I haven't see that many good viola players and I think that is because there aren't that many good viola teachers... hehe. There are some exceptional viola players though and they can play the violin better than I can ._.
Bueno, pero creo que ese tipo de accidentes te da más confianza... Lo que por lo general piensas es "Ya la fregaste" (No fue tu culpa) pero si sigue el concierto con otro instrumento lo harías con mas ganas.
@sijas Well the sound post could have gotten messed up, but then again I am a bassist and I don't know exactly how sensitive the sound post is for the viola. I could imagine it's not as sensitive as a bass. I bet placing the bridge piece is quite a tedious process though.
wow, he handled that beautifully. no doubt its a multi-thousand dollar instrument. i would have been screaming "shit, fuck, MY INSTRUMENT!" and he shrugs it off. id be gon apeshit.
oh yea, and the playing before it happened gave me goosebumps. i need to hear the rest of this song...
@NarutoAddictNTF It seems like a tailpiece malfunction, most likely the "tailgut" broke or came loose. Very simple repair that can be done in the field. Nonetheless, funny as hell!!!
@NarutoAddictNTF Professional musicians just simply do not go out on a gig without essential spare parts on hand such as extra strings, bridges, etc. Many even carry spare instruments so they can finish the show without much interruption.
@NarutoAddictNTF I've been playing music for over 35 years and worked with countless fiddlers/violinists and upright basses in country and bluegrass bands. They come well prepared, and so do I. Even at the beginner level, it would be foolish to do otherwise! Some of my favorite on the classical end: Yo Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Yuri Bashmet to name a few.
How was it like to live a life like that? I really wish to join the world of music. *Eyes sparkles* Too bad I cannot. xD Then do you know Ben Chan and Ji Youn Kim? I only knew Yo Yo Ma when I searched for the song "Prelude". That one's the best cello piece to me so far. =D
@NarutoAddictNTF First of all, you need a "day job" unless you really make it big-time in music (which I didn't-yet). nice to do for extra income, can be tiring, but a lot of fun. My main instruments are pedal steel guitar, 5-string banjo, resonator (dobro) guitar. I've played them in numerous genres and settings. Lately though it's pretty much a hobby for me--a good one at that, with potential benefits. I still take on paying gigs and benefit concerts as they become available.
@NarutoAddictNTF Log onto stillhousepickers(dot)com. They are the latest of dozens of acts I worked with over the years. In some of the pictures I am playing a Dobro resonator guitar-(played with a steel slide and the fretboard facing up) I am also playing banjo in one of the photos. It's fun and we get to meet a lot of people. Though I never made it to the major leagues, I've rubbed elbows with many top performers from Nashville, Branson, Wheeling and even from abroad. Memories galore!!
@NarutoAddictNTF Just to clarify, Yuri Bashmet is playing the viola, which is somewhat bigger than a violin and tuned a fifth lower. The violas provide the essential middle voice in an orchestra's string section (between the violins and cellos). A few very gifted players like Yuri have brought the viola into the spotlight as a highly effective solo instrument. The viola being played in the video is likely his very rare and valuable Paolo Testore built in the 1750's. Yuri can really make it sing!
There's another violist I know who is talented. He has a band with a violinist. They both combine songs of all sorts into one song. It would be great if all the talented musicians can be together to make a great music!
Is it true when people say that violists are usually not respected as much as other instrument players? =o (Which is unfair for them to be treated that way!)
There's nothing embarrassing about it-- it's an equipment malfunction and it is in no way a reflection of the player's skill. By the way, that player-- Yuri Bashmet-- is one of the two or three greatest living violists.
This is a common occurrence: the tailgut—a little cord that attaches the ebony tailpiece to an endbutton—popped. This usually happens with older-style tailguts which are actually made from gut cord. The heat of the player's neck eventually wins out and they do that. A minor repair, but inconvenient! Modern ones are nylon and don't tend to do this.
i think you'll find the person who posted this titled it "violin accident" with a double meaning- they meant that it's also an accident that "violin" is in the title and not "viola"
@AridSea hem i agree it can happen but if once or twice a year, maybe you should give the instrument a good check up... it should not happen that often... i make them, trust me... ;)
What happened is simply that the gut thingy broke. Happened to me once and nearly blinded me in one eye. I have a feeling he was not really too pleased about it. I wouldn't be if I was in the middle of a concert. I imagine another "lesser" viola player lent him his or her instrument. Then there would be a frantic repair going on behind the scenes by the orchestra technician to replace the gut and restring the instrument for next movement. Dock

there's actually no damage to the instrument.
the only thing that came apart was the tailpiece and that's worth about $10.
everything else is originally just wedged in place and can be easily put back with a new tailpiece.
