Gerrard was still developing as a young player then and would have been much better now. But Pires is absolutely amazing as a winger and I wouldnt put anyone to beat him. Just stating that this is not really a fair observation as Pires was in his prime and Gerrard most certainly was not.

Wrong to make comparisons between Gerrard (a central midfielder) and Robert Pires (winger). Any way, there's little doubt that Gerrard is a more complete player (in my opinion he's the most complete player that has been in the Premiership), but the things Pires was good at (in his prime), he was one of the best in the world at.
As Chris2O09 said, a better comparison would be McManaman vs. Pires, if you have to pick a Liverpool player..

He could pass theball throgh an eye of a needle, dribble with balance and direction at pace and his goal scoring abiliy was sensational. There is no comparison between mcmanaman and pires bcause Mcmanaman was shit compared to pires.

Im English and would say gerrard is englands best play at the moment but Pires was class and pires won the world cup and euros.

@TbspRangerz To all comparing pires to gerrard. Pires in the EPL was the best midfielder in europe. No one was scoring as frequently as Pires from midfield back then. And Pires didn't take 10 penalties a yaer like lampard and gerrard do a year. 3 years in a row of scorrig 14 goal in just the EPL says it all. Attributes wise he used both feet, he was faster taller more skillfull and had an equal eye for a killer through ball as gerrad and lampard.

He has one good games and then five bad games but Liverpool supporters are blind to this fact and are in such need of a hero at their club in the last decade that they're reduced to falsely proclaiming Gerrard to be an all time great.

Pires was a left-winger / supporting striker, he had sublime skill, good vision, balance and a great eye for goal. However, no defensive ability whatsoever, Pires can't tackle or track runs, its not his game.
Gerrard is a central midfielder with probably one of the best engines in world football, superb shot, great defender, great vision and just about everything else.
