Mace, like tazers, are used to passify threatening individuals by non lethal means. These protesters, while engaging in civil disobedience, were not threatening the police officers. Spraying them almost point blank with pepper spray seems unnecessary.

The cops cleared the tents, arrested those who resisted, and were going to leave...that is until the protestors decided it would be a good idea to march on and encircle them, lock arms, and shout "set them free" and "if you let them go, we will let you leave." The cops gave the students countless warnings and were damn more patient than they needed to be. They were no longer protesting at that point, they just weren't going to let the cops go.

What the cops did was entirely within their power and was not police brutality by any means. They were not pepper sprayed for "peacefully protesting;" they were pepper sprayed for active resistance and just being dumbasses. After this, protestors shouted said "we will allow you a brief moment of peace so that you may leave."

And surrounding cops while shouting "set them free" and "if you let them go, we will let you leave." definitely doesn't constitute some use of force, right? They don't have to harm officers. The officers needed to move them out of the way in order to LEAVE...how were they going to do that without force? Not by releasing the arrested.

Mace, like tazers, are used to passify threatening individuals by non lethal means. These protesters, while engaging in civil disobedience, were not threatening the police officers. Spraying them almost point blank with pepper spray seems unnecessary.
One of the officers in an interview claimed they felt threatened and surrounded. Well, a misuse of power is an excellent way to incite a riot.
