  • Quantitative data? Is that the same quantizes used for sampling in a digital format? (Sound/Images) Got to watch out for the descriptive words. What is the sample size?

I really just ignore the fact it doesn't matter what people state in surveys as it will change over time (opinion/culture) or doesn't matter what they believe (science/history).

  • After watching this video I now completely agree with everything you've ever said about free will and non-deterministic neurons!

    *runs and hides*

  • You can run but you cannot hide!!! grrr....

  • Good vid, Randy. I think Juhunn fills in the gaps in the survey that you quote from. As he says, in the middle east and asia there is a greater incidence of people going into engineering, so your use of the word "corrollation" in the relationship between engineers and jihadists is very proper. Jihadists might in fact actively seek out skilled engineers to radicalise, just as they might radicalise younger people and persuade them to take up engineering training for jihad.

  • Randy, your new channel profile picture makes you look like a 40 something Eminem.

I must ask you, to get a clearer view of your points: do you own any domestic pets? Fish and amphibians (unfairly) don't count.

  • haha three of wands, long story on the profile pic; I was making a parody vid of one of veritas48's vids, but it hurt his feelings so I took it down. The profile pick hasn't changed yet though...go figure. Anyrate, w.r.t. the pets, yes, I own a cat.

  • randy - i applaud you on the cat, they have a way of being the best (quiet!) thoughtfull companions.

However, owning a single cat will not open you up to the kind of a posteriori, personal objections to some of your views that i had in mind, and so i offer you my undying intellectual love, and close our discussion on this topic.

  • Hey threeofwands, now you've really got me curious!!!! Where were you going with this, anyways? :-) And BTW, eminem is only a few years younger than I am---we're both middle aged white men from the midwest---I practically went to high school with him! :-)

  • Okey Randy. Under the influence of Old Crow and reggae music, i will try to explain my position. First off - Reason (when it is working properly) is precisely what we have in common with animal instinct. The cat that swipes the bird from a tree limb is (in a parallel sense) the mathematician who has calculated the correct orbit of a Mars Voyager. This is a continuum.

What is peculiar to humanity is the representational quality of consicousness, which can be quite distinct from reason. (cont.)

  • You need look no further than modern art to see how the representational quality (or the duplicating quality to echo Marx)can be utterly devoid of reason. Is this freedom? No, because perversity has it's own trajectory. The proper end to which a being such as ourselves is appropriate will have to wait until I get a shower and can somehow sum it up properly and intuitively, that is to say with a view to our happiness and to what our effort, our human (labor) should amount to.

  • Back on the Old Crow so must conclude: rationality is true animal instinct developed to the level of human complexity. The representational (duplicating) function is unique to man - but only because we have the ability to carry this function out (i.e. your example of cave painting - we are physcially able to paint caves). And so we perform our tasks, aided by rationality, and if we are lucky we have the one moment of freedom available to us - to step back and admire our work as a job well done.

  • My guess is that as a jihadist you have anything regarding the humanities already settled, so this is a no-go. And science where you do research and question things and end up learning stuff contrary to your beliefs isn't too helpful in that regard either. So you learn some cool tricks, end up becoming a trained monkey and can call yourself an engineer. It also helps when you want to fly airplanes and build bombs and stuff.

  • Hi variablast, yes, its obviously testosterone :-) Mayhem is how we prove our manhood....

  • MADNESS?! THIS IS ENGINEERING!!

  • That's what they taught me in ENGR 300 :-)

  • bearded men are also over represented in jihadist groups. strike two buddy - i'm watching you...

seriously though, i'd be interested to hear any of your own theories as to why some technically minded people might be more prone to, em, poor metaphysics.

  • ha niceonetom!! you're right. I'm also left handed and am grouchy before my first coffee...

  • Global warming is caused by the death of pirates. If you look at history, you'll see that temperatures were rising as pirates were dying out. Therefore filesharing is a way to save the planet.

    QED :)

I'd also like to note that there are studies that show that there are more children born in areas where there are more storks.

Oh, and before I forget it:

    Hail the evil engineering pentagram!!!

  • :-) you have a bright future in statistics!!!

  • One of my favorate statistical bend is the classic: "People with smaller feet, on average, have lower IQs." The majority of people I've run into don't understand how this can be a true statement and an unethical statistical lie at the same time. :)

  • Haha RosieDesire, I'll have to remember that one!

  • Yeah... they usually fail to disclose the fact that babies and children were including in the sampling and they tend to have lower IQs and smaller feet than the adults because they haven't finished developing. ;)

  • So koenichfuerst, when are you going to graduate and join our dark society of mayhemmongers!!!

  • I'm already part of the evil workforce. :)

  • Schwing!!!! Congrats man, there's to many of these dang christians around do good all over the place; we could use more help!!!!

  • Don't worry. That course Electrical Enjihadeering 101 really prepared me.

  • Ramen!!!

  • Agreed

  • lol

    ;)

  • Sablechicken!! thanks for stopping by!

  • now i know why i never finished my electrical engineering degree. not enough involvement in islamist terror. i thought it was just b/c i was lazy.

  • Ha x71!!! Most engineers manage to pass ENG 103 (introductory cruelty) but its ENG 342 (advanced mayhem and sadism) which is where most decide to become English majors.....

  • lol. at my school ENG was for english. I took EE or ECE classes no wonder i never finished. :)

  • I am shivering in fear. Please don't hurt me Randy *peep*

    :(

  • If I don't get you, then some other engineer will!!! mwahahaha!

  • No. Living with them as family, I've learned to create a wreath of EMP's as protection....but I suspect you can penetrate that...

  • Randy I always sensed that your friendly appearance was just a veneer to conceal your sinister nature...

  • ha spawnfan101, let this be a lesson to you. With assholes, you always know where you stand, its the nice guys you've got to worry about :-)

  • lol randy nice berserker face at the end!

  • ha oldiousnel, they taught us several "war" faces back in engineering school....

  • ooh my... i didn't know you were an engineer... next time i'll tread lightly :p

    great vid randy

  • Yes Idiothek, my whole body is a weapon :-) BTW, make some more vids man!! Tell us how your Kripke class is going!

  • It makes sense, I guess. After all: "Guns don't kill people, PHYSICS KILLS PEOPLE!" ~ Dick Solomon (John Lithgow).

    :-)

  • LOL dashes, I'll have to remember that one!

  • My favorite joke in that vein... :P

"It's been said that guns don't kill people, and it's somewhat true. But really, I think the gun kinda HELPS. I don't think it'd be much effective to go around yelling "BANG!" into people's ears..." -Eddie Izzard

  • Yeah, "It's not the fall that kills you... it's the sudden stop." - citation left out due to ignorance of the origin :)

  • Engineers and scientists are good at blowing stuff up and causing mayhem? Who knew? The term is evil "genius" not evil "dumbass" after all. And, let's not forget, even Dr. Evil presumably had either an MD or a PhD, I mean, he was a Dr, right?

  • I'm not a Dr., I'm just a registered nurse, so at least I'm not as evil as Dr. evil...

  • lol nice randy, its a pleasure to watch your videos.

  • Thanks darklink; the study didn't say much about pharmicists, so perhaps you're one of the good guys (tm)....

  • Great Video! "you can't argue with data". How wonderfully true and absolutely false at the same time. Rock on Randy.

  • Thanks rUTokKin2ME :-) I feel more dangerous already....

  • Damn. I clicked on this video and excepted porn. How cheap.

  • haha dude beleve me you don't want to see my mewbs :-)

  • Take it off... take it all off!

  • Excellent post.
