I think Rush should take you on their next tour! Just in casr Neil ever becomes ill or gets lost on his motorcycle in some God forsaken back country when his Garmin quits working! Excellent playing...keep on drumming, God has gifted you with an awesome talent.
@Subber75 If you go to "edit" on one of your videos, the last setting available is called "syndication". If you open that, you can select the top option to make it available on mobile devices.
i hate to do this, cause you do such a great job. its just the beginning right after the snare hits, part has a slight pause...snare snare, snare snare snare snare, kick kick snare kick.... (rest)--( kick kick kick snare kick )... just listen closer...
@ponygal1233 Not quite I think. What you hear in my video are the ghostnotes on the snare drum and the hi-hat foot action. They are a bit more difficult to hear on the studio version but they are there and you can really hear them on many live versions. I don't pretend these videos are 100% exact anyway.
@Astrotama tbf, this is perhaps the only Rush song where you can't really go by the live versions to pick the song apart, as it's the only song in the catalog that turned into a rather different song live.
It makes this one of the most difficult songs to cover, too.
Quick question. Are you listening to the song through headphones or are you just listening to it by itself without an ipod,mp3 player, etc playing the music out through whatever they're coming out from. If you are listening to it through headphones in your ears, how does that work with it still being produced out and also in your ears? Just wondering and great drumming.
@2112rushfan1 I listen to the songs through the headphones. No other music is coming out. I overdub and synchronize the song over the video afterward.
Mr. StrikerSerafy99, I have loved Rush and Neil from 1974 / 1975 and you would make them very proud with the excellent covers you do. I also play some Rush tunes (among others) and know how difficult they are but you sir by far do the most superior covers I have ever seen. I love "Animate" but would never have the brass to video it and put it on youTube. You sir are an amazing dummer and I thank you for your videos. By the way, What is the name of your band?
I found that the hardest part about playing this song was hitting the ride in the bell area and then back down & up and keep it consistant along with all the other rudimental patterns, awesome job astrotama!
Hey there - you're back!! - I watched your videos last year around the time they were being taken down so I presume all that kerfuffle has been "sorted"? Just went to the Rush show a couple of weeks back in Dublin so am going through a fresh phase of Rush appreciation!! This is perhaps my favourite song of their "more" modern stuff. Keep it up - great to see someone get so much fun from the challenges of this man's work!! D
@StrikerSerafy99 Tendinitis in wrists and shoulders. Common ailments for drummers playing hard music. Back issues are also common. I'm actually on hiatus from playing due to a low back injury (not induced by drumming).
Thanks a lot brother that's really inspiring. I was thinking of starting to practice music and I couldn't choose between guitar and drums but you are really a good persuader.
Marvelous performance. I couldn't differ between the mp3 track and this version. Absolutely stunning. I just have one question. Why aren't you smiling while performing?! You look like you're suffering and not enjoying at all. What's with that??
1 more question. At the end of the track do you get exhausted from all that concentration? Sorry I have no knowledge in music playing.
@StrikerSerafy99 Interesting question! In fact, I can smile a lot while playing (ask my bandmates!) but when I'm under pressure (like playing live or trying to nail a good take for a video), I've learned that about myself: I must concentrate as much as possible and be in my own musical world. Playing Rush is not only a physical exercise but also mentally really hard (most of the time). You cannot let your brain wonder too far away from the music. So, I guess I don't have time to smile.;)
@StrikerSerafy99 At the same time, most people comment that I seem to enjoy myself while playing. I really do and you can see that in many other ways (head motion is one). Unfortunately, I also have some injuries from playing (and hitting so hard; this is what Rush music needs) so sometimes, I hurt and I cannot smile much about it! Some videos you see also where done at the end of long practice sessions, sometimes playing for 2 hours and more in a row without a break.
@Astrotama SOrry, you're right. I see they put a setting there but I know for a fact that videos with copyright issues (a lot of mine) might not play on mobile devices anyway. Let me try that and we'll see...
I have always enjoyed scouring the web for gifted guitarist with the patience and good will to upload rush songs for us lesser mortals to learn from, I never thought to look for someone taking on the drum parts. This is outrageously good, what a collection, Thank you, thank you, Thank you, amazing Astrotama
@FatalParalax All the cymbals are Sabian Paragons, so 2 x 10" and 1 x 8" splashes. I love them but there are also many other splashes to choose from on the market. Trying them is best.
Hi. Super work on this and your other Rush covers! Would you consider collaborating on some Rush tunes? I've been working with other Youtube collab musicians and it's great fun.
i looked at your profile on your home page and it said you were from tucson, az. . you can take the canadian out of canada, but you can't take canada out of the canadian. I wear sandals and socks also.... in the winter. i'm a b.c. boy from courtenay...... cheers!
@MrTBBiggs Ah, the famous debate about my shoes... ;) Yup, on this one I'm playing with Teva sandals. Sometimes, I don't wear any shoes, or Converse, or Berkies or.... It's just does not matter too much for me I guess. If I can control my toes and the shoe is held in place well, everything is fine.... ;)
@Astrotama didn't mean for a debate! Drummer myself & actually picky about my shoes. I've got a pair of Teva's and really like the tacky grip on the pedals.
Your snare sounds different than it used to in the past. Not sure if it's the mic or something else. Your playing, as always is spot on but curious if you did anything different to the snare.......just asking?
@raphinus25 Wow, you have quite an ear! I did change something! I bought a new snare a few weeks back - metal snare, very loud - and I wanted to clearly distinguish the sound of the Starclassic wood snare to that new one. I tuned it at a slightly lower pitch and loosen up the strands to not choke the drum so much. The result is a more "wooden" sound rather than a pure crack. I almost used the metal snare on this track but it did not have quite the right tone. I'm amazed you picked that up!!
@mrlurp Euh, this is a hard question. The number of fills possible on a drumset is essentially infinite. Most are based on single strokes, played as 4th or 8th notes, with or without accents. The key is to keep time too while playing fills; Neil is a master at that. When something complicated occur in a song, it's usually important to try to *understand* the fill first, sticking, and such, and rehearse it at slow speed. Practice, practice, practice!
@Astrotama In fact, there is a story from Terry Brown on Neil in a recent book on prog music. He said that while recording songs in studio, Neil often wants to play these complicated, tricky fills. He then sits down on the kit, figures out what he wants to play and how, practice the fill non-stop sometimes for hours, and then when he nails it, he nails it all the time afterward. So: Decide what to do, practice it, and then play! ;)
@wnils Thanks! I used to do that fill a bit differently but I watched Neil and this is what he does now. For those asking, those are quadruplets: KK-SS KK-TT KK-FF KK-SC
@ThePsychicSasquatch Thanks! But no, not perfect... ;) There are a few little missteps on this take (for instance, I missed a cymbal hit with my left hand at 1:36, go figure...). Oh well. I tried.
@QuickBurn70 In fact, I moved it! I realized last week that that cymbal was too low and moved it back up where it was supposed to be. I guess my brain forgot about that!
