I'm sure we all watched the 30 hornets vs 30000 honey bees video. I'm a little confused. 30 to 30000 is just as insignificant as 1 to 30000, why couldn't the hive defend itself against 30? If portions of the hive were to swarm and overheat each of the 30 hornets, wouldn't they have died as well? I'm confused now...

its a japanese hornet, and it's not dumb. these are evolved honey bees, they swarm the single scout hornet before it released it's pheromones so other hornets don't come.

The "why" of them bothering to kill it at all is where you are correct.

When the hornet used it's dufour's gland to mark territory for future attacks they immediately kill it.

A hive or nest has a group smell of the queen (and a group stomach.) Anything alien to that is expelled or is killed automatically - even one of their own.

One of these attacks involves the cooperation of around 500 of them (100 prepare the ambush). Assuming that there ARE 3,000 fighting bees, they could actively be fighting 6 attackers at a time. Assuming the bees are able to orchestrate such a massive attack, all the while they would be taking HEAVY casualties both from the risks of the attack and the unoccupied raiders.

No, a bee still dies when it stings anything. The bees in this video weren't stinging the wasp, they were raising their body temperature until the wasp died of overheating. The highest temperature a bee can tolerate is slightly higher than that of a wasp.
