

  • he should like be a drummer for a corps like i would just watch him throughout a show!

  • He's a genius with those flams.

  • If I didn't have to sleep I would find everything JoJo has ever done and watch the lot, pure entertainment every beat

  • Someone playing something that complex should not look and feel that relaxed. I'm sorry.

  • @DCussen it would be impossible to play it if he was tense and straining.

  • jojo mayer......

  • plz what snare? it's fucking AMAZING.

  • @drumsandivory some expensive ass sonar... maybe a 12, prob a 13, maybe a 14...

  • @drumsandivory could be the 14x4 birch artist series, but he also uses 13's and 12's

  • mmmmmmmm sonor drums sound sooooo perfect................and jojo mayer is a masterrrrrrr

  • sweet.

  • Jojo's "Secret weapons" DVD is very educational and extremely entertaining. Get a copy now. Jojo's attitude is modern and progressive, and his playing reflects that, along with versatility.

  • it's me or the sticks look very long?

  • This just yells at me to play the drums for 4 months straight with no breaks apart from eating, drinking, shitting and falling asleep at the kit. I just want to be able to do SOMETHING just along the lines of what this guy can do... He's freakin' phenominal!

God damnit man, jelousy isn't the right word. It's like a form of jelousy but with so much inspiration crammed into it... I love this man's groove! I must have it! xD

  • That's my guy

  • I hear some Bonham in those grooves!

  • the best drummer

  • he is good.. very good :)

  • does it make me want to get better or does it make me want to quit, hmmm

  • haha I know what you mean ;)

  • @BenToppi makes you wanna quit cause the niggas virtually self taught : O

  • @BenToppi get better...

  • @BenToppi he makes it look so easy, just playing casually it seems; but i`ve decided, i`m gonna keep playing. :)

  • @BenToppi

    Get better, get better!!!!

  • @BenToppi what if yer better than this anyway?

  • @BenToppi No quitting! >:P Just play, and play, and play, and play...

  • Not groovy!!??

    You must be joking!

Look at other videos with Jojo and you'll see that you're wrong.

On the other hand I guess it's individual what you think is groovy and what's not :)

  • jojo mayer is not a groovy drummer? Which jojo mayer are you listening to? And a gods player? I don't even know what that means.

  • I was writing "not the most groovy drummer" ;) .. more artistic in his playing

  • ohhh 0:40

if that shit's not groovin' then i don't know what is!

  • well .. he is doing his best .. but if I wouldnt see this guy in a video I wouldnt believe that he is "human"

Groove is what distinguish god from a bot

  • ;o)))

  • OoO

  • not really groovin ... but nice .. anyway

  • the first half of the video is groove.

  • hells yea

  • is it my eyes or his sticks are really long? Awesome playing for sure.

  • no his signatures sticks are about a 5B in length like 16' maybe 16' 1/4.

  • 16 feet? No. lol

    L=15-21/64" (38.93cm), Dia.=.577" (1.40cm)

His sticks are roughly 15.3" shorter, slightly fatter and heavier than the convential 5b

  • really man you are going to cock me off just because i marked a number incorrectly you must have had absolutely nothing to say other wise and decided to pick on me. Thanks bro

  • godly chops.

  • killing it. plain and simple

  • Comment removed

  • his hands :so fluid!

  • my favorite part is the end where he looks like a deer in headlights.

  • Just goes to show that this man can blow anyone away in most genres. Be it his thundering jungle drum and bass or just a nice slow groove. Either way he knows how to make it more interesting!

  • "it´s not the horse, if not..the Rider."

  • 0:18-0:20 WOW

  • I know right? Right when I watched this I was just like WOAH at 0:18

  • extreme 5b,

    can't go wrong.

  • i think you could give jojo mayer any stick and he would kill with it on any kind of drumset

  • Jojo we love you! hahahaha

  • 5an vic firth extreme for me. perfect balance of weight, length and taper for me

  • same here

  • I like the 5a wood more. Bounces better :)

  • Such a great player

  • buenisimo! alto grooove

  • drumming is so cool

  • It is his signature stick!!! Awesome stivk tons of rebound on it!!!

  • I agree, but it's a little too short for me. I like to have a little more reach.

  • player not the stick

  • Cool drumming........I like it a lot..........

  • does anyone kno what size stick he's using?...they look thin like 7a but seem to be a lot longer then typical 7a's

  • Comment removed

  • his signature stick, vic firth, slightly modified 5a. Slightly thicker, slightly shorter

  • 0:48 Inverted flam taps are so awesome.

  • this guy is king, nice rudiments on the kit.

  • the best on this video is, that his drum kit doesn't sound so "WOOOW", it sounds like a drum kit , we all know.

there you hear the diffrence between a drum kit with microphons @ every tom, cymbal and snare..

    but its like ever..

you have to love him, because he is so great,

at the other side, you hate him because he is so great... xD

  • 0:45 has the craziest groove....its so jumpy! : )

  • yea, sort of seems like a medeski martin and wood kind of groove, no i am not comparing jojo to billy martin, im just saying

  • that flame control!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • loved the ending part of the solo

  • we all want....

  • i want to play like jojo mayer.

  • Nobody tells him to shut up at the end.. They were doing a soundcheck and the guy's just asking in swiss german:

"You haven't got any cd's with you?"

  • :41

    haha

  • haha ya right! hes grooves like no other! and theyre probably just askin if they cant have some of his magic spunk in theyre mouth.

  • all it is is grooves with chops and a little syncopatation. the grooves he plays just have a lot more goin on then other players like steve gadd and benny grebb. hes got groove, ask anyone.

  • I would say it was just a sound check...

  • Jojo tells metronomes what to do!

  • Compared to Jojo mayer, metronomes are out of time :)

  • jojo mayer is the metronome standard. when a company comes out with a new metronome, they compare it with a jojo mayer track and see if its remotely as good timing.

  • heh nice :)

  • LOL thanks for a good laugh

  • More Jojo Mayer jokes! :-D

  • @rageta1 he is the chuck norris of drum world!:D

  • jojo mayer and out of time will never fit together in the same conversation

  • woooo putain , il fou le seum

  • hell yeah, he is the best!

  • this guy is my hero. anyone agree?

  • I agree. I am a real Sabian fan and I have a Signature (now Vault) Jojo Mayer 21" Fierce Ride. Dark, dirty, beautiful !

Jojo certainly is one of my heroes...but I think Virgil Donati is the best.

  • I do!!!

  • EPIC FAIL?!! Study polyrhythmic placement a bit more and listen again. Right on time.

  • FinlyO, watch some of Jojos other vids. You need you head examined

  • why did jojo mayer startled at the end of the vid? anyways talking about syncopation and time.. every beat is counted in short he's perfect!

  • man hes good

  • Just because he goes off time doesnt mean its an epic fail lol

  • he doesn't even go out of time. its just syncopation... a fundemental things that drummers like him use to make awesome grooves...

    wow...

  • He's not a fraction of a second out of time... learn to listen.. Count with YOUR foot!

  • I know where the epic fail is.

    And it ain't Jojo...

  • he isnot off at all

  • He is in time the entire video...

  • His count is perfect.

  • haha idiot,

  • petercaveney, just because you can't comprehend what he's playing doesn't make it wrong. Jojo is perfectly in time here. Watch his left foot, and learn to count.

  • i honestly have never seen that one play traditional grip that good in a very long time in this generation

  • I expected a flame-war over Joey in this video. I guess you guys impressed me, too!

  • wow!!!!!!who the hell made him stop at last!!!!!!

  • Can anyone break down for me what he's doing at 0:35?

  • bdkshhh bbr dgdg dgbr brdgshtsss brbr dg dgdgd bdbdbd brdbdbshhh

  • there just john bohnam triplets execpt the kick is on two and four...............i think thats right lol good luck trying to figure it out. just listen and try to emulate. happy drumming

  • Man, I wish I could mix in some of that groove into my playing. I really love :44 to :50

  • Check RHYTHMTANDEM.

  • greatest most awkward ending to phenomenal drumming. L.O.L.

  • tasty

  • this guy's a legend/godly in my book. respect the jojo

  • 0:09 !!

  • 0:17 wow

  • übelst am abflowen, one of the best drummers ever!

  • I love the sound of the bassdrum.. any idea how it is tuned?

  • he said at a clinic that his tunning of his bassdrum sould be as big and nasty as possible! mild muffling. and and the batter head sould be just as lus as it could be without ringkels.

  • thanks dude :D ill try that next time on practicing :P

  • looool love his face at the end :D

good drummin aswell and i love the snares

  • Excellence.

His snare sounds amazing as well.

  • So awesome!!

  • if you look at his toms they have perfect circle black marks from brushes on them. That is how perfect he is.

  • Viola976431... your probably not a drummer, right?

  • im srry father.

  • It's ok son. I forgive you.

  • Very impressive! I like this man's style and form

  • can someone tell me the rudiment he uses at :19 please...either reply or message me.

  • I think it's a 6-stroke roll (RLLRRL sticking) between the ride and snare going into single stroke 32nds (from the 6 it'd be RLLRRL-RLRLRLRL) around the toms.

  • Its either that or a Paradiddle-diddle in 16th triplets, I cant really tell. The sticking is RLRRLL.

  • Paradiddlediddle.

  • His Reaction in the end :D

  • damn.

  • SICK!!!!!!!

  • Lovin' teh New Orleans feel...+the Jo Jo Amazingness.

  • I want to see more vids of him just grooving! That was sexy

  • He can groove!!

  • Have there ever been doubts about it? I'm just wondering...

  • Proving that you dont need a huge set to rock out.

  • LOL

it's so funny how he finishes this video...

"what, did someone call me?" :P

  • i think jojo may well have the best hand technique...incredible

  • he's also incredible with his feet.

  • yeah i sorta agree, although my favourite drummer is dave weckl...his foot technique is just as amazing as his hand technique...

  • Actually his foot technique can't compare with Jojo's. neither the hands. Jojo is the only person alive who has such control with traditional grip. Amazing.

  • oops i meant jo jo mayer and not dave weckl...jo jo mayer's hand technique and foot technique.....

  • i love to listen as much as i love to play.

    murphy.

  • haha what were they yelling at the end?

  • Unreal.

  • just got turned on to this guy. Been watching alot of drum stuff on youtube lately (christ, I miss playing) anyways...the only drummer I've seen with a better left hand is Steve Smith.

  • actually i think you will find jojo is a lot more capable than steve with his left hand, steve doesn't quite have the speed that jojo is able to create. sure steve is great don't get me wrong, but jojo is just the man!

  • If you want proof that Jojo is - next to musically higly innovating - technically one of the best players today, watch His DVD (secret weapons for the modern drummer). Jojo is indeed Unreal.

  • unreal? he's the best drummer in the world! technical is he the best!!!!!

  • I personally ment unreal as a quite flattering comment.
