neil is freekin hot, he is in my top 5 guitarist list. because his style is totally creative and he his one the best (LIVE) .......ive only seen him live twice but those were 2 of my favorite concerts. even when they started gettin away from their rock roots and becoming faggish, neil still kicked ass. IMHO
I wish I could have seen Journey when Greg was still in the band. By the time I saw them in the early 80's, Jonathan had already joined. I love the duos with Greg & Steve!
Thanks for posting this. I was about 13 when Friday's first came on and always thought they had the hippest bands of the time. What a shame the series isn't on DVD, Thanks again
First time I ever seen this. Great performance. Steve Perry is not only the voice of the gods but knows how to get in the crowds head. Seeing him react with the crowd as he does here just makes me want to say Go Steve Go.
Thanks, mariet2 for posting this and so many other great Steve Perry and early Journey vids. Takes some of us back to the best years of our lives. It's such a joy being drawn into Steve's incredible talent, sweetness, happiness, and energy once again! And the best part is that he is so NOT into himself. What a sweet baby he is, then and always!
@LoveSweetSteveP If anyone should have been into himself it was Steve back then considering his amazing singing voice, song writing abilities and the fact it was him and him alone that made Journey get radio play.Him not being that way shows the kind of man he is compared to certain remaining members of this band even today.I think you can really tell from videos like these that Steve is a caring man who loved making a live audience happy and that one of his main priorities was to entertain them.
@thorobredfan Looks Like Sherrie Swafford his girlfriend of 5 1/2 years to me. This video was around 1979. He joined Journey in 1978. His daughter Shamila was born in the early 70s. So I think he would of had to have met Sham's mother before this time period.
Thanks for the great post! This was the same sequence they used on Captured except 'Walks' went into Schon's guitar solo and segued directly into LaDoDa - which eventually ended in a drum solo by........... Ah......Steve Smith!
Back to 'Walks Like A Lady', how many drummers can make the brushes sound so good that it actually fits in a Rock- n-Roll band? Not many! Steve Smith is the man! This was my favorite Journey line up. They were kick ass here! Awesome post, very, very cool!
This was Journey at its artistic peak, IMHO. Before "Escape" took them in a more pop-oriented direction, this was still solidly blues-based AOR rock with a heavy groove. Perry could do whatever he wanted with that voice and still had plenty to give. The recordings from this tour (1980's "Departure" Tour) are truly amazing!
@eze1417 I liked what Jon brought to the group, but I prefered what they had before they moved in that direction. They rocked harder and were more of a classic rock band instead of a pop rock band. Jon never provided them with the same vocal ability and depth that they had before and his playing did not have as much bluesy grit as Gregg's. They became far more polished in sound with Jon and that fit the 80's well, I suppose.
fridays was an abc version of saturday night live but (obviously) on friday night. it wasnt on very long but they had some great acts as u can see. video from this show is extremely rare
Now, finally, some of Journey that is just so f__king real. One of the best bands ever assembled. Steve Perry made Journey! But the band is totally awesome in its entirity.
OMG that was awsome! Thank you for sharing... Do you have any more videos from this show? Would love to see them... (I can't remember if they were on every Friday night or occasional Friday nights... ) Thank you!
This shows Journey moving into a new phase...No more gay clothes for Steve, Gregg lost his stache, Neil has New wave clothes-no stache-shorter hair, Steve Smith as replaces Dunbar and Schon is playing some funky riffs
This is a sure gem how ever did you find it Mariet2? This is When Journey was HOT! Smoking Hot! Shame on you Herbie for ever saying that Steve don't look at the Audience,The proof is right here you Herbie Herbert!
STEVE ROCKS IT! Incredible performance where Steve KICKS IT across the stage and into the audience. It's like watching a bunny do BINKIES -- SHEER JOY @5:10! When I've had a bad day (or want to ward off one), all it takes is a little PERRY FIX.
How delightful! It's so fantastic that these old performances are still around -- they rock SO totally, and Stevie ... we love you, babe. Still and always. :-)
my my my Steve was just DELICIOUS, the band was ROCKIN', everyone seemed so happy! I am SO GLAD they left all of these videos and music to bring us back to that time of MAGIC. Seems like it was yesterday! Steve is MAGNETIC!!
If you love The Voice as much as I do, then go to votenumber1 (with the usual beginning and ending) and vote for Steve Perry as #1 male rock singer of all time. You can vote once a day. It's the least we can do after all the years he's given us!
Funny to think Larry David was writing on this show at the time and was yet to unleash Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Andy Kaufman a regular cast member-Anyway,Steve Perry is amazing and this band was unstoppable at this time...
