To rlutinski3, of course you wouldn't want to listen to the same music, but the quality of their creativity, their ability to captivate a mood and expand upon it was revolutionary thirty years ago. They really did depart from it around the 90's. It's all good, the early stuff was just epically better. Like this gem of a song.
u2 when they were still u2?? i feel some of their best music was made back then, but do you REALLY want to listen to 30 years worth of the same songs played over and over? they evolved, taking influences from other genres.

I'm 21, and black, and really like this song. I doubt there are too many people around my age that really like this song, or type of music. The lyrics to this song is awesome.
The members of U2, except for Adam Clayton, come from Christian backgrounds (either Irish Catholic or Irish Catholic/Protestant mixed families) and Christian spirituality are a part of a lot of their music, especially in their earlier albums. This song does portray a woman on the verge of suicide. But, there is also redemption in the song as well. Near the end of the song, the words, "If I wanna live I gotta die to myself someday." This idea of dying to self comes out of Bono's Christian faith.
all organised religion is evil. i was brought up in catholic ireland! I reject everything them cunts ever tried to say to me. We might as well be nazi youth its the same thing!
This is so weird... My neighbor was showing me his vegetable garden today, and I picked up an index card randomly lying under his orange tree. It was blank on top, and just had "Sadie" written on the bottom, but I didn't ask him why. And then tonight I felt impelled to dial up this song to luxuriate in its mind-blowing guitar textures, and realized the mysterious Ms. Sadie from this song's lyrics must've brought me here.
What were they thinking? - war is the most evil thing on earth, death, terror, poverty and misery is all that it is good for, but it's damn profitable for the scum who promote it and actively encourage it to line their own pockets.
I love this song. My fav thing about WAR, was its raw power. Its a masterpiece. I haven't heard anything quite like it before or since. I also love the back up vocal by "The Coconuts"
This song is ethereal!! And yes, mesmerizing...I used to just get lost in it when I played this LP!! And I def agree that Joshua Tree was their last good album. I just hope Steve Lilywhite doesn't wreck one of my fav bands right now-Blue October. He produced their last CD "Approaching Normal."
Best of each of the four. Bono's vocal, The Edge's progressions, Mullen's drums, and Clayton's Bass go together seamlessly on this one. Simply mesmerizing.
My favorite by U2. The atmospheric guitar and Mullen's rhythmic drums make it seem almost mesmerizing. Songs like these that made them one the best bands on the planet.
i disagree. Just cause it's different doesn't mean it's crap. people expect bands to not change...U2 wasn't afraid to take chances. Pop is amazing I think, very dark at times but well worth listening to. War is probably my all-time fave lp though....
@KOSMICKEN09 My music of choice is prog so i'm all for change, Pain of Salvation are one of my fav bands and they change radically from album to album, i just want it to be decent and for me it wasn't with U2. In my eyes they went off the boil and haven't produced anything of substance in years.

Boy. October and War are stale recordings compared to when they brought Eno aboard. The main stream of all three recordings is youthful excitement and energy. Everything after was much better produced.

Who are these amateur musicians anyway? Is this some sort of 6th form semesta project? The bass playing alone sounds like a toddler has found a bass guitar and decided to sound like Mick Karn or Pinop Palladino minus any discernable musical ability. What an unjust world we live in ay? Well, at least Trent Reznor lives....

Oh, you lucky fellow! But can you sing like Bono? Are your efforts to save the world as dedicated as his? No biggie - we are all God's childen, and I still admire Bono - big head and all! Have a good day!
Well I'm not a fellow, and as for Bono...he made more money in his life than ever before when doing his so-called-charity work.
Just like money face Geldof...now there's another one who claims to be all heart, when really they're coining it in, when it comes to Live-aid etc. Bah!!
Ha, "soft lad"...you gotta be a scouser?. I agree with you on the bono having a big head thing. Great singer but he's up his own ass in a massive way.
Spaticus09-I agree sometimes Bono comes across as an arrogant prick....But I believe it is a protective mask. @tacobob89 that' would be good but I sure wish they would close w/'40'. a classic show closer if you remember the 80's shows. sing w/me, this is "40."
