Nice poem. But I do not agree that becoming a soldier for capitalism is a good choice in life. This poems words expresses otherwise, omitting in other words that do not describe the entire residual effect and impact on lives overseas.

How exactly did your country need you to fight for it?

As far as I know the American government is the sole reason for this conflict, so in my eyes you are nothing but a drone that mindlessly stepped into the shoes left by your father etc.

If people would actually think why they join up then the problem would be solved, the US doesn't need to fight anyone, they want to fight everyone because they want what others have, simple as that.

I'm guessing since It's called American Soldier, that you were in the Army, and not the Air Force, Marines, or Navy. But I salute you. Great Poem!

@MGuitplyrR You've got it man, Army. (Army reserves, actually) 6 years (Massachusetts). 16 month deployment, 4 in Wisconsin, 12 in Iraq. Mosul, and Al Asad. And true man, the poem is from the heart. Things aren't perfect in the military, and in order for us to change things, and give people the military that they need and deserve, we need to admit the mistakes, and right the wrongs. Forget all these cover ups, etc, as men, all we need to do is admit the truth and "soldier on."
