Stephenie Meyer mentioned once on her website that Steven Strait was her original preference for the role of Jacob. (Enough so as to feature a picture of Warren Peace in one of her homemade book covers for New Moon.) So I'm assuming that's where a lot of the hype came from. Personally, I'm actually kinda glad he didn't go through with it, if only because I loved Sky High and still despise Twilight to this very day.
