  • @dcukic An homogeneous stratified charge engine has up to a 15% efficiency increase compared to a direct injection engine. So expect 45MPG econoboxes in a few years.

  • @TheFelixWankel there is a spark plug...under heavy engine loads it switched over to normal operation for higher hp. but once under partial loads it switches over to CI. maybe do some research before hatin on the guy...

  • Yes, thank you Sebas, this is why GM has failed... putting tons of money and time into something that is doomed for failure when there is already a great technology just like this.. diesel.. GM should just build their own diesel and push it, get their heads out of the oils companies back sides..

  • This supposed "HCCI engine" video is reliable? I don't think so...

    As far as I know, the HCCI engines can change to the HCCI mode setting the valves opening and closing, increasing the air proportion and changing the compression rate by a mechanism joined to the crankshaft.

    This engine seems more an standard 16v engine than a DiesOtto engine. Beside, the escape valves close so soon and the admission valves open so late... This engine would have serious running problems, it can't work well.

  • @SebasSBM thats not entirely true. HCCI works by the fuel combusting at exactly the same moment. This is impossible with a typical gas motor because the spark takes time to light the gas mix, then the flam takes time to spread (no matter how small a time that is) HCCI works by compressing the mixture to a precise point where it gets so hot that the entire mix combusts instantaneously. Its almost like making a diesel engine run on gas. Thats honestly easier to compare this motor to than gas.

  • HCCI is trash.

    Slightest bit of wear n tear and/or carbon build up in the combustion chambers and you have erratic Ignition/Combustion.

  • This system sounds like it would be prone to pre-detonation. Also, by trapping exhaust in the cylinder, the oxygen content will decrease, reducing the rpm range for naturally aspirated engines.

  • Being direct injection they can control the temp of the cylinder a bit more

  • Biggest problem with HCCI in general is the fact that you're talking about auto-ignition of an air-fuel mixture. This is an extremely fussy thing with narrow margins of operation and it's really sensitive to air-fuel ratios, air temperature, cylinder temperature, air composition/altitude, engine load, RPM, etc.

    A very tiny error can mean early combustion or no combustion at all. Spark combustion, at least, gives you ignition timing control, and diesel controls it by injector timing.

  • The modern diesels does this very well, but the engine must be build and controlled like an diesel wich this probobly is.

    A diesel has bigger margins with Air/fuel mixtures then an spark ignited gas engine.

    The temperature is controlled in modern high power diesels by adding fuel to cool it down just like in racecars.

    Dont see the point in HCCI when there are diesels.

    Though this should work fine with ethanol wich is about 104 RON and then it is enviromentally friendly (in a way).

    this type of engine does NOT use a spark plug.. it compresses the gas to the point that it just spontaneously combusts. such high compression rates, plus the untimely ignition will result to quick wear in the engine

  • What are you talking about? This is nothing like EGR. HCCI allows a gas engine to operate on a diesel cycle.

  • marooncorsa is asking a good question. Do not forget compression. Diesels are running high compression - 18.8 to 1 f.ex and gas engines are running low 11:1 with direct injection only to prevent detonation in gas engines. Increase compression and you'll get high efficiency. If you want to see the effect of compression try tuning 2 strokes motorcycles.

  • why dont they produce a compression ignition engine that runs of petrol? just the same as diesel, BUT lower the octane and INCREASE Cetane with additives? On a diesel engine, the driver controls a fuel pump which alters the amount of fuel injected into the engine. On a gasoline car we merely control the air with a butterfly valve. AIR IS FREE. FUEL IS NOT. lets stop controlling the air and get on with controlling the fuel. Isnt that the main reason why diesels mostly get good mileage?

  • Not entirely. Diesel fuel contains more energy per unit than gasoline. Compression Ratios are higher which also adds to it being as efficent as it is.

  • Well, No, The main reason for Diesel engines getting much better mileage is the fuel it self, gasoline has about 7600 kcal per liter while a diesel has about 8470 kcal per liter which allowes the diesel engine to make more torque/power out of the same amount of fuel than gasoline engine.

  • Another reason is that the diesel engine is more efficient. But you cant control the gasoline engine's output the same way as a diesel engine because the amount of air must be between 9-20 kg per kg of gasoline (14.8 kg being the most efficient) and using the same way as a diesel engine, this ratio would exceed those limits and not being the most ideal for most of the time.

  • GM is already more efficient than Toyota or Honda. Cobalt, more efficient than civic or corolla. Malibu, more efficient than Accord or Camry. Silverado, Tahoe, Uplander, HHR, ect ect.

  • Another great claim to the increase in efficiency is the elimination of a throttle(s) for pumping losses. In order to eliminate a throttle you need to control the intake valve. Are the automotive companies using systems like BMW's valvetronic? Or is it something else?
