Too much tech for beginners. DJ's nowadays can't even beat match anymore. Learn how to beat match, learn how to mix without loops and extras, then play around with the toys. Without the fundamentals down there is no way to become a master dj.
awesome explanation man... quick question. I'm kinda new in the dj world so bear with me. How would you transition from one song to another if there is a very significant difference in BPMs.?like from 128 to 120 or the other way?
@cod7strats I totally agree man. lol...But music is my thing. I can play the piano, drums, guitar, bass guitar and a little bit of sax. Got the hang of djing too the first day I got my software and equipments. I just didn't know how to the pros do it because despite of my talents in music, I am still a beginner at djing.
@jakerussel Glad you do... Didn't mean to be offensive towards you :) But yeah you have to know exactly what's happening in your songs so you can be ready for anything. If a song is too different of a beat to match evenly or well, try the first manoeuvre here (Hip Hop Slam) which is actually really effective if placed in between beats on two songs.
Question: For Mix #4 how do you know when its 16 counts left for the chorus to end? Do you really have to know the songs that well? Seems kind extreme when dealing with many types of music to be able to do know exactly when to deactivate loops like that. Great video btw!
On TRAKTOR Scratch Pro 2 I got only like 6 effects and I'm watching these videos and they have a big list of effects and I'm wondering where I can get them because I really need these please reply back!
I do hiphop and have instrumental versions of each track i have. I scratch drop all my tracks in as well. When the 1st hook hits on the active song, i throw in the instrumental version of the next song and let it play until the end of the 2nd hook, then while just the instrumental is playing, i get the version with words and scratch over it for a couple measures before i drop it in. This is a good setup for doing double copy tricks like looping, stuttering and beat juggling during the set.
How the do I do a micro drum roll on my 1210s and scratch mixer? I've looked everywhere but I can't see the button. It also doesn't tell me how many bars I got left. In fact it pretty much tells me fuck all.. Seriously though - that aint mixing, it looks more like you're pleasuring a female robot (with blue titties) ;-)
fine tutorial, would have been nice to use some tracks that didn't sound like noise. hard to tell that he was actually mixing anything. but the technical points were great.
@DJZombieChipmunk ....Damn I downloaded this program and it downloads my controller map settings but when I run the program it says my midi controller isn't hooked up???
your awesome dude that was seriously so helpful! your droping some serious knowledge! screw the rest of these shity djs trying to pass dribble off as advice!
@DeagleGold Breakdown is the part in the song before the drop/chorus where everything gets slower and much of the song is minimalized or stripped down. Y'know, when everyone puts their hands in their air, anticipating some crazy shit
I guess everyone that is afraid to show creative talent hides behind easily trainable skills like beat matching instead of critiquing creativity and/or bringing something better to the table.
Why many people thinks that´s stupid when using the sync button? The technology is made to makes the things better, i enojy when i see a dj using players or make live act with computers, every thing we have to makes the things better or diferent. The music is a feeling it does not matter what are your toys, if you can make some original and creative is fine to the music!
@toeknee691 I don't see sync as being a big deal, to me i just see it as giving the DJ more room/time to be creative with other aspects of their set. I dont see it as being "no skill" but if you sync and you still suck then yeah that's bad. To me most scratching sounds boring and repeatative, but everyone has different preferences
I have a question, that thing you were doing on the left side while tapping the cue button (0:33). How do I do that with VirtualDJ without starting a cue loop (meaning, how do I set the cue so that it won't loop), or should I just crossfade to the other song really quickly?
I have a question, that thing you were doing on the left side while tapping the cue button. How do I do that with VirtualDJ without starting a cue loop (meaning, how do I set the cue so that it won't loop), or should I just crossfade to the other song really quickly?

I understand this of course, I was just wondering, how exactly do you know its 16 counts to the end of the song, hasn't got there yet, you can't count into the future?

heyyy dude yourr vidds are beast i watch all of them n i learned som much stuff thanxss broo n if you gett time can u please do a video about genres and songs that are good for clubb mixes thanks broo take care
Is there any way you can do this digitally? i mean without the controller, only with the mouse and keyboard?? Cause dj softwares for pc are pretty good, but having only the mouse on your disposal, the things you can do are very limitated!! Sry my english sucks!!
This might be great for beginners. But none of these methods are smooth. In my opinion you can practice these methods but only to experiment with. Personally I always try to make the mix as smooth as possible to a point where the audience (or even myself) cannot tell that 2 tracks are even being mixed! There are many ways of doing this but it takes time and experience.
All of you aspiring dj's, remember this: It's NOT about the DJ, it's about the music!Learn music FIRST, then learn technique!
I agree with you. I'm just starting out and I enjoy mixing deep house and these effects would spoil the vibe. Would you mind shedding some light on techniques you have in mind? Tips on learning an exponentially large library would be awesome too! Cheers
I've been doing Chorus blend FOREVER where I take an 8 bar intro loop of the new track and SLOWLY (probably about a 3 minute transition) transition over
@oOlivindonutsOo you can either count it for yourself and set the cue points accordingly OR even more easily set the marker in the track in traktor at the right position without playing the track. because traktor shows you how many counts - or + you move the marker, you can set it at 8 or 16 or ... you can even drop a loop at the beginning of the track with 8 / 16 / ... bars and look where it ends to set an according cue point. there are many ways in traktor to accomplish things
Hey I´m uing Traktro pro 2 and where ean has his yellow stuff that indicated where the beats and sounds are I only have weird ulrared waves! How can I change that??????
@iclickbarksin You have to create a CUE POINT....however, you can download the file form the original djtechtools page where the MP3 demo file of these songs come already with them.
Seriously, Do you think John Digweed is not a real dj ?
Hernan Cattaneo ?? Zabiela ?? The list goes on forever.

nice video, always good to see some basic dj knowledge so well demostrated in a youtube video. technique 5 isn't exactly a regular basic techninque but that's pretty awesome use for a digital setup and one that i'm sure we'll be seeing more of being used.
@BtrayinMF I think this is done because the total level of the mix has to be very well controlled...this is very noticeable with good equipments or large PAs
@BtrayinMF If youve ever played for a decent crowd you'll learn how boring you are if you stand there all stiff as you expected him to, part of being a DJ is having a great energy you can give to the crowd and being dramatic like so is a great start, and it also shows passion
@bluex217 Yes i play in front of crowds, no im not stiff i do dance while djing but you just said it even better that he is dramatic and i dont mean it in a good way so if you like to look at a dj that looks like he is getting shocked every time he moves a fader or turns a knobs then thats what you like, every one is not going to like the same shit
@BtrayinMF I agree its preference but taking what you said, not everyone is going to like the same shit that is precisely why I replied to waht you said i dunno it just sounded like you were negatively criticizing his style as u said you dont mean it in a good way well, not everyone is going to like the same shiz :P
@iTallented and if i was a dick rider like you holding eons nutsack i would agree but since im not i dont like it not that i dont like the mans mixes its dope i just dont like how he looks like hes having a fucking turrets attack while twisting knobs and shit
@djlastlaugh if you're using traktor and you have bpmed the track you can move forward and backwards by however many bars at a time by using the MOVE mode of the advanced deck controls (the down arrow under the loop bar, where you set cues and grids)
@djlastlaugh I'd say you have to prepare your tracks before...this involves creating the CUE points, at least in the tracks where you are going to try difficult mixes like this. Counting is a matter of knowing the song, watching the screen and zooming....also a DJ controller like the S4 or my Xone4D will have a jog dial to move forward and backwards very fast to mark CUE points every 4, 8 or 16 beats.

@BtrayinMF I agree its preference but taking what you said, not everyone is going to like the same shit that is precisely why I replied to waht you said i dunno it just sounded like you were negatively criticizing his style as u said you dont mean it in a good way well, not everyone is going to like the same shiz :P

@djlastlaugh if you're using traktor and you have bpmed the track you can move forward and backwards by however many bars at a time by using the MOVE mode of the advanced deck controls (the down arrow under the loop bar, where you set cues and grids)

Is there an easy way to measure how many bars away something is, Besides counting or setting the looper.
?
djlastlaugh 9 months ago
@djlastlaugh I'd say you have to prepare your tracks before...this involves creating the CUE points, at least in the tracks where you are going to try difficult mixes like this. Counting is a matter of knowing the song, watching the screen and zooming....also a DJ controller like the S4 or my Xone4D will have a jog dial to move forward and backwards very fast to mark CUE points every 4, 8 or 16 beats.
