Was he hitting the guard rail around corners? If so, then I think the game is more about keeping it clean than strictly time.

You don't necessarily need to brake if you shift correctly. Downshifting can slow you down more gracefully and allow you to redline it through the turn so you're ready to shift back up as soon as you're out. Braking does just what brakes do, slow you down.

Braking slows you down faster... giving you a faster time. If you just downshift to decelerate then you're taking longer to slow down

it all depends on your technique and the kind of car you're driving, fwd, awd, rwd (its different for all of them)

test some different braking strategies, what feels the best for you (and wouldnt throw you over the guardrail in real life)

On Iro. i used to just tap the brake three times around corners, but i tap it three times before i get to certain corners, and then jam it to the floor and throw the wheel over (some may think its crazy)

Its just depends on what feels comfortable really...

i like smaller cars for iro, cuz for the 3rd sequential jump you can jump it alot earlier if you have a smaller car, i.e. the cappu, and the rx-8

jerk is the re-centering motion of the steering wheel after erasing. watch closely how the mighty HKS re-center the steering wheel before full-turning the wheel. (right after erasing). note that the step 3 and 4 that i had posted is not to be used on some "very tight" turns in irohazaka like the first pin since these pins (turns) needs very early breaking.

1. feint (out)

2. steering wheel to inner direction + eraser

3. release gas + break if needed

4. jerk (recenter the wheel)

5. full turn

watch how HKS do these steps.

on the first jump after the big 1, eraser on 3 and turn into it, 2nd jump you shift from 3 to 2 and eraser if u can, and the 3rd 1 wall ram into it on gear 3 or 2, and the last 1 eraser and floor it. i think thats how you do it.

You go to 2nd gear on the first corner for 2 reasons. 1. It slows the car down much faster than going down to 3rd, and if it can slow down faster you can stay at your higher speed much longer. 2. It creates more oversteer than just shifting down to 3rd. enabling you to whip the back end more easily. Thus, increasing your exit speed.
