When you click the effect button and it doesn't open. Usually it means that you haven't highlighted(dragging your mouse across it so that there will be a darker color behind it ; the area effected) the recording.Then you can click the effect button to choose stuff. Hope that's better.

I also have the free version(came with my computer). You have to highlight the recording to be able to use the effects section. I hope that works ^ ^
