the term Goth comes from a really long time ago, the term was used for the foreigners in medieval times, then the term was used for the architecture style (THAT DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE GOTH SUBCULTURE, it highlights the use of natural light in spaces), and finally the term is used for the subculture that raises in 19'th century as some working class people that painted their faces really pale to protest. In terms of human beings, the borders of these are labels are even less clear cut. Every human is unique which means they have different facets of personality, they cannot be all goth/punk/metalers. "Goth" was the label put on the bands like Bauhaus and Siouxie and the Banshees because the Joy Division manager used The Goths as a description of how they were compared to mainstream music (meaning to be dark, different and sometimes barbaric). And then there's the term "Gothic" to describe architecture, clothing and aesthetics. To be "gothic" its probably because it's, again, dark, different and sometimes sinister.

Actually, architecture and literature were both part of single cultural movement (or maybe it's better to call it "subculture", despite this term is rarely used to describe movements before it's invention - term subculture was created and defined between 1950-1980, while this original Gothic movement seems to decline after 1900)
And personally - I hail to this former Gothic subculture, rather then to modern one, which i consider pitiful in too many aspects...
@ComodorFalkon Well, certain Gothic Architecture was around long before the gothic literature movement (at least in its most popular days) of the 1800's, since their were gothic castle in the 1500's (and earlier, I do believe). Unless the literature style was around as early as that too, I might be mistaken but I didn't think it was. If I am mistaken, than my apologies on that matter.

It's like stone spine supporting thought fabric, that is somehow independent, but still connected, giving new means for this spin.

Listening to this song, I close my eyes and see the night sky full of stars. It is a great song, fully reflects the depths of sorrow that hides every human, deep inside. I think you can say about this song, that this is exactly "a cry of the soul".

It's already been said, but yes, darkwave is a valid offshoot of the 80's goth rock.
Either way, explain "gothic" and we may agree.
