Excellent video. It's exactly what I was looking for. I was originally looking at the K & N then because of the cost I was leaning towards the Fram but after seeing your video I've decided to go back to K & N.
Thanks for putting the time (and investing in the 4 filters just to cut them up!) I have often wondered about this and though K&N filters cost more I love them because of the nut on the bottom, so simple but so brilliant. I now know that the inside of the filter is a really good unit too.
Thank you for this video which reflects "visually" what other experts have found i.e. that FRAM filters are very cheaply made.
Years ago (over 20) Fram had good products; unfortunately once they made it, with time, greed, profit, and general lack of concern for consumer brought us this sad American "spec'ed" unsat filter under the familiar orange can.
Thank you for your demo, very well made and very convincing!
K&N claims to use a synthetic filter material rather than paper (not talking about the end caps. I always wondered if this was true... The only filters that I KNOW for sure use synthetic material is AmsOil, but they don't make one in the correct size for my car. I've been using K&N over Wix (Wix is an AmsOil brand) because of the synthetic material. I was just wondering if you could confirm or deny the synthetic material or if you even noticed a difference. I can't tell from the video.
i changed my oil today and took a napa filter off and put a fram on and this makes me want to change my oil all over again. good thing i have a frantz bypass filter to:)
K&N and mobil 1 are supposed to be almost identical except for the K&N heavier case on them. I used to use pure 1 almost exclusively, theyr'e supposed to filter the best (from everything i've read) but the last couple times i bought one, the new grippy, sand impregnated paint seems to be all over the inside of the filter. like a sandy, powdery substance that gets all over the inside of the box that it comes in and also gets into the clean side of the filter when in the box.
Great video. I like to see comparisons of product not done by one of the manufacturers so there is not influence or thoughts of influence on the product. Really enjoyed the video…
It is better to buy a more expensive filter such as a K&N than a cheap ass Fram.. I know that I will NEVER buy Fram oil filter EVER again. However their air filters are good.
@wheely132 if their oil filters are that crappy and poorly made do you think the air filter is going to possibly be any better it'll probably starve your engine of air.
A seal around the bypass valve might be a point but since all filters lack a seal on the end caps it doesn't really matter. All the filters you show do not have end cap seals and all the other oil filters on Youtube do not have them either it really is not an issue. Plus the bypass valve on the Wix fits nice and snug and not sloppy. I think for the price the Wix filters are the best buy.
There actually is a couple other differences between Napa ProSelect and Gold that you didn't mention. 1) The ProSelect uses a nitrile anti-drainback valve and the Gold uses a silicone anti-drainback valve which holds up better to temperature changes and doesn't become as brittle as nitrile. 2) The center tube on the ProSelect is a strait tube and the Gold has a spiraled center tube which helps to improve oil-flow and provides a little more structural support to the filter media.
@awl2028 ((( andy49093 ))) You can see the other comments you are just repeating them. If you can do the video better please do. other wise stick to the beer thanks
@jones1inc Well I wasn't trying to be rude, I only had a brief time to watch and didn't have time to check the other comments. I also was not criticizing your video, only that there were a couple other differences (again, when I was on earlier I didn't have a lot of time to read comments). I also don't appreciate the condescending remark implying that I'm stupid about cars because I do beer reviews. I'll have you know my father was a mechanic for years and I'm going to college to become one.
@awl2028 I apologize! Usually when people setup 2 accounts like that, (besides you) they usually use 1 of there accounts to harass people on there video's. Thanks for watching.
@jones1inc Well the awl2028 account is older than my andy49093 account. I set up the other for my beer reviews and intended for this one to be for personal use (things besides beer reviews), but never got around to really uploading anything on here. I do not use it for trolling like you might have thought.
There IS a difference between the orange anti drain back valve and the black one the orange one is made from silicone the black one is nitrile the orange silicon is better why?,, because it performs /seals more effectively in cold temps also with doing long oil change intervals,it stays more flexible so it can do it's job of sealing the oil in the can.
the standard black one can get stiff and un ply able over time and not seal very efficiently thus letting oil seep back out of the can.
Actually, the ADBV differs more than just in colour.. the black one is made of lower quality nitrile rubber as opposed to the more flexible and longer lasting orange silcone variety. :)
@pjtart I am an employee at napa so pardon me if i sound a bit bias, but anything is better than fram (other than maybe stp) Frams cardboard caps give a horrible seal and breakdown easily. Napa(wix) is the best bang for your buck, as you can see they arent top of the line like k&n but they usually cost about half as much. I would trust wix in any of my vehicles
@adamcc91 Thanks for the information, i believe that too that the Napa oil filters are good bang for the buck. I was using Fram oil filters and than i heard it was bad for the vehicle i did some research and i heard that you had better oil filter so i went and bought one and they are great. Wix oil filters are great.
@VDRun1988D they don't have to, sales back up their product. Most stores have predominately Fram for sale and little of anything else, if any. There are worse filters out there... champion Ecore filters are surprisingly worse. I chopped one up and posted a vid (supertech filter)

K&N FILTERS are by far the better ones to use for oil...Nappa are second only to K&N and only a fool buys FRAM which as everyone knows is an anagram:
F Frequently
R Repairs
A Are
M Massive

Good Review, the only point id like to say is the reason the spring is replaced by the l plate is to increase the space for the filtration element.
