How things have changed in 12 short years... in fact in 2004 and beyond, a mere 5 year after this May 3rd storm photos would have been a plenty as people texted images in and new high res radar was available.
well with the internet and texting we are safer because warning time is greater when YOU take action and understand to read radars and know how fast and what direction it is going
Sitting watching this & other tornado outbreaks while we are under a tornado watch & severe t-storm warning.NNW of us there is a tornado warning.
The storms we had this past week have been crazy but nothing close to this outbreak back in 1999 & hope it NEVER get's that way.
Seen 3 tornado's in the last 10 years hit my town with the biggest being a F2~F3,we all were lucky.People that think hurricanes are scary need to come to the midwest!
@SSArt98 well, tornadoes are sometimes formed from hurricanes, so technically they are worse than tornadoes. Then again, at least a hurricane can be seen coming, while the same is not true for a tornado. IDK, both are pretty brutal
I remember this. I was 5 years old, living in Hennepin, just south of Ardmore, when I saw this news report. There were so many tornadoes, in so many places, that I was scared. And the tornadoes that occured recently reminded me of that night.
@MyJonny25 The is no such thing as an F6. The Fujita scale only goes to 5. Its now the EF scale or Enchanced Fujita and it still only goes to 5. This storm had wind of 308 mph not the 318mph previously stated.
@MommaOkie If you correct someone, make sure your corrections are correct themselves. The winds were only 308 at the ground. The 318 mph winds were at 100 feet in the air which is where the doppler radar can measure. Radar can't scan through trees stupidass. That's why the DOW is made like it is.
@LetUsChangeThings The origional fujita scale that was put out by Dr Ted Fujita in 1971 did not have an F-6. The scale went from 0-6. F5 topping out at 261-318. That it he entire reason they went to the advanced scale. The new enhanced scale also tops out at 5 but is much more precise, it uses 28 different types of damage indicators to determine the rating. I have lived in tornado alley all my life, have been trained as a storm spotter , and have chased many storms, I know this scale!
@MommaOkie hard to say if you're true, a NOAA run site says it origionally was a supposed to bridge the scale between the beaufort scale and mach 1, but it also says Dr. Fujita's scale did top out at five. I do clearly remember seeing some scales go up to f6 and describing it as inconceivable.
@tremer88 101.9 the twister, is KTST Oklahoma City and was named that before may 3 1999, and is one ofthe best readio stations in the OKC metro area. They did one heck of a job on this day.

This isn't a F6 because the Fujita dosn't classify tornados by Wind speed it classified them by Damage. Besides now its Ehanced fujita scale
WillyT1123 10 months ago
This is for the dipshits arguing about the officially recorded wind speed:
The difference between 308 mph and 318 mph is 10 mph.
10 miles per hour is a non-difference when the winds get over 300 mph.
Either way those winds were (and still are) the highest winds ever officially recorded on this planet.

@MommaOkie actually, the origional fujita scale did have a tornado ranking of f-6. However, the enhanced fujita scale does top out at EF5

@1234noaa22 give or take 18 mph. Some reports where saying wind was 301. Either way once the winds reach over 300 mph it doesnt really matter.
