You might be interested in Hugh Nibley's Temple and Cosmos. There's an excellent article about light (specifically the light and glory of God) having a purifying effect (speculation). Standing even near this glory would burn away all imperfections. When we meet God after this life and his light burns our impurities, if we are mostly evil, we would be destroyed, if we are mostly good we would be perfected. Not established doctrine, but an interesting thought.
Man is righteous by keeping his sacred covenants. Christ was always sinless, he was baptized so he could keep covenants (he had to make them first) and therefore be righteous as well.
The gospel: we need to repent and be baptized (make a covenant) to accept the atonement of Jesus Christ. If we aren't doing good, we clearly haven't truly accepted Christ as our personal Savior. While we are doing the best we can to be like Him, his grace is sufficient for us. Otherwise, we reject His grace.
Certainly Christ is our High Priest, but it couldn't be his baptism alone that did that. If so, than all those baptized that day would be our high priests, and that's not the case.
Thank you for the reference. 1 Cor 15 is one of my favorite chapters in the NT. My favorite is verse 49: "And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly."
I pray that I can bear the earthly image as Christlike as possible, that I my have a Christlike heavenly image.
If Jesus was not baptised - he would not have become a High priest after the order of Melch... all people here on earth that are baptised are baptised as a good covenant to God
Yes, I agree that Jesus had to have been baptized, but maybe my question wasn't clear. If his baptism alone made him our high priest, how is it that everyone baptized that same day by the same authority (John) is not our high priest also. There must have been something else to set Jesus apart as a high priest, right?
Okay, that's cool. I believe Jesus Christ later ordained other high priests by the laying on of hands. But a high priest only holds that authority so long as he is living worthy of it, and he can only use it in a way that Christ would have used it. Christ doesn't technically NEED them, but it gives them an opportunity to learn to be like Him through service.
The thing that makes up me is both spirit and body. When my body dies my body will be buried but I (the spirit) will go to the spirit world. When I am resurrected I (the spirit) will be joined with my body again.
I have a spirit, you have a spirit, I have a body, you have a body. The spirit and body are joined during this mortal life. After we die our spirit leaves and the body remains. When we are resurrected the body and spirit are rejoined to never be separated again. The Father is the father of our spirits. His "only begotten son, Jesus" is the only son of all of the spirit children to be fathered by him in the flesh. The Holy Ghost is a Spirit and has no physical body. The HG bares witness of God.
that is so true. God is spirit (talking about God the Father).. it does not say God has a spirit.. it says God IS spirit... No man can see the Father and live. No man has seen God or can see... God bless
I believe he is speaking of things that are spiritually discerned. We feel him spiritually, we know him spiritually, we understand him spiritually, BUT he does have a physical body as well.
But thats not what the Bible teaches... you are entitled to believe so..
I believe (not taken from the Bible) that people that believe that God has a body of flesh and bones, is caused by their wanting to become gods, completely ignoring what the word of God says about the issue.. God is spirit. No man has seen God. No man can see God and live. No man can see the invisible God etc
If Jesus died and rose three days later without his body...where'd his body go? What's the point of having such a public execution that everyone could witness only to leave your body behind? The scriptures describe a very physical death followed by a very physical resurrection.
Matt 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
The reason LDS says God has a body is because they believe man can become God. There has to be a connectivity between a fleshly God and a fleshly mankind in the theology. The Bible says man is so sinful he would melt like a wax figure in front of a blast furnace if appearing before God. God is Holy, man is His creation. Mormonism blurs the lines similar to the Serpent (Satan) in the Garden of Eden, who is the enemy of God. This is a serious indictment of LDS (Mormonism).
yes and luke is talking about jesus saying you see me as a spirit but i have flesh and bones we see god as a spirit in a philisophical sense but we belive he also has a body

err if i recal it does not say god does not have a body what it says is that he is a spirit which he is, but its reference his spiritual side i am a spirit that doesnt mean i dont have a body. my spirit is contained within my body and when we talk abouts god spirit we are usually talking about his love for us and how we feel of it.

Jesus was baptised because He became our High Priest (the only in existence)...
The Gospel:
Read 1. Cor 15! You have a different gospel - then go and read Galatians...
God bless you

Priest after the order of Melch... There is only one priest after the order of Melch.. Jesus is our only High Priest...
Johns baptism for other was baptism for repentance..

But why did the same act mean different things to different people? Surely something else made Christ our high priest?
