I don't need a ten minute history lesson before the song!! Video description should read: One Full Minute of Silence followed by the shreddings of Dick Dale. Thanks but I'm gonna watch Burl Ives version now.
I saw Dick Dale I think in 93 at the Santa Monica Pier for the first time and he put on a killer show and I've been converted since then. Have all his records and truly appreciate his style of guitar player.
In 1970 while on counter duty as an Auto Club salesman in the Garden Grove office of the AAA, I worte the auto insurance for a young Dick Dale on his Rolls Royce that he kept at his Palm Springs club. The AAA didn't like 'target risks' and never would have insured Dick Dale under any circumstances but we simply used his real name and they never knew. I insured a man named Richard Monsour aka Dick Dale.
The version Grady Martin did on a no-speak album from the mid late 70's sounded very similar...not quiet as good. Sadly my copy of that LP went up in a house fire...it's not on the net either. 8^( Ah well I like version better anyways.
I don't like this version that much. I prefer the original arrangement, but this is still pretty cool. I am disappointed that Dick Dale is still claiming he invented surf in the 1950s. That's just patently untrue. He played doo wop until 1961.
@theoldgalah If you are saying I'm wrong because I like another version better than his, that's fine. However if you are saying Dick Dale actually invented surf music in the 1950s you are wrong. His earliest singles were the vocals, Ooh-Whee Marie and Stop Teasing were rockabillyesque doo wop songs released in 1959. In 1960 he released another doo wop song Jessie Pearl. He didn't release Let's Go Trippin' until 1961, months shy of The Belairs' Mr. Moto.
@Thorbie Thanks for setting that straight. Libba Cotton was playing a guitar left handed strung right handed when Dick was in diapers, so the sight of someone playing like this was nothing remotely new to a man like Leo. I have some friends who play this way too. Its a matter of convenience. Link Wray had started the Surf instrumental form from Rockabilly in the mid 50s, and this style hails from the mid-west, not California. The style was adopted by the surf crowd, and the history got twisted.
Dick and Jimi were good friends before Hendrix made the music scene. Hendrix picked up his future legendary style from Dick. They remained good friends up until Jimi's death. A few years before his death Dick had been diagnosed with rectal cancer. After finding out Jimi wrote and dedicated the song third stone from the sun to Dick. Shortly after pulling through impossible odds Jimi passed away. To this very day every concert Dick plays and rededicates the song to his lost friend.
This version has to be from the 70s after Hendrix came on the scene. DD did a version of this song in 63 but very different. This song even has some punk rock in it.
Fantastic.
DD may be the "King of the Surf Guitar" but he is also the "Father of Heavy Metal."
Thanks for the info. It was clear that this had to be after at least the mid 70s. There's no doubt that Hendrix, like every other rock guitarist, was influenced by DD, but you can hear in this song that DD was also influenced by Hendrix and punk rock.
I like the Duane Eddy version best of GR best. So who came firstt "The 'Chicken or the Egg'?
Eddy or Dale.
what's wrong with putting a few facts out about a video.
Most people have no idea who they are anyways.
BTW I sent dick dale a email a few months back and he
replied to me the very same day. I thought that was informative and very nice of him.

Dick dale was honored last Wednesday in the Orange County Hall Of Fame.
He was the creator of "Surf Music" and a native son of Orange County.
Leo Fender , creator of the Fender guitar was also a native of Orange County.
He is buried in Santa Ana, and his grave stone is a Fender guitar.

@Cyberella1000 Dick Dale was born in Boston MA, not Orange County CA. Heard it from his mouth 2 days ago. Google it.

They HAVE to put Dick Dale in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame! He's become one of those individuals whose talent is now unquestionable.

Im pretty sure jimi hindrix didn't copy him because jimi hindrix did it because he didnt have a left handed guitar so he played it how ever he could.

Dick Dale is one of the most accomplished guitarists, and most accomplished Strat players, in the history of electric guitar.
The Strat was invented in 1954, so Dick Dale was way ahead of the pack.
And, dig his take on a country/western standard.
And, he's another brilliant leftie!
He's fabulous.
