  • yes. It'll be good to fully assess the length and get a good trim. :)

  • what's the inspiration behind the eye at the beginning of your videos?

  • @benjaminscameron

truth, clarity, vision, seeing the light, path to the soul...as it relates to discovering, accepting, and owning the beauty of myHair, as it is naturally.

  • I'm happy that you're happy but your comment that "we all have this hair (less frizz; more defined curl)... and it's so distressing to know we don't know our potential", is a little pretentious. That statement suggests ppl w more frizz or more of a fro than you somehow have hair that isn't just fine the way it is. You DID manipulate your hair (the CO method) and it frankly doesn't look much different than any other Afro. So let's not act like your way is somehow the "natural" way.

  • @CheezInspector

wow u really missed my point entirely. 'we' in gen do not kno our hairs potential bc we are told from young it has to be fixed via relaxer, etc so most dont know what their hair looks like just that its frizzy and impossible to manage - me included

whether u have more or less frizz has nothg to do with it - all 4b hair is fine just the way it is which was my point. the COmethod allowd easier manip. i never said my way was "the natural way" - just that it made life easier

  • @cynthiarf, you didn't make any of that clear. ... But after what you just said I will assume then, that you are saying that w/out manipulating 4-type hair with a CO method, people ALREADY live up to their hairs' potential, which kind of nullifies the need for someone peddling a CO method on people.

  • Your rant is what I am living since I BC'd last month... It's amazing how when I sit on the train, NO ONE will sit next to me, but they all STARE!!! I hate it... and at the same time, I love it, cuz I know my hair looks so good that it's almost "un-normal" to see such healthiness. I'm wondering if I look militant (black panther-ish), not that I really care. Just wanted you to know you're an inspiration to many, including me. You're one of the reasons I finally decided to go natural.

  • aww! thanks!! im so glad i could help launch u into freedom! and ur true beauty :)

yup i think (esp here in america) natural hair on black women is still seen as 'militant' and angry. now ive learned to just smile. when i do its funny how their face changes to "oh, shes not mad" LOL...craziness!!!

so in a way its our job now to disband those myths - a smile goes a long way :) and it does get easier...

just wait til you get the 'is it yours / how did you do that' questions

  • i know this video is from a while ago but...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! lol please please don't straighten it. i looove your hair and i feel like when you pull out a coil like that it's like BLADOW!!! look how much length i'm hiding, bitches!! haha i just love that element of surprise, and the strength (yes, strength) that natural women have to not flaunt exactly how long their hair is. it's such an inspiration.

  • lol! i love that...bladow! lol thanks a bunch...

i do find when i see those 'looks' of uncertainty in others i just grab a coil and pull it out and twirl it over my fingers...thats my passive aggressive way of saying fk u, take that! LOL

  • You have such a soothing voice girl. You talk like Janet Jackson. I just wanted you to know that I really like your videos. If I were you I leave your hair in all its glory the way it is. Yes Ir it were straight it would look fly. But theres nothing better then being uniquely you the way God created you. Thanks for all the inspiration, ABE

  • (cont) the ends off (a significant length) and start again. Now i will never ecer straighten my hair again. I love my hair and those people who can't see past their relaxed or weaved hair need to look past that shit and realise that some women love the hair the way it grows. It's just plain ignorant. I still get asked 'when am i gonna relax it or straighten it'. NEVER. Sorry for long rant. love your hair!

  • no problem (about the rant)...sometimes we just gotta let it out! we're fighting many many decades of ingrained negative notions about us AND our hair...we say we dont believe the hype but then play right into it every time!

well i know i prob will never trust anyone else to straighten it if i choose, but that even scares me now! crazy right? since i used to perm w/o even really thinking w excessive heat and now even a warm diffusing i shy away from!

  • Please don't ever straighten that amazing hair. The perception of natural hair by some people (i find, especially my own race) is seriously fucked up. Why can't they accept this is the way my hair grows out of my head and that i don't want to chemically kill it? i had a a woman once tell me that she doesn't understand why anyone would want to handle their natural hair. WHAT?! I'm sick of the looks.I stupidly straightened it last year because of pressure and i got some heat damage so i had to cut

  • ohhhh ur hair is awesome :-)

  • love your coils Cynthia -- you have such a beautiful consistent tight coil - love it - love love it.

  • Don't. You. Dare. Flat Iron. Your. Crown! :) I am in such hair envy of you, it would be a crime to reduce your volume and risk damaging your coils with heat. What happens if your hair doesn't revert? Of course, it's up to you, but I'd pay money to make my hair look like yours. Don't change for the haters or the jealous.

  • Wow u favor Maxwell before he cut his hair. Eyebrows, eyes, chin... lol. Cool.

  • your hair is WOW!!! And i want to see it blowed out!! Please do it and make a video! Try to do it the most healthy way..rollerset en blow dry!

  • i have one...check it out :)

  • I'm glad that I caught this video and started using Organics. I still use it now after about 3 months and my coils just pop, plus my 3c hair on the top stays wavy. I did notice that they changed the formula, but thank God I found a BSS that had the old formula still available. Guess when this jar runs out, I'll have to find something else to use, but for now, I'm sticking with it.

  • well ive gotten a few responses since posting the retractions saying that they use the new formula, they love it and was wondering why i quit!!

so idk, im starting to think not all prods with mineral oil is "death" LOL :) explains why they say its all in the formulation that makes the difference

  • i think you should! just to see what itd look like :)

  • Wow, your hair texture is exactly like mine! It looks so gorgeous, and I am glad to see what my hair will look like longer.

Everything you say about taking care of natural hair is just so true. The more you leave it alone, the better it is.

As far as straightening it, I agree with a poster down below, do it yourself. Just get a good heat protectant and look at some vids on YouTube, and you can do it without heat damage. I have done so about 3 or 4 times in the 2 years I've been natural. :)

  • thanks

i think i am gonna take that advice when (if) i do straighten it

  • This is an awesome video! When I did my BC...I was extremely close to bald headed & people looked at me like I was crazy or asked "What do you plan on doing with your hair...relax it? It's still short but now since it's grown, those questions are turning into; How did you get your hair like that? or I you are mixed with something? It shocks me but I realized that many people of African descent don't even know or remember what their "real" or natural hair feels or looks like. Again, awesome vid!

  • true, i TOTALLY FORGOT how it felt when i BCd I was like...

"how long has it REALLY been? cause it feels like AGES"

I havent had natural hair since age 10. I BCd 2 months ago or so... and i'm still like "wow, oh my gosh... this is wicked. Look at this."

  • i am trying to transition (i mean BABY stages, like i had my last relaxer 2 weeks ago) and that is one of the things i'm really excited about. knowing what MY hair looks like. i haven't seen my natural hair since i was a child. i hope i can really go through with this without falling back on my relaxer b/c i'm at a loss as far as what to do with me hair. love your vids!

  • lol @ baby stages...2 wks ago - well gotta start somewhere :)

i was like u, i didnt remember either, just the pain/tears/negativity/etc

i almost texturized at one point but that was b4 i found YT and ive learned sooo much since then - so hang in there - it gets easier the more you know

  • If u want it straight, I think u should do it ur self. I wouldn't trust someone else to do it. Your hair is gorgeous. Now I have u, rustic beauty, and janeezy for my hair inspiration. I'm gonna try ur conditioning wash method. Thanks for the great videos!!

  • I really love your videos. Keep it coming. You're so encouraging. I usually always agree with what you are saying.

  • Yeah I get the texturizer question a lot from people when we are around town and I love telling people that it is what I just have. I tell many of the relaxed women I meet who ask if I'm textured "we have no idea what's hiding under our relaxers." I like seeing them get intrigued by the idea that they may actually like their natural hair too.

  • good for you!!! thats a great response, im gonna have to use that one :)

thats what i want, instead of immediately assuming their hair isnt like this, they are left intrigued bc then you know the light bulb came on...even if its on dim! lol

  • try the blow-out. one time won't hurt you or change the texture. i've done it maybe 2ce in the 2yrs that i've been natural and i too have 4a,b,c hair. as long as you know how to take care of it, LIKE you know HOW...then you should be just fine....i am! are you okay now? i saw your "twisted" series....

  • yes, thanks for asking...its not over but pandoras box has been opened - finally!

  • you are so right we do not know that we have growing beautiful curly hair..bc we are use to society saying,"nappy ugly is black hair" I had some one black man say some disturbing things about my hair but I am getting over it.

  • Your hair is so beautiful, no..no heat! I know the temptation, I had it myself and I damaged some hair in the process! So, I'm still not clear as to what you are doing now. Are you leaving Organics Olive Oil conditioner in your hair after washing, you don't rinse it out and you like it? I left Herbal Essence conditioner in my hair and I ended up with a great fro like yours! I didn't even know my hair could look that good! It never even stood up b4! yaay! But I had tons of shrinkage! :(

  • yup, using OOO cond as a leave-n and i LOVE it!! it actually makes my hair hang a bit. now i skip cowashing most of the time when i use it...

havent tried herbal essence yet but other conditioners did what u said, got a great look but a lot of shrinkage

  • Please,,,no heat!!!! It is beautiful the way it is....

  • No. I don't think so.

But that's prolly just me being overly protective of YOUR hair lol

Heat might mess up all that gorgeousness!

  • To cynthiarf and tgee12, our hair 'boggles' the mind, because in it's natural state (not weaved, permd, flat-ironed, etc.) I feel it's the 8th Wonder of The World... ;0)

    4b lady/lockd 5yrs

    Peace, blessings, & bliss...

  • If you want to straighten try a wet roller set or banding instead of heat.

  • yea, thanks alot of this advice: co-washing everyday and leaving a little conditioner in.

my roommate has noticed more coils in my hair and i've only been at it for a week. dude, thats awesome. so simple :)

  • Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Don't do it! What is the point you're trying to make... I see your length as is... Your hair is Beautiful...

  • I just cut my hair about 1 month ago and I do have "the 4b coils". I will admit I did not know it was so coily because since I was a little girl I had always gotten my hair permed and I understand it takes at least 1 inch of new growth tell the "real" texture. However when I started growing my natural hair before my BC, I was supprised at the texture. Anyway, I get comments ALL the time and people (black and non) asking about what did I put in my hair to get it to the coily texture.

  • LOLOL...wow! It is CRAZY isn't it? HOW did you do it? I have gotten that too and it does boggle the mind. Even people in MY family have asked this??!!! And, it definitely has come rom practically ALL ethnicities...and you're so right: it's deep how we don't even know our OWN hair. It boggles the mind...

  • lol at 5:26....if they only knew we dont wake up looking like this....that comment was a classic and funny....as far as your hair im torn....i absolutely love your hair and your hair is my hair's idol lol...then again i would love to see how long it is and what it would look like straight...which ever choice you make i know it will look good on you....im fairly young i think and i appreciate what you are doing and you have inspired me to try something new....so keep looking great!!

  • oh yea, I think you could treat yourself and get straighten. Maybe it's safer to do rollersetting it. I would love to see how it looks flat ironed but understand the fear of the heat. It's been 5 - 6months for me.

  • Just checking you out again and laughing my ass off at "hmm I guess you dont have to relax your hair" screw face. ha ha

Anyway, what did you decide to do?

  • I've straightened my hair before and it didn't even last two days and they pressed it hard. I had it done at a beauty school. If you're hair is anything like mine it'll bounce back w/ no problem.

  • DON'T DO IT!!!! lol How about banding, and then a stretched twist out?? :)

  • LMAO of at this video. Unfortunately, I don't really get many compliments on my hair yet. I don't where it out during the week at work, but I look forward to wearing it out every weekend and I don't care what people think. Practice makes perfect and length helps alot so I'm patiently waiting. At first I did think that your hair was was strange, likeWOW. But it's WOW in a good way. It's strong, it's healthy, it's massive, and yes it is beautiful! I look forward to seeing all of your videos.

  • I straightened my hair for the first time this past week and I hated it! It looked great but I missed my coils and washed it after three days of straightening it. It's your decision but I felt it was a waist of the time I spent to do it.

  • no, i think you should wait on getting it straightened professionally until most of it is a ways down your back. if you straighten it at this point, find a way to do it yourself, they you can learn what works and doesn't and can gain a good idea on how to guide a stylist when that time comes...or how to measure if they know what the hell they're doing when you consult with them initially. All won't know what's up, even some of the natural hair beauticians.

  • i'm feelin you on this. i had a lady the other day we were waitin for the bus & she said to me "oh i love your hair you must have the good hair." then she proceeded to talk about her crazy bad nappy hair. i told her it was the same kinky stuff as her & she can do it herself to have the same look. i swear she must have lit up like a kid on christmas.

about straightening a heat protectant & a good flat iron is all you need. straight or springlety you'll look fabulous.

  • I say straighten it and see how much length you really have. There are some great heat protectants out there now; you should be OK. Isn't the CO method the BEST. Changed my world, too! Good Luck, love to see your results if u straighten!

  • i think you will be okay if you use a really good heat protector. maybe sabino moisture block.

im in love with your hair!

can we have a skin regimen video?

  • Why do you need to straighten it just because its long?

  • no, not just bc its long...just bc im curious thats all and looking to do something different

  • Oh okay. I guess I just like the way your hair looks so much. I just don't want to see you go straight. But of course its your hair and your choice :)

  • As much as It would be interesting for ME to see ya hair straight (lol) I'd have to say don't do it...You look f*kkin' awesome! :D

  • Well gurlie if I were you I would be scared to do it...If I were you I would be so in love with the lush fro(LOVREYOUR HAIR)and then be afraid of exactly what you said the heat damge because depending on where you go they might think that for your hair they need crazy amounts of heat so if you do go, go somewhere where they spacialize in the natural hair care

  • LOL. I get that question also - "what number barrell curling iron do you use to get your hair to look like that!?" LMAO!!! It's all nautral baby! lol IT is sad... but true! ;)

I get my hair SUPER STRIGHT once a year (for my b-day). I have not had ANY problems. Just make sure you get someone who specializes in natural/healthy hair and respects your desire to be natural and you should be all good. However, I imagine straighening the hair often is NOT a good thing! lol

  • If you would like your hair flat ironed then do it yourself. I had my hair professionally flat ironed and it never reverted back. My fro looks horrible now because there are straight chunks of hair.

  • Comment removed

  • what is that song in the beginning of your video's?

  • the "whistling" tune? i honestly dont remember

  • aw man! i mean woman lol if it ever pops back in your head just tell me if you can. lov ur vids

  • I too have 4b hair but it's not anywhere near as thick as yours, and yet someone seeing our hair textures might actually use the same approach to straightening it. What might work on you might cause me to be bald!

Since you're in observation mode, you might also want to straighten your hair so you can see how people react to it compared to how they react to your naps. It is a TRIP and it can be very annoying...I'm not gonna give away too much (though others on YT have discussed this).

  • This grow-round (4th time growing out from a BC; been natural 13 years; 20 months since BC) I refuse to use heat so I've accepted that I won't be wearing super-straight hair anytime soon. It's not like there's a shortage of straight-haired people, lol.

IF you decide to pay someone to straighten your hair, I emphatically agree that you go to someone who knows what they're doing. Nap-hate and nap-fear often causes stylists to use hotter heat weapons than they should.

  • I'm so glad that you are having so much success in caring for your hair!! I really want to say thank you for all of your vids, I love them and look forward to seeing many more.

  • Dont do it.

  • We have similar curl patterns and about the same length. I straightened just the back of my hair and a little bang in the front, last weekend and it was cool to see how long it had gotten, but after a few days I was over it and I was glad I didn't straighten the whole thing . I just wore a puff in the middle lol. it was cute. I recommend you do it, but use heat protectant and you shouldn't have any heat damage.

  • your hair really is relaxer-free they can't believe how nice the curl pattern looks. Because of what a lot of us was taught gowing up. I know it gets annoying, we all get that annoyance but keep up the good work and let them see you rock that fro like it suppose to be rocked. Maybe you can encourage a few to become natural.

  • A lot of people (black people) will question you about your hair and it is sad but there's a reason. Not taking up for them but think about it Cynthia, it has been instilled in us for years that I our hair is bad/unmanageable. After using the relaxers for so many years, when we use to see the new growth growing in under that perm it use to look so bad. Then we go get a relaxer and everything was cool, so once again, it was straight good bye nappy hair. Now that people really how beautiful......

  • I like to check my growth with a press or blow out maybe twice a year.

Sometimes I just I don't want to do a lot of heat so I just get it blown dry and rock it that way for a few days/get some cornrows.

My stylist likes to press the roots and then flat iron. So i ask her to just flat iron with less heat. it still comes out fabulous.

My hair has always reverted back with the exception of my nape area the ends didn't go back however it was a really small amount as like you said can be trimmed.

  • i think you should learn to do it, then do it yourself...who can u trust the most (yourself) and see what temp is appropriate. I went and go my hair straightend on time and it was so hot the clump of hair was burnt off and i had a alf alfa piece in the front of my hair...UNLESS its a natural salon and they actually care about your hair as much as you do

  • I love you hair, you don't need it straight, unless you really want to but I think its beautiful.

  • there are a lot of heat protectors and better quality flat irons and dryers that obviously wont protect your hair 100% but it does help in protecting somewhat....its better than nothing. so i think its ok, i've seen some naturals that straighten their hair quite often and it reverts right back with no prob...so go for it! just use the heat protectors good tools and be careful of the heat settings and your hair will be all peachy!

  • I defiantly know the feeling. Me personally I think I should experience a complete cycle before risking damage to my hair. The complete life cycle for hair is 7 years I believe.

  • Question: when was your last relaxer?

Mine was at the end of 2005, I think--and my hair is just reaching the lengths you stretched your hair to!!!

What's your tips to great growth? Do you eat very healthy? Take vitamins? Etc?

Obviously, we know you take great care of your hair with the co-washing...but what else are you doing?

  • hey kookie!! my last relaxer was ny eve 2006

    i dont take vitamins,i always forget,then i just stop-that reminds me lol

    i drink water,herbal teas at nite,coffee in the morn,some juices,no soda,occasional cocktail or beer...

rarely eat fast food, except subway or pizza - mainly pizza :) nothing crazy just balanced

veggies to cookies (just made a batch of oatmeal raisin - yum) to nuts to bagels - LUV bread! F' a no-carb diet! meat in small portions

so i think its just the constant cowashing

  • Hey Cynth!! You know I LOVE your vids, right??? :-D

Let's see if I can limit this comment into the space alloted. I too, have had people in awe that my hair coils in tiny ringlets on it's "own". And this amazement and disbelief was from an ASIAN worker at a nail shop--go figure???

Of course, you are going to have your pros/cons to straightening, sis. But it really has to be a personal decision. I straighten my hair once a year--just my choice to do so.

  • (cont'd)

I went to a professional 1 out of the 3 times I've ever straightened. I prefer to practice doing it myself, tho. Check out my Fotki to see how I did with the straightening. Tips for the professional: make sure they use a flat iron -- NOT those stove irons. And just ask them lots of questions revolving your concern for heat damage. Tips for the "self": research info on hair boards and youtube & once u have enuf knowledge, give it a try. I did. Many others have. But it's ur choice.

  • Your hair is great. But if you decide to flat iron it, be careful use low heat and don't go for the perm look, and you hair should snap back. I'm lazy, and after a day of caring for straight hair I think I would do a co-wash and shake. Great video.

  • Don't flat iron. Do a cool air blow out; or try the banding again.

  • I'm natural too, (4b)and I have a mother whos str8 from the old scool she can't wait to see my hair straightend I won't do it because I'm fearful my hair won't go back to it's natural state easily. Plus I kinda like be a natural head I can do almost all the hair styles I use to do when I had a perm. I really don't see the need to go str8. I said all this to say your hair is beautiful the way it is

  • I completely agree with you. I used to say things like that when I had relaxed hair. I had a natural coworker and I said, "That looks good on you but I couldn't do it." "Your hair texture is different from mine; my hair won't look like that if I cut it." She was very patient with me and just said, "We have the same hair, you just don't know it yet." Now when people say the same things to me, I am patient with them. Being natural is kind of like being an ambassador for self discovery.

  • YESS! I wonder what it will look like.. I know it will be THICK like molasses and healthy looking! I say yes!

  • I love your hair! But why not switch it up a bit I say..

  • yea ppl start to wonder what did you do and can mines be like yours

  • yet and still i want to press it at times. but once i do i always kick myself after the 2nd or 3rd day. Your texture looks just like mine and my daughter, nice and strong coils, so a press will look good, but is not worth it

  • NO NO NO NO....don't do it. The texture of your hair is perfect the way it is. I know that feeling of wanting to press it out after being natural for so long just to see how much it has grown. But heat protectant or not...there will be damage to your hair afterwards because your hair will struggle to coil back to it's natural state. I have been natural since 98' went from perm, fro, locks, fro now just loving the length and variety of things i can do with my naps...

  • It is your hair, hon. Do what you want. But personally, I am loving your fro!

  • Heck yeah. That is the beautful thing about being natural, is the versatility

  • I don't think you should change your hair a bit if you wanna switch it up by all means go ahead but I personally like the fro

  • Only if you can get it done cheap. Nothing like paying $60 for a hairsyle that lasts 3 days max. Once you get used to walking around not thinking about your hair ever it's hard to go back.

  • Girl Id say go for it but I dont want to be at fault if you sustain any damage. It would be so cool to see how long its grown. Maybe if you took your heat protectant with you and made sure they put enough on and made sure they didnt run the flat iron more than twice it would be cool. Id sure love to see it:-)

  • curlmebella- I'm surprised that you would encourage such a thing- it only takes 1 time to have unreversable heat damage- shoot- I've personally have fried my hair- and I thought I was being careful! Don't do it Cynthia!

  • Curly! dont be like that, I just know I was able to straighten my hair without any damage and if you do it responsibly and infrequently I think it could be ok. Its probably a perspective thing, Ive never had heat damage so although I fear it, I dont have the ability to know it as a reality. I would probably say dont do it if I had fried my hair before too. Cynthia are you sorry you asked for advice yet?:-)

  • Comment removed

  • Go for it! Your hair is going to look sooo good! I think you only have to worry about heat damage if you blowing out and/or flat ironing your hair every single day. But yeah, make sure they use ceramic tools, and a heat protectant like the previous folks said. From the looks of it, you take good care of your hair, so heat damage should be the least of your worries :-)

  • I'd say straighten a little bit then look at the bit you did and then decide if you really want to straighten it. Heat damage is real and you can control the situation if you do it yourself. You know how some people are. The curlier it is the straighter they seem to want to get it. Plus the best heat protectant is only up to 450 and those professional flat irons at the salon can get up to 500+. Who knows for something that goes into an oven. On top of that your hair is beautiful the way it is.

  • Some say that straitening will mess up your natural curl pattern so if you choose to get it straitened make sure that you go to a salon that specializes in natural hair and please tell them us heat protection. Some stylist will just go at it with that comb and don't think nothing of it. Your hair is sooooo beautiful and I am a big fan of it. Don't let um mess it girl.

I would love to see it straightened so I'd say go for it!

  • Your hair is your power don't change it. You look so Beautiful!!!!! that why the ladys are looking at you like that. They don't know how beautiful they could be if they had there powerful hair. God bless

  • Hey cynthia. I haven't flat ironed my hair or blown it out because I am scaaared of heat damage. However, your hair is so awesome...I would love to see your hair BLOWN OUT! It is going to be so HOT! Love ya

  • yes yes yes yes yes yes go for it even if its just one time. just make sure u use heat protectant. i could imagine how beautiful that would look. be sure to post a video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
