criss, or whatever your name is, conrail6370 is right. the NKP 587 has an Augor on it too. ive seen it work. where is no "conveyor belt". lots of extra parts and money and maintenence to keep it up
besides the one at the franklin institute which moves back a few feet and forward a few feet plus i just use the throttle brake and whistle when the firemen just turns the augor handle
here is how to locomotive at the franklin institute got coal in the fire box before it got there
Coal would fall through a trap door When the Augor handle is turned to the right
then The Coal is sent on to a conveyor belt into an elevator Which is a conveyor belt going up with small steel awnings Which when it tips over the coal drops in the firebox
Criss, you don't know anything about an Augor. An augor is a large screw that is in the bottom of the tender. The augor crushes the coal into fine pices and steam jets blow it into the firebox, with control vavels in the locomotive cab on the fireman side. I have ran steam in my life I know.
i know your right about an augor and im not trying to argue. ( making that clear) but if thats an aurgor..whats the stoker? or is that the same thing. just in differnt words?
Augor, stoker, screw it's all means same thing. It's a long screw in the bottom that crushes the coal in to fine pices and steam jets blows it into the fire box.
Yes, Eric I do. I got to know the engineer's of Strasburg from being a memeber of the Friends of The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. And two I been going to Strasburg for many many years.
At 1:24, he's trying to turn off the air rocker but it won't turn off. Then at 1:34 it turns off. Why is it doing that? Was the lever stuck or something?
It's not actually tight inside, it's just that the control wall is bought out further than most steam engines. there's still plenty of space for the fireman to sit or the rider.
Thank you all for your comments. This video clip is part of a production I did of Strasburg, and is for sale over on my video website. Go to the profile and you'll see the link to the web site.

Does being an engineer for a steam railroad pay a lot?
It doesn't matter to me, I'd still love to be one! And one question.
How do you become a member of the friends of the railroad museum?
Also, Len, have you ever considered becoming an engineer?
NWRRSteamPower 3 years ago 3
Do you know these engineers as much as you know the Reading engineers?

Are those sunglasses that Doc's wearing? Or are those just eye protection goggles?

Doc is wearing sun glasses, he wears them all the time, it's sorta his trade mark.

Well, if you get one in 475 it'd have to be this summer or later, because she won't be running till she finishes getting repaired.
NWRRSteamPower 3 years ago
Steam engineers are cool.
GWRRSteamPower 3 years ago
And please can you get a cab ride in No. 475? it's my favorite strasburg engine. I'm also Aprincechild and NWRRSteamPower.
GWRRSteamPower 3 years ago
I don't think I'll be able to get one in 475. but I'll try this year. I have been in 31/7312 twice.
Len.
Conrail6370 3 years ago
How loud is the whistle when you're in the cab?
GWRRSteamPower 3 years ago
it's not really that loud in the cab, then people might think. it's louder out side of the cab , because your shilded some when in side.
Len.
Conrail6370 3 years ago
Oh please can you try to get a video of No. 475's cab?
NWRRSteamPower 3 years ago
is that easy
toughcanon88 3 years ago
Cool, you should ask for a ride on 475 and post a video of it. It's my favorite strasburg engine. I'm dying to see what it looks like inside!
Aprincechild 3 years ago
It's very tight in side, for it was built during the WWII era. your right smack up agance the back of the fire box.
Len
Conrail6370 3 years ago
It's not actually tight inside, it's just that the control wall is bought out further than most steam engines. there's still plenty of space for the fireman to sit or the rider.
