  • Why is the masonic eye above ? This is starting to be scary...

  • Best arrangement of this by far that I know is by Brian Trant, superb.

  • i played this is band yesterday for my band concert

  • I think I too often take it for granted that I sing in this choir.

  • DYNAMICS! :OO

  • beautiful....<3

  • We play this in orchestra. I really wanted to hear it with the words and it is sooo pretty!!

  • i love this arrangement of deep river, it's short, but sweet. voices blended well. always gives me goosebumps when i listen to.

  • this song is like sweet chocolate sex

  • Get's me everytime!

  • WOW!!! Bravo, sang beautifully!!

  • this song is ridiculous! its pretty but so hard to sing.

  • sung by a bunch of white people....

  • @LegendsAngel I don't think that the colour of skin is relevant, what counts is the voices and the hearts and minds behind them.

  • @LegendsAngel ....beautifully. :)

  • Awesome Song Did it for a solo to get into college :)

  • i'm doing this song in choir ^^ i'm a soprano, so my notes are all the way up, i get so happy and touched whenever i sing it *-*

  • i played this on tuba im a beast for that

  • this is for my test today, so this is an European Spiritual?

  • @scottobrady African American Spiritual

  • @scottobrady

    @Assassin2102

Technically, it's an African American spiritual.

  • @Assassin2102 i was told this was a negro spiritual

  • VERY VERY GOOD!!

  • Wonderful! I really miss singing in choirs like this.

  • i can listen to this a million times, my eyes still water up

  • thank you. just beautiful :)

  • What happened to the other videos from this performance? I see the other 2 on your page but you had more.

  • I love this song, it is stunning! I'm doing it in choir right now

  • Very Well done...how are these guys not world renowned?!

  • I think this is the best version on youtube. My 7-year-old cousin who i was very close to passed away recently and this was sung at her funeral. I think this choir seems to be the only one who can do it justice.

  • i listen to this song almost every day and i always end up tearing up when i hear 1:38 to the end

  • One of my favorite professors passed away just a few hours ago. "Deep River" was one of her favorite songs. My choir is singing a different version of it and I am singing a solo in it. I'm going to sing it in her honor, carrying my voice all the way up to heaven!

  • Nice work, guys!

  • This is the best version of Deep River I've ever heard! I love Jesus.

  • This is a beautiful song. :)

  • Beautiful!

  • these guys kick the shit outa the high school choir im in lolz. :)

  • fantastique!!!! Je l'aime

  • AMAZING mouth shapes. Perfect vowels. My volume wasn't even all the way up and on the highest/loudest notes, my speakers cracked. Soooo amazing.

  • Ahh I love this piece, sang Jonathon Rathbone's barbershop arrangement of this with Nobody Knows eith my school barbershop group on a tour of New York, and even made some of the audience cry it was so touching :)

  • i sang 2 different versions of this in 2 different choirs and arranged 2 versions of it on guitar... i still love this is song with a passion

  • I love this as a music major getting ready to graduate for choral music and conducting this version touches me. Well done!

  • Negro spirituals and art songs have such an incredible pull at the heart. I sang this song with either an all region or all state choir and it wound itself into the soundtrack of my life. This version is close to the one we sang back then. Thanks for posting.

  • Southwestern college chior sounds alot better

  • hey even we're singing it at school in SWITZERLAND...i love it..

  • Excellent Work! It's possible to share the score arrangement? Cheers from Portugal.

  • Gospehhhhhhhhhhhhhhl

  • ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING! THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

  • This is the best version I've seen so far. We're doing this in my concert choir, and this song really touches me.

  • beautiful !! very nice voices !

  • Good intonation and blend, but I'm just not a fan of the vowel choices, and I've heard much more moving performances of this text.

  • Very nice. Tight, on key. Great dynamics. And I could understand every word.

  • we did this in choir back in 2007. the schools gathered together... it was amazing and it still resounds in my mind... proves that this song has power

  • Absolutely beautiful. Thank you all.

  • But one question:

There's only white people able to sing in this university?

  • Thats nice , very nice

But I would improve mens vioces at "promised land" and lower those women ones

  • i really see anything not to like

  • A beautiful, touching piece of music performed flawlessly. Thx for posting this.

  • beautiful performance. though i'm wondering what is so special about the last chord?

  • We're singing this song in my concert choir. I just think it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. :')

  • In 1924, I posed for another sculpture. It was a nude rock. It depicted me singing DEEP. RIVER.

  • wow......... amazing.

  • LADIES y'all need to not sound like children, get some space in the back of your throat and get more umf. overall pretty good though

  • love this song, great performance

  • Amazing & Awefull !

  • Very beautiful and moving. This choir is very very good. Good balance and emotionality.

  • Whose composition is dis?

  • @GeraldB526

Rene Clausen; my choir is singing this same version.

  • @oxymoronicchic Thanx

  • I don't think that any other interpretation of this song could be more beautiful. It is simply impecable - both technically and emotionally. One of the best videos I ever saw on YouTube.

  • ive just started learning this in choir at the moment and this is almost intimidating lol you guys are amazing!

  • Great sound and voice is played

  • god it must be harder with a faster tempo

  • 1:10 - 1:27... thats whats up.

  • This is an excellent interpretation of this spiritual. It always amazes me when white American choral directors master the art of Spirituals it makes me wonder, what did they experience in order to understand the right texture, timbre, and color of tone of the Negro Spiritual.

  • Perfect Intonation!!!!

  • Singing this for the Pinkerton chorus!

  • this is a beautiful arrangement of a wonderful spiritual can someone please tell me who arranged it? thanks so much and God bless :)

  • wow amazing chorus great voices = )

  • Simply amazing. Hard to imagine a better version than this!

  • Wow, what a great arrangement and song. Just awesome.

  • we did a version of this song arranged by the wonderful Julian Wilkins as part of our City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Family Concert. It had an amazing descant part in it sang by a 15 year old trebble, beautiful

  • goodness, this song makes me cry.

they did an AMAZING job, its beautiful.

  • what?

  • this is awesome. who is the arranger of the piece?

  • @hakkinen001 H. Burleigh

  • This recording is so beautifully realized and affecting that it should draw tears from a stone.

I used to sing in the choir at St. George's Episcopal Church in NYC where H.T. Burleigh was lead bass for over fifty years and always loved singing one of his several perfect arrangements of this spiritual. Probably the experience is even more moving for singers than for listeners.

Printed by Ricordi, his settings helped make this music world famous.

  • hey musicians, I am from Brasil when I was in United states, I did listen that song at Gospel Choir Athens - Hugh Hodgson music scholl, its fantastic and amazing, a song of angels...

  • I love this song we learn this in class and it sounds also nice but this is really beautifull!

  • I haven't heard this in many many years. I'm speechless. Absolutely beautiful.

  • great consonants!

  • bahaha. we played this in orchestra :) the cello part is exquisitely beautiful

  • one of the best choirs ive heard in a while .......we need to get back on that level =)

  • fantastic, except for the kid that over did his vowels (0:44 to 0:51)...... and don't know if anyone else got this feeling but I felt that (1:21 to 1:27) needed somthing extra shouldn't have ended that way to lead into the last verse

  • Hey, I'll take whatever works if it results in a choral performance as good as this one...

  • amen to that

  • it's one of the saddest songs ever

  • I agree. On the one hand, it is warming to think that this beautiful song gave solace to the slaves who sung it, but on the other hand, I am saddened by the pain that led those same people to seek any refuge, any escape, no matter how simple, from their hopeless circumstances.

  • Simply, Superb and Beautiful!

  • who is the composer/arranger of this version? it is AMAZING!

  • Professer Micheal Braz.

I GOT TO MEET HIM AT HONOR CHOIRR!!

  • OMG I LOVE THIS SONG! I am singing this in chorus for our Harvest Concert. I love singing it. It is so beautiful.

  • i'm doing this in choir it touches me i don't know why

  • surely ... it's a deeply emotional spiritual expressing the pains and hopes of struggle

  • @scottobrady bravi

  • so amazing

    greatly moving.

    Wow.

    I love this!

  • Still brings tears to my eyes though I've listened to it several dozen times now.

  • This is so powerful. I am playing this on the piano, but I had never heard it before. I wanted to know the words and get the feel of the piece. What emotion! Thanks!

  • 1:00-1:13 Awesome Tenor part! (almost made me wish I was one... for a second.)

  • amazing..great job!

  • I entirely agree with dareezy. the performance is splendid, and it's so perfect musically and spiritually. and for the most part, I'm going to give a lot of credit to a white choir performing this so well stylistically, because there's a reason why they call it an African-American Spiritual. Us white choirs usually just can't pull this stuff off. but, those spread vowels bring us back to the white choir sound. that classical sound. other than that, it's perfection. congrats! it's very well done!

  • Luv this song!

I wrote some arrangements to it :)

    Very great job.

    Cya

  • Wonderfull! Explendid!

  • This is great! I picked this song to sing for a vocal contest I'm singing in.

    You all sounded amazing!

  • The only thing I would change is for the pronunciation of the second syllable of Jordan, Campground, and Gospel to be less spread. Other than that: Bravo!

  • Right! if you gon do a Spiritual, DO A SPIRITUAL!

  • who arranged this??... its amazing

  • In 2005 I was one of 600 barbershop singers who performed this with the Mormon Tabernacle choir at Salt Lake City. The arrangement was very close to this one. It was arranged by Greg Lyne.

  • 0:49

  • This is so hauntingly beautiful it make me cry every time I hear it. I have loved this song for 50 years, since I was a kid. This is the best version I have every heard! What angelic voices!

  • It's more amazing to see white people singing spiritual so deeply. Nice work!

  • Awesome!

  • wonderful....

  • 1:13... simply amazing

  • This version is incredible. Talk about a beautiful piece executed PERFECTLY! Great Job!

  • My mother loves this song,

  • i love this choir's version of this song it almost makes me want to cry, i hope my coir can sound this good one day

  • Me and my choir preformed this song in Macedonia. This song is used here in Macedonia many times when we have a choir contest and it`s a winning song ;)Thanks for adding this. (sorry for my language)

  • There is much wrong with the conservatism of American Youth - but you cannot fault this superb performance.

  • I signed up for youtube just to comment on this song. With just a few short lines, this song reaches a poignancy that other songs can't touch. Also, the arrangement is gorgeous, especially when you hear the crescendos on the high note. Lastly, I'm not a choir expert by any stretch, but I think the execution by this group is enchanting.

I wonder if the people in this choir had any idea that they would create something so beautiful that would live on and on.

  • What a great compliment, thank you! We always performed with the understanding that the music was lasting. Though this particular performance was only one of many, each has a permanent fixture in the lives of those listening.

  • You're very welcome, and thanks goes to you and the rest of the choir for this lovely piece.

  • wow that one guys face at like :45 secs in to like 52 secs lol

  • Haha, but you are right about the face (sorry Nathaniel)

  • ugh i hate all the echoing of the t's ugh lol

  • Ha, that's just quality diction. You sing in a sloppy choir? haha

  • Great Job. This was wonderfly executed.

  • We did a little different version of this song for a competition in St. Louis one year but we did it with nothing but Sopranos & Altos...it was all girls baby! We did so good with it too!! But his one sounds & looks really good!

  • Great! I love this song. I sing deep river with my choir too.

  • very nice song!!!!!!!love this

  • ok so this is how u sing it

im singing it in my choir as well

  • Oooh...this gave me pure chills. If my choir could sing Deep River with as much beauty and emotion as this choir, I think my life would be temporarily complete.

  • Awesome sound and energy!!!

  • Great! Awesome! Brilliant! The best version of Deep River I've ever heard! Especially that part from 1:00! Very impressive :) IWe also started to learn it with our choir, but I don't think we will be so brilliant :D... soo - great job...I love it! :P

  • Great performance and a great choir: ) I like your expressions - you look so lively it makes me envy a little bit; ) We started learning the song this year too.

  • Me encanta esta obra, aunque nunca canté esta versión coral. Felicidades.

  • look at 0:50 haha looks like he's gonna heave.

  • we sang this in 7th grades all district choir! i loved this song! i love the guys part [my part]!!!! very lovely you all sound amazing!!!

  • wow can u put the tenor paper . i have a chorus xam now!!!

    and its beautiful

  • beautifull.

  • Beautiful!!! Is there somebody who can send me the arrangment???PLEASEE

  • i have noticed choral grous look wierd when they sing...they look like puppets! my chorus looks like that too

  • who was this arranged by? any one know? and killer tenor at 1.05... and i'm a bass who doesn't care for tenors much...

  • umm maybe john leavitt.

  • nice

  • is the last chord a power chord? xx

  • do you know what a power chord is?

  • wow

  • I absolutely LOVE this arrangement. Does anyone have the score? I totally need to do this with my company. Please message me if u have it....so grateful.

  • this is amazing. I'm stunned, dude. This is crazy good.

  • yes renee clausen is the arranger.

  • beautiful, but in a chorale this size, it's easy to cover up poor technique. I mean this in no way to diminish the performance, but choral technique is riddled with issues.... sopranos need to blend a bit more (that's usually a common problem, haha.. I get it too) I do love this song though.

  • Wow! Negro Spirituals are universal!

  • dats sounds like a racial comment!!! hahaha...

  • Thank you. My high school choir of which I was a member sang this in 1973.

  • beautiful

  • extraordinary! you make us feel in heaven

  • 1974, I believe. This song was in memory of Yosh Murakami, and we sang it at his funeral,as his Fargo South High choir.

A huge choir song at the time. I cried as I sang it with the rest of the family, cause he taught me how to do it right.

You will always be in my spirit, Yosh. What an incredible teacher. What an incredible heart.

  • I believe it was Dr. Rene Clausen of Concordia College. I could be mistaken.
