The idea and image of a black American in the White House is a really powerful and beautiful image. KRS is right; the image of a black man as President can upend a lot of the prejudices we have. I was living in North Philly when Obama was elected, and when it was clear he won, black folks were out on the street, banging out beats on trash cans and I heard a guy saying, smiling, "a black man is the president!" I had never seen that kind of hope and happiness in north philly before, it was amazing
